There are plenty of entertaining harems, like Saekano or Haganai. As long as the humour is good, the harem premise shouldn't matter. The only issue is when shows drop trying to have good comedy and instead focus on some shallow as fuck fantasy world that we have all seen before.

In my argument, at least Haganai and Saekano did try to improve the formula, and the latter giving more thought, purpose and goal. So it felt a bit more authentic than "fantasy school battle harem #2859" whereas any additional members are basically just additional female comrade #11608 to stir mishaps #35240 and pointless fanservice #203766. This is the real problem, it's like the curse of light novels. You get an interesting set up, like "a group of social dropouts create a club for making friends despite all hating each other" or "an ordinary group of schoolkids get superpowers, but only use them for fucking around" or "an estranged brother and sister begin to mend their relationship when he agrees to help her hide her love of anime" and it lasts for all of one volume before the the entire initial premise turns into glorified window dressing in favor of the endlessly fascinating dramatic question of WHO WILL WIN THE MCB OWL. A question the answer to which can almost certainly be answered by just checking who the first volume's cover has a picture of.
