You haven't tried drawing anything ever have you? I can asure you you'd have a hard time drawing even replicating or drawing the shapes he does on Takemitsu Zamurai, even more using the same technique.
Anatomy aside, I've always admired his works. Shame on all the bad scans though.

I could go into a whole diatribe about art history and amateur art "critics", but it's very late here. So let's just give you a quick abbreviation on why it's considered good that might satisfy you: it's 25% innovation and 75% marketing.
The entire thing is chicken scratch but the atmosphere is so dark you hardly notice it.
i'm not sure if blame was ever considered good on a technical level. but what he draws is incredibly intriguing and his ideas are really cool. giant megastructures and weird robots were interesting to look at.
Wasn't Nihei some sort of architecture student or something? I'd say at the technical level it should be considered good, but art is more about the aesthetics, if that's what you meant to say.
