I know "Chinese cartoons" is just a joke for "Japanese anime", but have any of you actually watched the animations that come out of China?

For a nation that supposedly has so much economic power, its animation is so embarrassingly shit when compared to Japan's it's not even funny.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0267Ghj1Us
Link related. It's the most popular, family-orientated Chinese anime. The first episode of its 2014 season. It looks like some cheap-ass as fuck Flash animation. The merchandise of this franchise is staggeringly profitable within China.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deJUqYdDMG4
And here we have Doraemon in 2014, subbed in Viet.

Just look at the fucking quality of this shitty family-humour Japanese anime.

Why are the Chinese so bad at basic animation?

Because most Chinese students who study in animation eventually end up working overseas.

IIRC some years ago Tomino went to Fudan University for a lecture, the media who accompanied him there took some interviews with the students, and most of them say they would probably wind up working overseas since the demand for animation in their country is low and the pay is cheap.

China's cartoons were actually a tad ahead of Japan with the amount of stuff that they had in the 60's. The Wan Brothers and their interpretation of the Journey to the West with Havoc from Heaven is better than Japan at the time artistically like Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion and Cyborg 009.

Mao's Cultural Revolution basically destroyed that and Japan had overtaken China in animation by the time they repaired the damage in the late 70's. Nowadays, most of the animation is too Japanese-influenced.IMO.

It's either that or the animation is like what you linked where they animate as little as possible. Nothing unique about it and Japan does it better overall when it matters.
>>
>>121714567
China has a pretty low power level when it comes to entertainment in general, mainly because they see animation and video games that aren't Brain Age as childish. They also have to appease the government censors that refuse anything that isn't patriotic, deviant, or damaging to their culture. Furthermore, their pressure to conform is far more serious than Japan's, so no NEETs/Hikkis to really cater to. China is a very conservative culture and proud of it. The only reason China industrialized is because Japan walked all over them in WWII and America's imperialism.

It's a real shame too, because I'd love to play a Chinese fighting game. Source is my Chinese friend.

BECAUSE OF JAPAN (And themselves)

NO SERIOUSLY, China might be whining like a bitch about Japan but they're partly the reason why China isn't a developed animation superpower today.

China's animation industry was on par with Japan decades ago. In fact, China released the first Asian animated feature in 1941 shown in this post here: >>121714700

Japanese imperialists prevented chinks to work on animation. The conditions were hard due to the war.

In the 1960s, the wan brothers released Havoc in Heaven which won awards but it was banned during Mao's cultural revolution and animators were sent to work in the fields.

And of course, the pay today is total shit. One of the animators who who worked on Astro Plan complained about the industry there. He had no say in any of the creative department, and the execs basically decided everything. "Well this macross thing seem popular, alright let's just make our cartoon exactly like Japan's".

China has talent for art and animation, but current circumstances are just so bad there. Most Chinese animators just move abroad.

And here's an amateur but informative documentary about Chinese animation.

If it isn't the first world paying actors is almost always far cheaper than attempting decent animation.

Though I won't profess to know if China has celebrity actors of the same rough ballpark as other parts of the world.

And since local animation isn't developed, they can't higher any local talent, who all go work overseas instead.

It's not supposedly. They do have it. Not per capita, but the government / nation does have fantastic economic power.

Guess what, they don't direct it towards moe girls... they have actual prostitutes, wifes, mistresses for this.

It's the lower classes that need waifus. They don't really get shit in China, though.

More like politics. On one hand, they officially regarded pornography, ecchi etc. as threat to public stability (and they still kinda do).

On the other hand waifus isn't what starving and/or poor peasants want right now, anyways.

Medicine, food, shelter, mobility, and maybe the electronics required to even display anything (smartphone, tv, ....) are obviously higher on the list.

The richer city dwellers just import, it rocks the boat far less than if the government or anyone affiliated (anyone that matters or has economic power... like, you know, TV stations, which fund this in Japan) spent money on cartoons.

The Warlords, which is about the Christian Taiping Rebellion in the 1860s, had pretty realistic battles with blank weapons and 19th century firearms:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns8379_8pDQ

Or The Fall of Ming as well. But its more a political commentary about endemic corruption and made to support the current Chinese leadership in mind.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O68dRTCDA40

For modern Chinese/civil war era setting, The Assembly is pretty good and had realistic fire-fights (also lots of feels):

Red Cliff's about half-and-half. There's lots of Dynasty Warriors shenanigans with the higher ups running into the field and throwing cannon fodder left and right, but it's a war epic so they got a lot of elaborate formation choreography too.
>>
>>121714567
To be fair, Japan blows any country out of the water in terms of animation except for the USA. It's not just China but countries like the UK, France and Germany have prosperous economies (and higher living standards than China too) yet can't produce any animation on the level of Japan or America.

Japan is really, really good at animation, that's it.
>>
>>121721123
Japan really only has variation in animation to give them an edge over west. They make animation with lots of different genres and plotlines to all ages of audience. Western animation is pretty much entirely kiddie shit.

If west started broadening its horizons in animation Japan would be BTFO.
>>
>>121715519
Why are you posting with /jp/ mannerisms on /a/?
>>
>>121721969
I doubt it. If we move to another medium and make the comic-manga comparison, American comics suck pretty hard. That's mostly because only two companies are actually large enough to influence the market, and both produce the same old shit.

Now that I think about it, it's the same with animated movies in America (Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks... that's it) except those actually produce pretty good movies from time to time.

Maybe it's not just variation, but a market structure that makes it very hard to access for new writers without aligning themselves with an already existant company and their "doctrine". Meanwhile in Japan, doujin writers can become popular out of fucking nowhere (for example, the guy who wrote Monmusume).

I guess western animation markets need to be more "open" to smaller companies and independent writers.
>>
>>121721969
The West doesn't even need to start animating.

They just need to write good storylines and outsource everything to Korea, which is what the West already does. It just has no variety for animation.
>>
>>121722138
Hilariously enough when it's west vs Japan in animation it's only about western and japanese writing while all the animation work on both camps is done in Korea.
>>
>>121722138
>>121722177
So what do American and Japanese animators do then? Are they jobless? Do they move to Korea?
>>
>>121721123
France can be good.
>>
Because the Chinese don't see it as an art form. Look at recent Chinese dramas after the Hallyu wave. They certainly upped their fucking standards. The moment a country starts to take the medium seriously standards go up. Look at most cartoons now. Older cartoons were slice of life with little development or little heart. Now that everyone's grown up and people passionate about animation can work in the industry you're getting a lot more clever and well-written animation, even on Disney and Cartoon Network.
>>
>>121714815

China is what happens when you fail to stop the elite from taking everything.

You can be the most productive nation on the planet, but if only a few are reaping the benefits of everyone's hard work, the average guy is still going to be living in a shack with a community water facet as his sole water supply.

America beware.
