BIG O BIG O BIG O
>le- Im so edgy ill end my animes with shit endings - man
I liked katayama's idea of a serialized MotW show that doesn't really end
>he would rather read squiggles than engross himself into the action and emotion of the show
I don't know Japanese and I don't have the energy or need to learn it.
That being said, I would watch my Russian doll cartoons dubbed because anime is intended for the viewer to actually WATCH what's going on. At least a decent anime.
>this is what stupid Americans believe
it was okay. It became 2meta4u by the end but it was great along the way. They should've extended the series for a few seasons before revealing all this false memories/city resetting crap
Friendly reminder that this guy was the greatest villain.
I like how everyone in the show has a sensible American name: Roger Smith, Dorothy Wayneright, Norman Burg, Alex and Gordon Rosewater, Dan Dastun.
None of that Sosuke Asuka Sohryu Langley Van Whitepiggutalian crap that most animes tend to use as "Western" names
Is that why
Gabriel's such an enormous faggot?
Well shit, I need to watch this show again.
like end of eva. Except they redo some scenes and add some new ones.
But toonami is a shadow of its former self and is only there to broadcast premier shows to get the ratings it needs. I really wish Turner the parent company would stop putting all their eggs into one basket and make the switch to streaming/online like Netflix.
> when the missile launcher opens Dorothy's legs?
What episode was this? I dont think I've ever noticed any blatant fanservice like that since the writers intended Dorothy to be qt without being sexual
I love that about Big O, and that's what really separates it from most other mecha shows where the robots are slim and fast as hell.
Here is what season 3 would have been according to the show's makers.
Angel rests the world, in this universe she is Rodger's assistant, and she made Dorthy human so they could fall in WUV.
Personally, my biggest gripe with Big O is the art style change. Season 1 is gritty as fuck, which suited the setting, while season 2 is all clean.
He's a man whose work is much needed in this city of amnesia.
I feel the same about Big Duo. Look at this sexy beast, goddamn.
Only after courting her for at least a couple years, proposing under a clear moonlit night sky, kissing her passionately on our wedding day, and making vigorous love all night through the pain of my twisted spine from having carried her bridal style to our rose-pedaled bed.
Some women are for sloppy fucking. Dorothy is for loving, honoring, and cherishing.
>That fucking laugh
Blackforest was the best villain.
for the blu rays? Fuck no. I wish Sentai Filmworks can bring them here already because $300 is too much for me.
I'm interested in buying some Big figurines as well as Dorothy, Roger and Schwarzwald
Yes, but not for Big O stuff. Way out of my price range.
To my knowledge, there's not a lot of good options for a Scwarzwald figure.
I wish the Blurays would come down in price, and that Season 2 wasn't so damn fucking expensive.
Yeah, all my stuff. The figmas were in the $80 range each, Season 1 $80, Season 2 was $20 way back when, and the manga was a lucky find at a shitty comic store up in NH at $13 a pop. The Steve Blum autograph was $20 at Anime USA last year. Need to Big O itself to fill the hole no Season 3 left.
season 3 might be possible if Turner/CN become generous and the fans become more vocal but it's been 12 years since season 2 and I imagined some of the voice actors aren't around anymore.
I would love a reboot of the series that follows what Katayama wanted originally.
"Hey *Anon*, I believe a person, a human in particularly, has the right to sleep in. Unfortunately, an android believes otherwise. Showtime."
Going to work right now, don't have time.
So what happened 40 years ago and why did everyone forget about it? Its been years since I have seen this series. Also how were people that were not alive then able to have memories of what happened 40 years ago?
Paradigm City resets because of Angel. Nothing existed before those 40 years in Paradigm City because that's when it resets/is reborn. The point of the show is that the characters slowly come to grasp about their own existence and roles. They're actors and yet they have freedom. The Big O is a show and not real life, hence the whole tv station and Angel Rosewater watching the events unfold
>And by what mechanism does the show "reset"?
Angel piloting Big Venus
>Are they robots? Why dont they grow old?
Aside from the actual robots, no. They don't grow old because reality keeps being reset.
It's a show. The "director" Angel Rosewater resets what happens whenever the events of Paradigm City unfold in a way that she doesn't want (such as Roger falling in love with Dorothy and rejecting her)
The Bigs are there because they're there. The memories of the show are snippets from the past Paradigms
I hate this guy. If I made a list of flaws in Big O, this fucker would be right at the top.
