So as I understand it, everything that happened was the queen snake trying to develop Mary into a suitable host.

The way it went about it though was very convoluted, and it was like it wanted to avoid anybody figuring out that it was acting under its own will. Hebi-kun's existence gives away this secret though.

Hebi-kun does not care about origins, which is completely different from Azami, and this lack of care makes him never use his power to realize the true purpose he was created to fulfill. Hebi-kun has a strange fixation on loading blame onto Azami and Mary. He was made to do this because it prevents them from catching onto the queen. He also put an unusual emphasis on "it is a power only YOU possess" while telling Azami about creating the other world.

So everyone was being tricked into doing things while fully believing it was their own choice.

Well, I suppose her backstory was ok, the allure of not knowing where she was from interested me though. Plus, they really toned down her quirkiness progressively. I think it's also partially cause the series was rushed as hell and tried going in depth with all the characters, it was just a mess and I grew increasingly apathetic towards the story and all the people in it.

I will give the surreal situations and design of particular scenes credit though. But that's somewhat expected from Shaft.

I really liked Momo's flashback scenes. And how the people were represented as objects, the feeling of her being alienated and different growing up was represented really well in those scenes. Or when Hibaya was going through that endless dream cycle, that was a good representation of his despair and fear of losing Hiyori.(A concept that didn't really even manifest itself towards the end of the series unfortunately)

It had a lot of potential, the 1st episode pulled me in, but the rest was just a complete let down.

Momo got off pretty well compared to the three orphans. She was actually capable of going to school and wasn't worried about being abducted and vivisected.

And the Hibiya dream thing wasn't because of shaft. It would have been the same if it was done by any other studio. His relationship with Hiyori was also never really explained in the anime. Hiyori was a popular girl from a rich family, and Hibiya was the one who obsessed over her more than anybody.

He secretly recorded her voice so he could make a talking Hiyori doll.
