i'm reading this now. the first parts are pretty cliche but the art is getting great and it gets a hell of a lot better story-wise as it goes.

the beginning has too much "he's the best just because. oh my god isn't he an amazing climber!", but it definitely starts shying away from that and starts actually showing his shitty life and actual trials he has to endure. it's starts getting a lot darker and presents things a little more maturely. but i'm only around chapter 90 so we'll see.
>>
>>122717977
Yeah that's pretty much what I was expecting from this manga before starting it so I'm not worried about the beginning being shitty, also, can't wait for the art. Is it the same artist tho, if so then that dude fucking improved like hell from the pages I've seen on OPTs.

I honestly don't care. /a/ does this with all sorts of manga series. They take something positively mediocre and create a hypetrain. Pretty soon, droves of newfags are claiming it's the best manga evar!!!1 and it gets an overblown reputation. It's group mentality at its finest. That enjoyment you enjoyed. It was fake. You enjoyed the atmosphere around you reading Punpun. Not the story itself. You gave in to hype. It's a fucking shit manga.
>>

Agreed.
Though I wish it ended with how the author wanted with the guy dying at the end like the guy died in real life.
But whatever it's still good.

>>122717553
It's generic on purpose.
Really.

It starts off so fucking cliche and then BAM, it punches you right in the fucking guts and reminds you that real life isn't a fucking shonen and shit just happens.
The first time I read it, it just completely blew me away. I like to believe it was intentional just to fuck with the reader.

Ai-ren.jpg
76KB, 728x1061px
While I'm recommending things for this thread, I would name Ai-ren for being a near damn masterpiece.

It's fucking amazing when you can make true sadness in every single chapter.
When you can make simple children playing in the yard so fucking sad.

There was some side characters that really didn't need some focus but all those chapters focusing on the children just hurts on such a horrible level.
>>
>>122725126

Why would you do that? Why would you spoil the ending of a manga that you claim to have really enjoyed in a thread where you are replying to people who are in the process of reading it?

I know it's not like it's a brand new ongoing manga, but more than one anon just now said they were x number of chapters in. Why the fuck would you go and reveal a major piece of the ending? Do you not want them to experience it the way you did? At least as far as that part goes, the suspense will be ruined. No "punch in the gut" for them.

Good job.

This is why we have spoiler tags. For exactly this type of thing.

I'm not even annoyed for myself, I've read it.

Also, Bitter Virgin is damn near masterpiece for what it is.
It's very short, only 4 volumes, and just fucks you over.
Try not to read the tag and judge the story by its cover; it has shoujo art, so it'll all be nice, cuddly and warm.

This was such an insane ride.
It kinda got really fucking stupid with a dickgirl uberstrong subplot that was introduced out of fucking nowhere and then vanished.

But goddamn is it near perfect when it wants to be.

It's just alright with good art at the moment.

Once Garou's arc gets fully drawn, I'll call it a masterpiece.

>>122716575

20CB is possibly his worst.

Nearly everything except Friend dying out of fucking nowhere was shit.
A nice idea of children dreams somehow ruining the world and how a religion went from being a whisper to the sole superpower religion in the world. But it barely shows how it happened which makes it all the more bullshit.

It really feels as though Urasawa took Johan and went all ''hey, rather than not give the main antagonist a name like Johan, let's make his identity and face unknown''.
It was just horribly fucking done the entire time.

Best fucking work by Urasawa my goddamn ass.

Why would you give credit to Johan for being the super manipulator but not Friend ? Everone fawns over Monster all the time but I found it to be pretty boring, it revolved about a small circle of characters that I didn't found believable enough to care about with the exception of maybe Sara.

20th CB had some major motivations and I liked how Friend does not only manipulate a couple guys but makes the whole world into his instrument, turning the supposed heroes into terrorists. I also really enjoyed that all of these guys were just normal adults with all their flaws and the constant anxiety of being persecuted by the whole world - but still trying to right their wrongs. That and the whole scale the manga brought was just so much bigger than Monster that I enjoyed it endlessly more, you can have your taste, I have my own.

>>122727743
Shitposting isn't a commendable trait anon.

>>122727739
>You win, everyone talks about you. You lose, you're nobody.
That's not what I mean.
Like, for example, in the fight themselves, that faggot with his mouth fucked open fought Irako the first time.
He gets shown to be such a goddamn beast, killing so many people and shit.
But then, as he fights Irako, all his aura of badass vanishes. For no fucking reason.

At certain points, some characters are shown to be badass on such an impossible inhuman level and are then brought down to seem as though they're human in the middle of a fight.
And it doesn't happen once but many times over the course of the manga.

Like, for example, Gennosuke gets build up to be such a badass by the end of the manga despite his injury but when he fights Irako in the end, he doesn't have a badass aura.
Just why?

And Irako gets to have an insane ''I am Death motherfucker'' aura even though chapters prior, it was shown that Irako was just being a lazy faggot who struggled in his matches.

It's really inconsistent.

Because Johan actually manipulates people if you look close at the details of the manga.
Burned records, getting loved ones to help him, blackmail, getting serial killers to do his bidding, doing shit himself, etc.