I'm not stopping anytime soon.
>didnt notice the artstyle shift when i watched the show
>read this thread
Oh man its totally fucking ruined to me
blame the japs for not liking the show. CN/AS had to step in to fund it.
There's some instances where you can tell that American animators worked on it like in this once scene in s2 where two news reporters who look like disney characters take a picture of someone
>where two news reporters who look like disney characters
I've got the season one collection but for whatever reason I never bought season two. I guess you think you'll always be able to get your hands on something like that, but reality isn't as nice.
From this video.
I saw that image a few years back and it explained so much about why Season 2 was so different from the first.
Here's some more for you.
I think the newspaper is trying to tell us something.
So should I actually watch this show in english or is that just what a bunch of newfag retards say.
The dub is much better than the japs. The second season of the anime was funded by CN, an Americna company so it's pretty much an American anime. Plus, Dorothy's voice actor is much better and captures the android-equeness of Dorothy. Stop acting like a weab and watch it in English.
If you've really been here since 2006 and you're asking if you should watch Big O in English, I think the only one the joke is on is you.
I think a big part of the problem with the backgrounds is how often they used a soft focus for them when it was completely unnecessary.
Has anyone ever noticed how much this looks like Beck?
I like how there's just the right amount of action, psychological analysis and development for the characters. I think it's better than Eva in that sense since Eva tries to be 2deep4u and pretentious with the excessive "hurr wat it men to b human" crap
get the fau out
Big O is better than Eva, because it's not ignorant enough to tackle mutiple philosophical questions that are far beyond it.
Big O's got its nice ideas and generally sticks with them.
Big O didn't have the right amount of action.
Big O had too much action.
THAT is one of its biggest flaw.
Big O should have shown up every 2-3 episodes but have longer fights rather than all these little ones every episode.
Every episode had to tie its plot to robot fights, character development and the expansion of the world.
With Big O's very out there plot, eccentric characters and mysterious world, it's too much all in one episode.
Would have been better if there were episodes that concentrated on each one individually, I think.
But I don't think I know how to fix Big O
I just know it needs fixing.
There's one of the best series ever in there some where.
Too bad it was mishandled by essentially everyone.
I think it could've have more innovative action, which it did at times - like the one ep. where Roger faces the apparition/ghost and comes up with an idea to beat it. The show could've stayed as a VotW while slow progressing to the big finale since then it would've allowed more time for Roger and Dorothy to develop their relationship.
I've yet to watch an anime that has managed to surpass Big O's setting and OST.
Seriously goddamn everything about the setting I love. And that fucking underground area holy shit.
Schwarzwald was a fucking great antagonist as well.
I never noticed how similar they are
>both 26 episodes (if you exclude EoE)
>both followed a MotW format
>both part of the mech genre
>both have memorable mechs (big O, unit-01)
Only differences I guess is that one (Eva) was more popular, had more characters while the other (big O) had western influences but was somehow more original with its setting, plot and characters
So I listened to this
While watching the Big Duo vs Big O fight clips
In reverse order. Ended right as Big O punched Big Duo through several buildings.
Such a glorious feeling.
THE MYSTERY WAS SORT OF REVEALED IN THE COMPANION ART BOOKS
THERE WAS A FUCK HUGE SET OF MACHINERY BENEATH THE CITY THAT BUILT A PARADIGM CITY LIKE A MANUFACTURING LINE
VENUS REPRESENTS THE CONSCIOUS ERASING OF MEMORIES
AFTER VENUS ERASED ALL THE MEMORIES, THE CITY WOULD BE DESTROYED
AND THEN ANOTHER CITY WOULD COME UP THROUGH THE GROUND
REPEAT UNTIL CLONED TOMATOES TASTE LIKE THE ORIGINAL
ULTIMATELY THE POINT OF THE SHOW IS THAT MEMORIES DON'T MATTER
ALL THAT MATTERS IS THE PRESENT AND THE TIME YOU HAVE THEN AND THERE
THE PAST IS IRRELEVANT
SOMETHING HAPPENED 40 YEARS AGO IT WAS PROBABLY BAD BUT ULTIMATELY WHAT DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHETHER OR NOT YOU KNOW
IT JUST HOLDS YOU BACK FROM CHASING THE FUTURE
Big O is the only anime besides Bebop and Black Lagoon that I actively recommend the dub over the sub.
