It doesn't really matter where you start with Lupin since there is no overarching plot and only a very loose canon. Frankly, it kind of stuns me how many people on /a/ ask so I wonder if there should be some kind of chart if there isn't already.

Anyway, watch the 1971 series first. It's consistently good and I have allways felt the weekly television format suits Lupin the best.

People on /a/ ask it because they're young millennial who didn't or couldn't watch the shows/movies as kids or they've got into this frankly lunatic mentality of watching a show or a series according to completely arbitrary orders.

They should either watch it according to production order or randomly, this is especially true for Lupin where everything is very loosely connected.

I can watch Secret of Mamo, Gold of Babylon, Pink Jacket and Cagliostro in this order and nothing will change as there's no major plot.

Also, to all the faggots reccomending Cagliostro over other movies, that is together with Fujiko mine the most alienating Lupin work ever, especially if you haven't read the manga and watched anything else, reccomnding it over all the rest is stupid, stop doing that.

No, Lupin is the typical Miyazaki male MC who is pretty much a good guy and always a gentleman. He barely even uses his gun in the movie because like all Miyazaki male protagonists, he never kills and/or is pretty much a pacifist. Lupin in the manga is a pervert who actually rapes and is especially cunning and dangerous.

I believe most people think of Lupin as a thief who comes up with elaborate schemes with disguises and gadgets to steal stuff and/or stop actual villains. He'd act pervy most of the time but in a child-friendly way and is clumsy at times but still notoriously skilled at whatever he does.

Honestly, I think Miyazaki's Lupin III attempts to take more away from Arsene Lupin, at least in his preference to avoid violence whenever possible. Hell, Castle of Cagliostro is already a big reference to La Comtesse de Cagliostro.

Castle of Cagliostro is a great fucking movie, but it's not really a Lupin movie. IMO it should be considered its own thing.

I wouldn't say it isn't a Lupin movie. But it's certainly a lot more palatable than other entries into the franchise due to the sheer family friendliness.

Cagliostro is Lupin filtered through Miyazaki, so there's a lot of innocence and whimsy.

The TV series are a lot more raunchy with Lupin basically being a cross between James Bond and the Wolf from Tex Avery cartoons, with them getting a lot more manic and wacky the further from Green Jacket you go.

Of course, this caught a lot of people off-guard with The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and Daisuke Jigen's Gravestone which are fairly dark and serious.

Honestly, it's a very flexible cast.

My only issue with The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is that the Fujiko-centric episodes are the weakest.

The strongest episode is mostly just Lupin and Jigen exploring a pyramid while Fujiko's screentime is only a handful of minutes.

She's a fine character but she really can't carry an episode without extensive involvement from the rest of the main cast.

Agreed, but it's plenty of issues too.

Mostly, the show was supposed to showcase Fujiko and set up her backstory, except said backgroung went from uninsteresting to kind of clichè to fucking stupid, all the while making the episodes focused on her the weakest ones and falling apart all around in the last few episodes, just like Okada is used to write.

But i could've watched another 2 seasons of Sawahiro voicing the protagonist and Koike working on designs (i like how they were rendered on screen too).
The OST wasn't exceptional but perfectly on point with show's atmosphere.
