Remake is the S1 general plot but takes from elements found in S2 and beyond so it's a bit of a clusterfuck.

Don't forget that there's two movies that take place between S2 and S3 with are canonically sequels and fit in between them.

In my memories, this was the show where everyone died, good guys led a desperate struggle mostly doomed to fail, and Harlock is progressively left alone as his friends upload themselves in machines, stay on backwater planets, betray him (for good reasons) or plain die. The smiles did not make an impression on me.

Isn't Yamato sorta out of touch from the whole leijiverse thing compared to other leiji works? It does have it's cross-overs but they're usually not a huge deal. I think that one cat is the only creature that appears in ALL leijiverse works, Mii.

Yeah, mainly because of all the troubles Matsumoto had while working on Yamato.

The Death Shadow does appear in the Yamato manga and Harlock as well, Matsumoto himself said that he wanted to make Harlock's first appearance in Yamato so I guess you can say it's another Harlock that exists outside of the classic Leijiverse.

Most of the Leijiverse still doesn't make much sense, there are countless contradictions throughout the series.

I don't think a character like Harlock would really flourish as well in Yamato, Space Pirate was great because it was somehow able to have two fucking utopia's and some of the most idealistic characters ever yet still ground them against reality. I can only assume that the friction you'd usually get with these elements doesn't overheat and destroy the series because the vacuum of space keeps them discrete enough.

Well, considering his role in Yamato was supposed to be that of the mysterious figure watching over the protagonists it could have been kind of similar to the one that appears in GE999, except this one would have been a full cyborg that protected Susumu and the others out of family ties instead of higher ideals.

Yeah, the sea of stars is the best setting for Harlock, he can wander as much as he likes and be true to his ideals, he's free to go where he wants when he wants, it's the usual romantic man of the sea stereotype that comes from the romantic era but in space instead of water, and I can safely say it works like a charm.

Yeah, it's pretty shocking when you see it in the manga, the Death Shadow appears to help the Yamato getting out of a sector full of asteroids, Susumu goes on board the Death Shadow to speak with the captain but all he sees are people wearing black robes, the captain of the ship appears to be shocked when he sees Susumu but he quickly dismiss him giving him his blessing, once they get out the Death Shadow Analyzer comments on the fact that the only bioemission he caught were those of the Captain, and were far too weak for a normal human being, meaning he must have been a cyborg with a crew of robots.
It's really a strong part of the manga, if you get the chance you should read it Anon.

The only major changes you could point to as a division are when the bubble collapsed 1991, when analog changed to digital around 2000, and maybe Eva popularizing the late night model. I'm not saying old anime isn't worth watching, I'm saying that us "millenials" that haven't seen to old anime don't know about it because no body talks about it. It doesn't get exposure. People go back and watch old movies like Casa Blanca and Citizen Kane because they're heralded as the greatest shit in cinema.They get exposure. Old animes don't. I'm asking people (like the person I responded to originally) to tell us about them. Tell us the good ones. We'll watch them. We're just ignorant. Posting "I wish you guys would leave" rather than "You think that's old!? You should watch ____!" isn't enlightening. It's just crotchety shouting. Share what you love rather than bitch about what you hate.

I'm watching Ashita no Joe 2 (masterpiece), Lupin III Pink Jacket (great animation, pic related but writing feels dull compared to green and red) and Rose of Versailles (excellent so far).

I also bought a collection of four classic films dubbed into Swedish: Macross, Leda, God Bless Dan Cougar and Toward the Earth

André joins her regiment against everyone's wishes and the two eventually make up when André is injured.
