The real reason Dragon ball > Dragon ball Z is the far lower power level of everything. Guns where a legitimate danger to a sizable portion of the cast and normal humans where relevant. Granted most of the time the normal humans (ones that couldn't chi a beam together) where relevant to foil how strong main cast members where.

DBZ on the other hand starts with a threat of the entire world dying to the hands of one being. Vegetta blows up an entire planet and moon on the way to earth. (without charging I might add. He does it casually.)

So right from the get go DBZ decides to be superman level and to try to one up itself in threats / power levels the rest of the way through.

Mind dragonball has always been a little nuts.

I feel like DBZ is the perfect example of over-explaining/over-developing something. It's nice when things can be simple and magical. Instead of just "Hey. The reason you have a tail is because you're an alien. The reason piccolo looks like this is because he's an alien. The whole reason you're strong is alien" instead of just...goku being some magic monkey boy. It almost feels like it cheapens his accomplishments because...OF COURSE he's powerful. He's part of a supreme race of warrior aliens.

It really does. Everything got stiffer and less lively. Also I kinda preferred it when Goku was muscular but not like...RIPPLING. Saiyan Saga Goku was my favorite version for that.

Having just read through the entire manga for the first time recently, I actually think that everything from the 22nd to the 23rd TB was the best overall arc of the story.

there's a reason Toriyama had Goku's nimbus destroyed for a while until he got it back. he had to do more adventuring when he couldn't fly.

I just finished Dragon Ball. The latter half of that was even much less enjoyable to me. It was almost completely serious. I loved the lighthearted, comedic, ecchi, fun first half.

Could I get some series recommendations similar to that first half?
