Also, the 7th movie is my favorite one, followed pretty closely by the 5th one.
It was an incredible series that I went into seriously cynical of and I ended up rewatching the entire movies series directly after finishing it.
Don't forget to watch the Epilogue, Future Gospel, and extra chrous.

Paradox Spiral was pretty good, but my favorite is Mirai Fukuin. The time skip part was pretty fun, basically unpowered accelerator and his loli doing investigating.
Future perception in the Nasuverse is pretty cool as well.

If you have that much interest in the story, I'd suggest reading the novels. The whole floating, flying, falling thing sounded like trivial BS when Touko explained it in the movie, but it was easy to understand and interesting in the book.

This is really good advice. A lot of questions I had about it after watching the movies (and a lot of the things that people call pretentious/meaningless about it) make a lot more sense in the source material. The occasionally awkward pacing of the films is also not an issue, which is kind of nice. Lingering Sense of Pain is almost twice as long as A Hollow but only like 8 minutes shorter or something adapted. The films look nice and have really exceptional soundtracks, but the books really do do a better job of handling the thematic material.

>>122630187
To be honest, this isn't quite as ridiculous as it sounds when you think about it a bit.

Lio got the goods from Araya, a man whose primary talent was awakening potential beyond the normal. In magecraft terms, perfect suspension usually isn't possible, just like how humans usually aren't able to consume their own body weight in raw flesh.

>>
>>122632531
Wouldn't it be the reverse of that? A few friends of mine who are usually more the SAO crowd tried watching it and got upset pretty fast by the relative lack of action. It seems to me that if you didn't even try to give it some thought it'd just be really boring given how secondary the action is to the central themes.
>>
>>122632458
I get the love for the 1 to 4th movie since they are all linked.
The 5th one is really good.
The 6th is atrocious.
The 7th is a cluster fuck. I can't even start to start explaining since I can't remember shit in it since it made no sense.
The 8th is quite pleasant, it was a nice surprise.
Can't remember extra chorus, was that the one where Shiki talked for half and hour and that was all? It was actually really pleasant.

At least it was a fun ride with its up's and down's and it was much more entertaining than UBW.
>>
>>122632696
>The 6th is atrocious.
It's a notoriously bad adaptation of one of the best parts of the source material. People have been upset about that for the better part of a decade now.

>Can't remember extra chorus, was that the one where Shiki talked for half and hour and that was all? It was actually really pleasant.
Extra Chorus is the BD special of Mirai Fukuin (#8). Epilogue is the half hour conversation between Void and Kokutou. That one made a whole lot more sense after reading the books.
>>
>>122632785
You have my thanks for the information.

Indeed they have. Understandably enough.

I can't remember the Extra Chorus, I still have it on a HDD somewhere. I shall watch it again.
I really liked the Epilogue, it was interesting, easy to understand and gave a lot meaning to all the past events.

The Extra Chorus is great and has some really adorable moments. It's almost purely fanservice (of the non-lewd sort) but very well done and pleasant for what it is. Pic related.

I'm impressed you got a lot out of Epilogue without background knowledge. I usually think of myself as reasonably astute when it comes to putting stuff together, but I felt like I missed a lot of it until after I'd done some reading and thinking.

>I think I did at least, probably wrong though. The schizophrenia of Shiki is explained pretty well.

Out of pure curiosity, if you had to sum up the central theme of the series in a sentence or two, what would you say?

Pardon my stupidity but how is this poster relevant to the anime? It's a nice piece of art though.

>Out of pure curiosity, if you had to sum up the central theme of the series in a sentence or two, what would you say?
Holy fuck, this is going to be dreadful but sure let's amuse the population.
It's the conflict with ones inner-self and how they manage to deal with it in respect of their friends and work. Shiki being the central character which allows everybody else to stay connected.

This is when being anonymous is great. I can't think of a good answer.
>>

>Pardon my stupidity but how is this poster relevant to the anime? It's a nice piece of art though.
I dunno. I think it was a promotional poster and I really liked it.

>This is when being anonymous is great. I can't think of a good answer.
It's fine. I just like asking that of everyone and seeing the range of answers because of how open to interpretation it is.

My personal reading of it:
It's about coping with grief and bereavement. One perspective (embodied by Araya and those he manipulated) seeks to deny grief through a variety of methods e.g. suicide (Kirie), transcendence of humanity through the Root (Araya) and surrendering one's humanity (Lio). The other (embodied by Touko and eventually Shiki) acknowledges that grief is an inevitable and defining part of human life and sees a way forward in embracing the inevitable imperfections of human interaction and just living.
>>
>>122634893

Welp.
>>
>>122634604
Yes. It's kind of a mixed bag, though. Some episodes are better (5 is excellent), some are worse.
>>
>>122634921
Even though your answer is clearly more constructed than mine didn't Kirie not want to die?
I thought she committed suicide once, failed and when faced to an imminent death pledged for her life. Maybe she was already dead, I do not remember correctly since her "ghost form" was not just an after-life creation.
On the other hand Shiki is not able to understand the imperfections for a long time, at least until Raradox Spiral and really only accepts them during the Epilogue.

I am fishing for an argument here but I am not of any use, sorry.
>>
>>122632654

It requires more thought than SAO, but plotwise it's still all just nasu making up rules because it's his world, as opposed to setting up a simple set of rules the reader can follow that keep everything consistent. The rest of his fiction that came after KnK just really takes that idea and runs with it while KnK itself just put more effort into putting meaning into it all. If all you care about is the story, what's going on, yeah, you can shut off your brain, it's easy to understand. If you care about what nasu's trying to say behind it all, it's still not at all hard to follow and the messages aren't particularly profound, nor are they unique thoughts.
>>
>>122635380
>didn't Kirie not want to die?
You're kind of right, I guess. The way I phrased that was careless.
>I thought she committed suicide once, failed and when faced to an imminent death pledged for her life. Maybe she was already dead, I do not remember correctly since her "ghost form" was not just an after-life creation.
She was an invalid who was basically given an incorporeal form by Araya. She used that to draw others into suicide and eventually killed herself after the ghost form was "killed" by Shiki.
>On the other hand Shiki is not able to understand the imperfections for a long time, at least until Raradox Spiral and really only accepts them during the Epilogue.
Yeah, definitely. That's one of the major progressions of the story.