Friend is shit because his motivation is stupid
>huuurrr you weren't a good friend so I'm going to fuck over the world

We never fucking know how Friend gets to be influential. Hell, not even the characters know.
His second in command even laments that he has no fucking clue how they got that powerful near the end.

It's all a big fucking joke.
How the fuck did Friend fuck the entire world?
How did he manipulate everyone?
We're never shown because it doesn't matter.

Just like how Friend bending the spoon shit was pointless.
Or how pointless that guy who could tell the future.

Or how about how Friend's daughter gets this large attention to herself about getting the mafia together to fight off Friend and whatever and NOTHING happens from it.

No assasinnation (red herring, huuurrr) and then Friend fucks the world.
None of it matters.

None of the characters do anything.
The MC just comes back out fucking nowhere by the end with a bullshit case of amnesia.
What the fuck?

Everything is all just a whole ''ooh shit, I remember something from my childhood which is important to the plot!''. shit over and over.

Johan actually fucks people because his main goal in life is to fuck as many people as he can, doing as little as he possible can, to corner himself and then get out of getting himself killed by doing as little as possible.

Johan is the greatest character written by Urasawa and it shows.
20CB is just shit.

What makes Monster so good is that it feels like a hunt.
You want to find out who the fuck Johan is and you also feel his overreaching hand touching everything.
Even when Johan isn't on screen, you can feel his manipulation by his followers.

And the sad fact is that no one really understood Johan by the end.
The guy just trolls the living fuck out of everyone, fucks so many people just to kill them, and it's all hidden very well across the entire manga.

I can't call Monster a masterpiece because of Urasawa's main flaw which is having damn interesting good characters contributing nothing overall.
Like that psychologist or that psychiatric or Anna.
But it's the discovery of Johan as the story progresses that makes it good.

And the ending is shit but only if you don't understand why Johan kills people.
If you do understand Johan, the ending is the best Urasawa has made.

>>122728109

As far as I remember Friends motivation was that he lived their child scenario, he basically just wanted to "play" - although it doesn't necessarily make him better than
>huuurrr you weren't a good friend

Ii'spretty sad that many events don't really equate into any results but that's the same with Monster for a large portion of the manga, Urasawa just likes to have his heroes fail I guess. The last Arc was a disappointment.

Probably have to reread it to really comment on what you said, it has been a couple of years since I read it. Overall you are not wrong but the positives did outweight the negatives by a large margin, at least in my memory.

To be fair, I liked the bit where history gets completely written in Friend's favor and the heroes just fail.
That was a damn good twist.
I liked the characters but it felt as though the story kept building up to something and just ended up not amounting to much.

It's really interesting how a simple cult went from being a whisper to a full blown superpower but the how it happened is completely ignored.
There's probably some message how things happen and no one knows how it happened but it doesn't seem well done.

>>122728487
It doesn't sound easy since it should have been the first thing you brought up.
I liked Grimmer for many reasons. His personality does remind me a lot of myself in how he acts in various ways, how unemotional he is yet still acts with compassion and dedication.

You're just being a little shit, again, about how I structure my sentences rather than my opinions. Saying childish things, in your opinion, does not make them wrong.

Maybe not quite masterpieces, but here are the ones that fill me with warmth inside.

>Kyou Kara Ore Wa

Undoubtedly the best yankee manga of all time. Golden characters, solid humor, and managed to keep fresh over all those chapters.

>The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer

Some of the strongest characters in a shounen series, emotionally, and was able to wrap itself up in a perfect amount of chapters, with possibly one of the nicest endings I've ever seen.

>Yotsuba&!

I don't need to explain this, faggots.

>Hotel
I SEE TREES OF GREEN. AND RED ROSES TOO.

>Sun-Ken Rock
Mostly because of the art quality. I've never seen more detail in characters. Every chapter is hype because of the detailed fights.

>Mahou Tsukai No Yome
Because a love story between a Japanese girl and a British Demon is just so perfect. It has a vibe that reminds me of old English children's books, like The Secret Garden. I love it.

>Onani Master Kurosawa
No-one was ready for that one.

>Sakamoto Desu Ga
Fucking Sakamoto.

There's probably more but I read so many that I lose track of some of the great ones.

Dickgirl was introduced as a necessary but unfortunate break since the author needed the buildup for the final duel, I believe.

I fucking love how in Shigurui the author doesn't show us the character's thoughts, but rather relies on the expressions and on the narrator's comments.
I also love how the subversion near the end where the "bad guy" , or better antagonist, turns out to be the only character to give us the only positive message of the whole manga, while the "good guy" is a complete slave to rules and social expectancies.

Samidare is great and all, but Spirit Circle has been leagues better in my opinion. Yes, that's how high i'm rating it.

My only gripe withit is that's still ongoing so it still have the chance to fuck up the ending, but Mizukami has shown he knows what he's doing and in particular SC give the feeling how something carefully planned in detail in advance, so i'm not that worried.
>>
>>122731736
Yeah, although Irako was a complete dick, you can see that he was truly the only one who fought the system to make a name for himself. Irako really seemed weird in some parts where he showed empathy like when he threw up while having to cut the faces of his targets but also cold blooded killed a physician for experience.
And in the end of the story, the Kogan girl had to kill herself because she knew that her husband was still fucked by the system and would forever be a husk of a man.

