What manga artist has the absolute best paneling?

I started thinking about it yesterday and I realized that's like an art form in itself, good paneling really affects the quality of the manga.

I have no fucking clue who might be better than who but it definitely adds a lot ot a manga, pic related or take any JoJo page and you'll see Araki takes almost every panel and cuts some of its corner, why? no clue but if they were all square instead I'm sure it would look different and feel different.

Haven't seen that shit in forever.
Loved that manga. Matsumoto is a god, I swear. His paneling is always top tier. Very rarely matched.

On a related note, I think Asano Inio is overrated at times, but his paneling is really quite superb. Sometimes a little dense and subtle, and you miss a lot of the nuances if you read it fast, but he manages to jam a lot in there very efficiently and powerfully, while still creating a strong sense of flow.

Flow
Impact
Aesthetics.

Flow is how your eyes are directed down the page. Most important part, panels have to naturally drive the sequence of events in the right order. Poor placement makes you look at a future panel too soon or a past panel too late.

Impact, as in the way boundaries are modulated in order to emphasize and exaggerate. It's easy enough to create flow - look at any 50s comic book. Filmstrip style, all boxes, uninteresting but very direct and lucid. You have to rearrange them to make the important bits stand out.

Aesthetics, as in, independent of context, how interesting the panels look by themselves. Pic related is a great example

>>122931081
With a panel sequence like that you're supposed to look at them all at once. Like a panorama. It's not designed to give you a clear sense of direction, aside from top-down and left-right

the Yuasa and Matsumoto fanbases overlap pretty significantly. it's just this general holier-than-thou attitude of "artsy" fans that makes people who thought a series was just average or okay act as if it's the worst thing ever and spam that opinion to pester fans. I can relate to it; I haven't done it in like, 7 years though (and not for Yuasa or Matsumoto stuff).

you're assuming that people can't post HxH and also more obscure stuff. having a kneejerk reaction like that to something popular being posted is exactly why there is a grain of truth to all the "hipster" claims directed at certain fanbases.

besides, not everyone starts off with the popular big fighting shonens and then 'graduates' from them, and most of the people reading them (kids and teenagers) don't take note of things like paneling. it's interesting when someone points out that stuff.

This irreversibly changes the way your eyes move around the page, you fucking tards.
>>
>>122931732
Because these two pages are symmetrical, along with the rest of the issue as part of a purposeful design.

The left and right sequence of panels both form three stages of an action, and in the context of the book, where Ozymandias is the closest thing to a superhuman, it forms a slow-motion sequence, as if we're actually looking at it in his perspective.
>why no change in perspective
The panels on the left slowly turn right in relation to the character, then the middle one completes the arc, while the ones on the right zoom in, then change the angle to the left. It's formed a 180-degree arc.

a big issue with mainstream American comics, probably the biggest visually, is when genuinely good art is handed to cheap colorists to Photoshop some bullshit colors and shading over it because "shitty coloring is better than no coloring, I guess"

this is actually the best-colored scene in this entire comic because it actually uses different colors for the lights and shades. the rest is much, much worse and the colorist just airbrushed white and black as lighting/shading