It's also the only anime with a "confusing" ending that I understood immediately and still don't understand how other people don't get it
The "war" is a set of falsely implanted memories. The Deuses and domes represent the previous society. The Deuses weren't supposed to be uncovered however which causes things to get out of hand. After things start going too far to shit; Venus reactivates to rewind the world back into its normative state like one giant scientific experiment.
I'm still not sure who the big puppetmaster is, but I suspect it was intended to be season 3's plot and is completely irrelevant currently
Am I the only person that thinks that The Big O can be interpreted as you like, as long as you have sufficient evidence?
I feel like this whole one theory allowed theory is limiting.
Some theories are better than the creators theories.
What a marvelous insane faggot
Let's be honest. The entire over arcing storyline was completely batshit insane crazy retarded. I watch it for the delicious English dub, the robots punching each other, and the pseudo future past noire.
I don't know anything about the production of this series, but it seemed to me like they were shooting for a longer story and were suddenly informed they ain't getting any money so they just cramped whatever they had into one convoluted ideep-1you ending.
Pablo Picasso - "It's a harlequin. If you think different you're wrong because I created it. It's a harlequin."
That's almost exactly how it went. Season 1 was produced in Japan and ended in the middle of a battle. It wasn't popular in Japan, but it was popular with western audiences, especially the U.S so CN funded it for season 2. The show was popular on CN/Toonami and CN were going to make a season 3 so they asked the writers to not use the ending they had in mind and to use an ambiguous open-ended one to give them room for a season 3. But season 3 never happen because DVD sales weren't great and so CN gave up on producing season 3 and left it as is. That's why I hate people who defend the anime ending because it wasn't even the best choice out of the possible endings the writers/producers had in mind.
It also explains why everything becomes 2deep4u by season 2 since CN guys had some say in the production of season 2 and told them to reveal some if not most of the mystery behind the show - which I believe was a bad mistake since it progressed the story too fast.
In conclusion, I hope that CN/Adult Swim changes their mind and give us at least an OVA to finish off that shit ending we got since they own the rights to season 2 and could theoretically make an OVA or season 3. Or maybe a reboot of the series that goes by the vision of Katayama would be fine.
I have no problem with an artist defining his work. People can still interpret different meaning out of it.
I see the artist's/writer's input or explanation of their work as factual because they're the ones who created it in the first place.
Totally agree. I had the chance to get all of Season 2 on DVD back at a Newbury Comics in the early 2000's, but passed since I didn't like that season as much. Now I'm kicking myself.
> People can still interpret different meaning out of it.
>I see the artist's/writer's input or explanation of their work as factual because they're the ones who created it in the first place.
I'm not saying my view is right or yours is wrong, because all that should matter is evidence and whether you can prove your claims.
But I'm going to continue arguing for no reason.
So a film, show, play, painting, whatever, is forever tied to the authors work?
Whatever they say goes?
I don't believe that.
An authors claims are evidence on the pile and nothing more.
I'm going to bring up the film, A Better Tomorrow 2 (very artistic, I know).
Tsui Hark (writer, producer) and John Woo (writer, director) both make this movie.
Hark pushes more drama.
Woo pushes more action.
The full movie is four hours long and it has to be cut down.
Both men make their own cuts and make radically different movies.
Both disliked each others film.
To compromise they give the footage to an independent editor and they make a film that goes halfway between both men.
Both men dislike this edit but it goes to theatres with both unhappy.
Who is the "creator" in that aspect?
Also, is Chiaki more creator than Katayama?
What if they have their own individual opinions and merely came to compromise?
Which one is then right?
I was reading the conversation. That's not me.
And they did show the rebuilds on adult swim so it's not like "adult swim babbies" hate evangelion. Everyone into anime has watched it
Not really much going on in this webm, but I made it to show one of my biggest peeves with season 2: random cuts to season 1 footage that just looks out of place now.
Couldn't they just re-animate the scenes?
I know, it's less of the art itself, but more of the medium used to make it that's changed, and just doesn't match up to the original.
The Lupin is strong.
Sentai as fuck
I would say one of the worst
The animation, the story, the logic all gets thrown out the window.
It went from amazing to shit.
I could also be salty because the first and last episode of season 2 are some of the worst anime I've ever seen.
There's that filler text again.
have you ever been so foreign that your eyes were hexagons
It was a good thread. Nice discussion, nice webms. Everything went smooth
