You're problem is with being a Toei adaptation.
On average the DB anime adapts 1.3 chapters per episode which is terrible. DBZ is 1.1. So you should read the manga it's much much faster.

The only people who actually like the Dragon Ball adaption are kids who grew up with it in the 90's and have a lot of nostalgia for it. The pacing is fucking garbage, it's poorly animated and it doesn't benefit much from the addition of music and voice acting.

The anime is shit. They took 13-15 page chapters and stretch it into an episode just so they could avoid catching up to the manga. Imagine if HxH 2011 and Brotherhood had double the episodes, it would never get recommended.

Keep watching or read the manga from the beginning. The 22nd Tournament arc and the Piccolo saga are fucking amazing.

Long running shonen anime are ruined by horrible pacing. It's the issue you run into when the manga is ongoing at the exact same time and you need to avoid catching up.
Even the best shonen adaptions tend to suffer from the issue and very few of them are better than the source material because of it. Especially anything made by Toei, because both Dragon Ball and One Piece become practically unwatchable in their late arcs.

Animation as a medium isn't inherently better than comics.
They have their own unique strengths and weaknesses and which a story is more suited for should be decided on a case-by-case basis, not generalized.

It started about a year and a half after or something.
If I remember correctly it was only a few months behind the manga by the end of the Red Ribbon Army arc, though the pacing didn't start getting unbearably really bad until Namek.