>>122635391
>but plotwise it's still all just nasu making up rules because it's his world, as opposed to setting up a simple set of rules the reader can follow that keep everything consistent.
I guess that is true. He has a liking for dealing with fairly down-to-earth themes through complex and occasionally really vague cosmological and magical themes. It's really a matter of personal preference, but I like that approach to storytelling, since it feels kind of fresh and different.
>messages aren't particularly profound, nor are they unique thoughts.
That's pretty hard to argue over in any meaningful way, honestly. "Profoundness" is largely in the eye of the beholder. Besides, something doesn't necessarily need to be a world-shattering philosophical treatise to be worthwhile. After all, thematic originality in fiction is pretty difficult to do these days. Personally, I care as much about execution of a thematic dialogue as I do about the themes themselves.

Watching this just makes me think KnK should have solved all its problems through dance-offs.

Kokuto brings the unoffensive basics.

Ayaka sets the dance mat aflame with her hot dance moves
And Touko just brings her own hype-Touko to get the crowd roaring.

5 is really great and all, but the story itself can really feel like a clusterfuck at times, so I didn't enjoy it as much as others.
Though, I love all the movies, even 6. It's hard for me to pick a favorite.
Then epilogue wraps it up pretty nicely with more void Shiki (best Shiki).

Yeah, they are. It's not like I dislike any of the series' entries, I just don't like them as much.
You're definitely right about the Epilogue being important, I can't possibly figure out why an anon had told me I should just skip the Epilogue before I started the series.
I liked Extra Chorus, but in regards to what's cuter I think 6 nailed it, especially during the interactions beteeen Shiki and Azaka (the dining/bed/knife scene, the dog, etc.). You can't really let the messy story of 6 cloud your judgment of all the good parts. That being said, Extra Chorus (as well as the 7th movie) really sealed the deal for my label of KnK being the greatest love story ever told.

I like it somewhat because it was one of the main points where big thematic things happened (along with 5). I definitely think it could have been better executed, though. It seemed really anticlimactic after 5.
>>
>>122637339
Also not really contributing much of anything.
1-4 all built towards 5 by either developing the protagonists, the plot or the villains and then 5 made that big climactic payoff. 6 Didn't contribute to the important characters, and instead its protagonist was a throwaway side-character that never did anything important again. It didn't contribute to the overarching plot at all, or set up anything for the 7th movie.

The 5th and 7th constitute the climax and finale of the series respectively, with the latter tying up the major loose ends left by the second movie that allow it to stand on its own as comparable to the 5th. The 6th movie is just that awkward middle-child standing in between 2 important installments, but contributing nothing to either. It didn't really have a reason to exist other than dragging the series out, throwing in some yuri pandering and overusing digital effects.
>>
I remember when I first watched Movie 5. That was an experience, and still my favorite among all of them.

i'm into type-moon so i gave it a shot.

the first movie was so bizarre i could. not. look. away.
>strawberry ice cream one-armed omg i cried
>setting up all those callbacks
>killer mood-setting soundtrack
>climactic battle with go go gadget arm

i'm so glad i kept watching. i really dig the fractured timeline (though the remix is worth it for spotlighting the soundtrack). araya was an effective antagonist his appearance in the murder part 2 flashback was jaw-dropping. i like that he's kind of a time-hopper like aoko.

paradox spiral gets all the attention because of that REVEAL but i've grown to prefer sense of pain due to the unflattering depiction of mikiya.

oblivion recorder and future gospel are retreads of stories from kagestu tohya. they are head and shoulders above the first pass at the pertinent thematic elements.

the discordant plot about fire? heroin? fairies? is satisfying in ways that purple envelopes can't imagine. it's also a great lens on touko as a mentor/maniac.

the fake-out in tohno-meets-seo felt like an asspull when i read it and after mikiya-meets-seo it just seems tacky.

extra chorus is awesome because of dat neko.

one of my favorite KnK games to play is "does that count as shiki smiling?"

here's a question about overlooking view:
what is up with mikiya on the couch? how did he get there? did shiki/touko find him on the street? or does fujo (and thus, araya) know where touko's den is?
>>
>>122638845
>what is up with mikiya on the couch? how did he get there? did shiki/touko find him on the street? or does fujo (and thus, araya) know where touko's den is?
His soul wasn't kidnapped when he visited the Fujyou building, but that's the moment she gained influence over him. She didn't steal his soul from his body, but rather coerced it out with that same hypnotic suggestion that drove the girls to kill themselves.

It's supposed to mirror the obsessive nature of the temptation to jump when viewing a high place (or self-destructive impulses in general). After Mikiya saw it for himself, his body returned to Touko's place, but his mind couldn't tear itself away, both figuratively and literally.

I would consider the 1st movie the 2nd worst (only in front of the 6th), it does a very bad job of reeling in the viewer due to how it's placed in the timeline. Viewers who have no prior knowledge of the source material are somewhat screwed with this film, only with the 2nd film does it start to make sense.

As someone who generally doesn't like Nasu's work, the second movie is fucking awful, though I guess it has some kind of important exposition. I hated listening to it, though.

The fifth movie is the only one that's really worth your time, and it's incredible. The third is alright too, I guess.
