The entire script likely needed to be redone based on what I saw, and he has someone, but he hadn't done it as of last night, and even if he finished it still needs editing and typesetting.

This is why my group hasn't taken it on either. Jokes are just too damn hard to translate over properly. And if you make the wrong decision about any of those jokes you get flooded with "Ahh ur shit u cant translate wow feck u". And if you translate them literally then you get a shitton of complaints too. There's literally no way to sub an anime which is full of jokes, without having hundreds of people all with different opinions pick it to pieces because it didn't cater to their personal opinion.

But with this script, the first one I ran into was a jokes about 肛門 and 校門. Honestly, with stuff like that I'd just do a TL note. In general I prefer small TL notes to completely re-writing things to the point where none of the authors voice is left in the work, and with something like SYD if you decide to localize instead of using TL notes, you're basically ad-libing an entire script.

At least with manga you have the text and kanji there so it's impossible to mis-hear something, and if the joke relies on a pun created by kanji's double meanings, that's far easier to see.

With anime, a huge amount of time for me as a TL is just sitting there with a blank face going, "Okay, so she said _____ which means _____. ____ can be read ____ which could be the joke but I'm not 100% sure. I could translate it literally but it doesn't make sense in English if I do it. Should I rewrite the joke? How can I rewrite the joke while still keeping the mood of the scene the same and the characters displayed on screen per second under 17?"
And blah blah blah blah, it's very time-consuming.

The problem I have is that most of my listening practice is talking to friends, and no Japanese people talk like anime characters at all, so it's all foreign (on top of the things you mentioned). The very first line starts halfway through the dialogue. That's not okay.

Second shot: Overlapping dialogue ends about 80ms after the base dialogue ends.

Third shot: Similar to above, the Overlapping dialogue starts 20ms or so after the base dialogue.

Fourth shot: 10ms gap between lines, not snapped.

These subs are absolutely riddles with small mistakes like this. These are completely valid criticisms, I don't see why you have to get so mad.
