So what's Japan's problem with reverse importing?

Apparently there's a movement from Japan right now to stop ANIME from being released on bluray stateside because of reverse importing.

Instead of looking at the US as the problem, maybe they should look in the mirror and think "Hmmm.... maybe we shouldn't charge so much for blurays?" Because they charge an arm and a leg. I wanted to import JoJo but after seeing the price for volume 1; $90 for six episodes; I said fuck that noise.
>>
>>122420853
>So what's Japan's problem with reverse importing?
They lose money that way.

>"Hmmm.... maybe we shouldn't charge so much for blurays?"
This is how you find the newfags on /a/.
The anime community is inelastic. There's a bunch of guys who will buy the BDs even for these ridiculous prices. The rest of Japan wouldn't buy them even if you offered them for American prices.

Lurk more.
>>
>>122420853
>reverse importing
That's exporting. You're just describing normal importing
>>
>>122420853
Nice shit taste anon.
>>
>>122420853
Japan doesn't care. BDs and DVDs get released in the west long after they're released in Japan, the dedicated people buying that stuff in Japan are the ones who put up most of the money that projects make.

>I wanted to import JoJo but after seeing the price for volume 1; $90 for six episodes; I said fuck that noise.
You sound new. I'm just sad you didn't buy the BDs and blog some more about how they lacked subtitles.

Then why do half-priced volumes sell so much better? I agree with japan's pricing, but this argument is not sound at all.
>>

eat shit.
>>
>>122421371
It's their fault for getting into the anime industry in the first place.

Also, flipping burgers is a more important job than animation. If you're a yank, who the hell is going to flip your burgers? You'll die of hunger.

But then, we have too many fucking Chinese cartoons and 99% of it is crap. It doesn't matter if their job is more skilful. It's what the world needs.

People need food, not Chinese cartoons. You won't die if some faggot studio decides not to make a sequel to your favourite cartoon.

No company is going to cut off an established market like that, it's like throwing away money.

They've got a few options, but by far the smartest would be pressuring American publishers/distributors to prevent their products from being shipped to Japan. Most likely by imposing prohibitively expensive "shipping fees".

No, they wouldn't. They'd have a higher quality if they spent more effort on it.

I meant to say the studio has a very small budget and only pays for so many workers.
Their equipment is probably sub-par as well.

But they are not doing anime episodes in singular weeks.
>>
>>122422695
I like their harems. Seizon, korean desk car. Wish they made more.
>>
>>122422788
Sure, but do you think those shows would really be improved by a higher budget and longer production times? It's a case of diminishing returns, you don't spend twice the money on a show that's going to make the same amount back either way.

how the fuck does anime sell in japan? do they have super strict torrent laws over there?
>>

>>

Most likely by insisting on releases that are months late and/or hardsubbed, so that Amazon Japan doesn't try stocking them instead of the jp release like they did with Persona 4 before it was changed to dub only. The shit video quality helps too even though they don't even need to ask for that.

Well, anime aren't exactly selling exceptionally well in Japan anyway, so they have to charge ridiculous prices per episode to make the production cost back.
Extremely successful anime make an ample surplus, sure, but the majority is barely scraping by.
So, I can understand why they dislike reverse importing. It bears the risk of ruining the anime industry.

>>122425257

>>122421330
>wtf does it even means? Japanese importing US-released anime to Japan?
Yes.
Because Japan has hedged itself into some insane price tiering, where two episodes can run $80, because the otaku will buy it.

Except sales aren't doing so well under that model, because otaku don't actually have unlimited money. They're even saying it in their own Japanese discussions; disc sales of many good shows get crowded out by the one or two hits per season.

This isn't new; Japanese companies have gone through multiple waves of freaking out about shrinking internal markets and the cycle of imports and doubling down on the same strategy over and over again. Part of the boom/bust cycle of US anime is related to Japan occasionally trying to kill the US market by jacking up licensing fees to try to match their wild-ass guess of how many local sales they're going to lose.
>>
I dont get why they are selling BD at such a high price I mean surely the Otaku crowd should be more than 30% of Japanese population surely there is a market for BD hence a lower price is reasonable
