What did you all like about Clannad?
I just finished the series. I liked the music, but the story was just so predictable that it kinda ruined the experience for me. I have many more gripes, trust me. I can go on and on. I'd just like to see from someone else's point of view.

And it's like this with EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER except for Tomoya and Nagisa. Every single character. It left me feeling like I wasted 20 hours of my time learning about characters who make cameo appearances that feel like fan service.

OST,animation(for the time),production values and direction are pretty good in all honestly,the character development and characterization are kind decent too and AS had a somewhat original concept at the time.
Some people complain that the sadness and drama of the anime was very forced at times and i can easily relate to that,the pacing is also bad in my opinion,some arcs can be extremely tedious to watch for some people,especially the first 8 episodes of AS,one last critique is that i think the ending is irredeemable shit.
With all that said,i still feel like Clannad AS is a extremely high quality anime and there's some moments and scenes that are universally loved even among Clannad haters(episode 18 for example).

I actually feel the direction was very poorly done. "Subtle" juxtapositions and facial expressions shown in the series completely revealed major plot points and destroyed plot twists. Take the Fukko-chan episodes. You can tell almost immediately that she was the ghost girl but then the show makes it look like it was a huge secret when it was revealed that she was said ghost girl. You can tell Kotomi and Tomoya were childhood friends by that simple flashback, then the show trys to make it look like it was a huge secret once that was revealed. You could tell Nagisa was going to die eventually as they highly emphasized that she's weak and gets sick easily. It didn't even surprise me when she did, nor did I feel all that sad because I saw it coming from a mile away. I already knew Yukine's brother was dead because of the tone the series carries, always making you suspect the worst, not to mention that discussion about the light orbs.

I can go on and on. If the director's point was to spoil major plot twists then he did a fantastic job. Just don't try to make it look like it was a huge discovery for the viewer when everything is hiding in plain sight.

I can relate to your feelings and critiques because the problem with the pacing in the anime is exactly the fact that they waste tons of episodes with characters arcs just to completely ignore them after that.

They had 2 options to make things better imo:
1.Don't ignore the characters after their arcs,try giving more exposure and importance to them along with Nagisa and tomoya(no need to be the same importance but at least some importance)

2.Don't extend their arcs for so many unnecessary episodes,try to focus more in the relationship between Nagisa and tomoya relationship since that's the selling point of the show.

Listen, I went into this series with high expectations and I tried to give it a lot of credit. I did what I think most people do. I tried to figure out the story while it was happening. Like, "Oh, I wonder who that ghost girl is. Oh it's her! Haha, I got it right! Oooo... Another plot point. What's going on here!? Oh look! I'm right again!"

After this happening over and over and over and over AND OVER AND OVER again it made me realize how the director presented the story so horribly. I'm not saying the story is bad or the characters are bad, I'm saying the director ruined them. In a SoL, you CANNOT risk your story and plot with very obvious direction cues.

The things you mentioned were never meant to be plot twists anon,the director did those things exactly to create build-up and cause a bigger emotional reaction in the watcher when the moment/scene actually hit them.Not all shows have their plot and direction build around plot-twists and surprises.
I don't know if you're familiar with Breaking Bad but that show is a great example of what i'm talking about.
You can anticipate almost every scene in BB because of the immense build-up the series does before each major event,due to this fact you won't be completely surprised when the scene happens(as it's the case with Game of Thrones for example)but the scene will have much more impact instead,because of the anticipation it had beforehand.

This will of course vary from person to person(if you like or not) but i'm just explaining to you to intention of the director.

Besides,when mentioning direction i'm referring to the fact the director knew how to combine Music,Animation,dialogues,momentum and use of colors to make a scene seem much better than it actually is,half of the scenes in Clannad don't have a impressive dialogue or script but the direction makes the viewers think otherwise.(most of the time at least)

I agree. 100% agree.

I actually liked how Nagisa stuck to her roots. She didn't completely change as a whole person after dating and marrying Tomoya. She went back to high school and became shy again. She couldn't get people to join the drama club because she's weak and needs Tomoya physically with her to encourage her to meet her dreams. Tomoya was still his strong self, out to help others even if Nagisa wasn't there. They did a great job showing off the interaction of these two characters. It made me feel like their realtionship was real. They were two sides of the same coin and needed eachother.

If only they didn't throw every other character in the series under the bus and leave them to be forgotten, then maybe I would have liked this series much more.

That's where I disagree.

The show would take these huge 10 minute expositions to explain what just happened and show the audience the plot twist and to explain it in great detail. It'd show the reactions of the surprised MC learning about the past of a certain character. It'd take the time to show girls crying and being consoled, as if they're shocked by this discovery an audience member figured out 3 episodes ago.

I love Breaking Bad. I love the direction because the direction made you anticipate what was going to happen. You're 100% correct. However, with that form of direction, things are only implied, not shoved in your face due to a juxtaposition. You never can say you know for a fact that this or that will happen. With Clannad, I knew for a FACT that certain things were going to happen, like Ushio dying on the way to the train. The second she said "I want to go on a trip" I KNEW for a fact she was going to die on the way there. Guess what, I was right.

I can relate to your complaints about the plot being predictable but i can guarantee to you that the director knew full well what the audience would guess in the show,the Ushio thing you mentioned is something that almost everyone guessed before happening but they felt sad and impressed either way,mainly because the show is constantly teasing your emotions(trying to constantly change the mood of the anime from Happy to sad and vice versa at all times) and Ushio scene at the end is no exception(I personally don't like that scene but it's just a example),they also did that with the ending.

As to your last statement,a good adaptation gets recognized as such in the majority of times and plenty of movies and series end up receiving storms of complaints for changing to much the source material.
Clannad is a well adapted anime and the design decision you're complaining is purely based on how the VN was structured,it's also purely based on personal perspective if you liked or not.

The format is anime. That's the anime I saw. It wasn't a VN and I won't look at it in that way. At this point you're just blindly liking it because it "stays true to it's origin."
This doesn't change the fact that character development is destroyed.
This doesn't change the fact that the director spoils major plot points.

This doesn't change the fact that the story is predictable.
This doesn't change the fact that the ending was terrible well maybe not fact, but it's a general consensus that the series ended with a poorly done, happily ever after, generic ending.