It's a really downer ending but perfectly reinforces the overall themes of the manga.

I really would have minded the dickgirl bits if that frogbro came back.
You saw him at some parts, he gets an arc and you seem him as part of the contestants at the end. Yet we never see his fight or what happened to him.

This thread is an excellent example of why /a/ manga taste fucking sucks. Most people read manga just for ``feels'' or because they have this plebian need for ``deep'', and/or dark, and/or edgy seinen, which is why these threads always get filled with the same stuff -- Asano Inio, Onani Master Kurosawa, Fukumoto, Berserk, Homunculus, Hokou no Kito, Vagabond, Tokyo Ghoul, and many other. Now, besides the works of Asano Inio, Tokyo Ghoul, and Homunculus, the rest are objectively good, but still too popular on /a/. There are literally thousands of manga out there, and yet people circlejerk over a handful of series that have already been discussed to death in the past years. Can you please read more than 20 series before trying to decide on the masterpieces in the medium? Because otherwise we are doomed to drawn in this sea of shit taste and peasantry.

The auro isn't about abilities but derive from one character fearing the other. Gennosuke was a beast, but he was terrified of Irako and the multitude of his achievements. It wasn't just Gennosuke vs. Irako, it was the last ember of Kogan Ryuu against a fucking genius swordsman that had already destroyed all the other masters.

Gonzaemon was terrifying and portrayed as a monster because he, while not being as skilled and Gennosuke or Irako in single combat, is an absolute terror in terms of raw strength. When he decimates the first group of spear-men, the crowd goes crazy and just assumes he's ripping people apart. It was an act -- Gonzaemon was attempting to bury Irako's victory under the horror of his rampage. But he wasn't as good as Irako, and thus he lost (truth be told, I think Gonzaemon was the best of them all but he was never able to perform under ideal conditions, ex. using an actual sword and having it not break like it did in their second fight -- he was likely the best swordsman in the entire manga at that point).
>>
>>122731736
The manga ended early. Those characters would have had a conclusion if the author had more time. Its all part of the story he based the manga on.
>>
>>122735492
Too long. Its all great but it enters a weird category of taking too much time with its greatness.
>>
>>122742398
You're not alone at all i've even bought the localization, no regrets, Orange is one of the best thing i've read in the past years.

About serialization, i heard the manga has ended (or is about to), but i don't think it was axed, rather just meant to be short (iirc it was awarded/aknowledged as one of the best/most popular ongoing manga a while back, so ratings shouldn't be an issue). Not like that's a bad thing.

It took so long to be done due to publishing issues, switching magazines and such, then author lost the drive to draw more (maybe due to that) an took a while to restart the serie.

Scanlations are slow as fuck though.

>TV backlog
TV as western TV series ones or anime TV shows?
Checked, if it's the latter.
>movie backlog
Check, both on anime and west. But i'm not actively working on the latter.
>current airing movie/anime backlog
Check. Kinda - if it's airing and i'm watching it can't be on backlog, right?
>manga backlog
Check.
>book backlog
Kinda. LNs aside (only few of them can fall under "books" category) i haven't read much lately. Been re-reading some stuff in English to improve it though.
>VN backlog
Check. Barely scraped the medium even accounting only translated stuff.
>vidya backlog
Kinda. I do have a immense one (have barely played any worthwhile title) but i lost the drive to play almost anything quite some time ago.
>music backlog
To be honest i've never treated listening to music as i read/watch manga/anime, so can't say. Plenty of stuff i think i have to listen sooner or later though.

How did i do?

>>122746358

Etrian Odyssey is my favorite fucking series and it's pretty anime too.
If you have a 3DS, play 4. If not, emulate 3.
Pretty rarely mentioned on /v/ but when it is, people rarely dislike it.

Sengoku Rance is second, try that too if you never did. Universally liked by /v/.

Haven't found a reason to do it for mangas, but to delve deeper into the work and its subtext. Perhaps, in a reference heavy manga, to observe the foreshadowing/symbolism/someothershit that you'd only see in hindsight.

it has to be great all around. from the beginning, middle and to the end, it should be consistent.
it also needs to be enjoyable beyond it's gimmick.
i'd be able to list tons of "classics" in their respective genres, but i don't think i can name any "masterpieces".

maybe onani master kurosawa since it was short and sweet. (unless you're some faggot that likes to scream NTR all day long)

I legitimately think this can be considered a masterpiece, it has it all, art, characters, story, you can argue it gets too confusing but I'd say you can excuse it since its a mystery.
>>
>>122759299
that's why masterpiece isn't a very useful word. it's just too broad. it's not something people can agree on.
"genre classics" are better. i think most would be able to agree on a "sports classic" or similar. at least it's easier.

Yes, anyone that would waste time or energy panning Punpun has to be a bitter person. The kind of person that would make a snarky greentext reply instead of responding to something directly.
