You have Shinji, the guy that's been abandoned and verbally abused by his father, who is forced to pilot a giant mecha over and over again, forming PTSD upon his insecurities. Oh! And the mecha has his mother's soul and possibly memories encased in the mecha.

You have Misato, who tries and fails repeatedly to connect to people, so she tries to connect the only way she knows how: through sex for those people she really wants to connect to, but is having the most difficult time doing so. She also has parental issues, and Suvivor's guilt.

You have Ritsuko, a "mad scientist with mother issues so obsessive, she's emulating her mother - even taking up her mother's former lover so she can BE her mother's substitue, and find validation. All of this, while hating her mother, and loving her so much, that the super computer that drives their whole operation is based on her mother's psyche.

Then Rei. Hoo boy, Rei. Part of a clone of Shinji's mom and Lilith, she has not learned true emotion, but as the series progresses, she learns and understands.. and hates. The things she used to admire the most (her "husband" becomes the things she hates, once the other impetus in her life, her "son" Shinji comes into play. Then emotions start building and, with so little real experience with emotions, starts cracking, which is why she tries to connect with her son like Misato tries to connect to people: through sex as physical contact.
