That said, the Hamao looks nice, but none of the others interest me. Not sure if I'll buy it or not. I've bought a few books from Fakku because I do like the idea of Fakku books but there are little things that are turning me off, like Jacob's Valentine's day stint, and the fact that they only release one chapter a day for digital titles now when they released the whole thing at once before. It just feels like they're jerking around their customers. Then there's the fact that Jacob has said "We're going to ship the books now, guys!" only for it to happen a few weeks or a couple of months later. I also have a feeling that books with controversial matter will be digital only.

Bit disappointing really, I really liked the idea of Fakku Books when it started. I think it could actually be pretty good if Jacob weren't at the helm.

This has been my main issue with the Fakku Books since the beggining.
I'm glad finally hentai artists are legally receiving the recognition they deserve outside Japan. On Valentine's Day we ran a poll asking which individual book users would like to see go on sale and included an option for "all of them". Obviously that was going to be the winning answer regardless of the specifics of the question. The plan was always to choose a vanilla title to go on sale for Valentine’s Day. When users saw only one book on sale they complained that all of them weren't considering it was the winning option in the poll. The moment I saw that I responded, and within a few minutes of the sale starting I put the rest of our books up with the same discount (with the exception of Hanafuda which we had just announced that week). It was my fault that we had an “all of them option” and I was stupid to think that users would hesitate to buy more than one book. I learned from that, and at the end of the day we had broke our previous sales record and sold over 2,000 books in 24 hours. The users were right.

I've been transparent on the forums that I have been experimenting with different distribution methods for each book to see what works best. This is a brand new market, there are no other companies releasing manga at this quality without any form of DRM (at least in the United States). It's important to learn what method of distribution results in the most sales because it really is important to sell books. Every sale results in the artist getting more money, they see the numbers themselves and it affects the content they produce in Japan. If we release some random fetish that people love the artists will see that and produce more of it.

For our first book we had a two month pre-order window and then released all the chapters at once. For our second book we had a 1 week pre-order window, made one chapter available immediately, and then released all the chapters at once. For our third, fourth, and fifth books we did a 0 day pre-order (basically no pre-order) and released chapters daily spread out over a month. Our sixth book is Hanafuda which is sort of its own thing. Our seventh book we had a one week pre-order window, with daily chapter releases leading up to the complete version being made available at the end.

I go into detail to show that it’s not some haphazard decision to release things this way; I'm still experimenting to find out what works best. For us success is defined by the amount of people that buy the book and how engaged they are reading it. Right now the chapter by chapter method is working exceptionally well and the majority of users like it. It allows us to release the book earlier, tag chapter individually, it allows discussion to form around each chapter, etc etc.

As I've said many times we will be printing paperback editions of all books no matter how controversial. NTR2 is the best example of this, it will be probably the first straight loli book with a paperback edition. For Hanafuda, Okama specifically requested we only start with the digital version and see how it does. He is aware of how controversial the loli/shota rape chapter is and is honestly being smart about it and taking his time.

You should check out the Inoue Kiyoshirou book. It’s definitely not vanilla, but I think it’s one of the best books to come out over the past few years. I have probably collectively fapped to those chapters over 100 times. Also that yandere. Damn.

My sincere hope is that other publishers change their policies after seeing our success. I want to see DRM free digital downloads for manga. I want to see uncensored source material without redrawing. I want to see publishers stand up for the content they are publishing. I want to see unaltered content, I don’t want publishers to be afraid to translate something correctly “stick your dick in my 14 year old pussy” and be proud to stick it in there. I want to see time and effort put into making sure the quality of the book is good, because it needs to be good to warrant spending money on. And I believe the quality of our releases achieve that.

Another problem is the insane costs of h anime. The upcoming Takeda Hiromitsu/Murakami anime is 30 minutes long and costs some 50$ in Japan. You'll never sell it to Western people at the price.

Either way, I think there's a matter of scale here. We have like fucking 20-30 monthly publications, odds and ends digital anthologies, and then literally thousands of new doujinshi every year. We'd probably need about another two to three companies the size of Fakku to be able to get everything covered, each with their own steady growth.

There's about 8-12 new eroanime every month on average, that's much more manageable, but we haven't seen an American release of any title newer than about 2008. It sounds like it should be easier but it's dead for vague reasons mostly attributed to reverse importation fears which shouldn't even be a factor after about a year.

If you give space between release dates, there's no reason your R1 product should cost the same, that would only occur to make sure the Japanese customers buy the Japanese release. Not to mention that reverse importation is much more difficult with DVD than with BD.
