I don't know I can't think in the idea of getting married so soon, I like to be single, to live alone and go to college. For me getting married was when you're getting to an age when you're getting kind of old and you already know who is gonna be the person you're going to spend the rest of your life. At least ataru in the OVA of Inaba doesn't get married until he is like 30 years olds.
Going back to your question, even when Ataru loves going out with women, he is not an asshole, he knows that if he bangs Lum he got to get married with her, or banging some other girl would be a horrible thing he could do to Lum. He is just a 17 years old teenager, and late 18 years old young adult, he still want to be single.

He was pretty much me in high school, only better, Ataru was awesome for this, he was really normal, and even with all the shit that happen to him he was always happy, and ready to go for more adventures and troubles. He made two movies, went in a lot of dates with other girls, to the movie theater or circus, with his friends to all kind of places, to the beach with Lum in a double date with Mendou and Shinobu, he played a lot of sports. But he reminds me to how I was back then but only the negative side of his life, lazy ass, with parents that pretty much ignore you, the people I had for friends pretty much were the Lum Stormtroopers(especially Megane)

The endings of this show were god tier.
