The problem with Muramasa is that the level of japanese it requires is more than you'll need for any other situation.

Speaking as someone that lived in Japan for a while, here is my experience in learning the language: the Genki 1 and 2 books.

If you made it through those 2 books and remembered 90% of it, guess what? You will never have a single issue talking to people in Japan or holding a discussion, because every single conversation in that country is the goddamn same. Sometimes I felt like I was Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. All those people ever talk about is the same shit, and apparently whoever wrote those books knew that.

Which makes one think, why am I going farther at that point? I can speak to any random Japanese person I run into with the same ease as if I were a native. The couple words I didn't know, I picked up from talking to people.

Personal experience too. I haven't gotten anywhere near to mastering Japanese after 2 years, after using it as a motivation.

Maybe I phrased it poorly, but the overall motivation level is more important than the reason for learning a new language (so yes, I'd have responded the same way). If learning for the sake of being able to read raw VNs/manga is that strong of a motivation, then good for you, but it usually isn't enough. I know Bobby Fischer taught himself multiple languages just so he could read the most obscure of foreign chess notes, and he went on to dominate the chess scene. But not everyone is like him.

Back to the topic, being able to read raw VNs/manga was probably not a good enough motivation for anon above to learn Japanese, and if that's the case, he shouldn't go with it because he'll be getting nowhere.
