How important are backgrounds?
>>121482481
Not important at all.
They distract from the characters.
>>121482481
A good background won't make up for a bad story but a good background will enhance a good story. Plus they're pretty to look at.
>>121482847
Coppelion is a good example.
>>121482481
According to Kubo they're perfectly irrelevant to success.
>>121482605
>>121482605
Beat me to it
The importantest.
Very important
>>121482481
In a lot of animu they are the utmost of it's art.
In others they're there just for the sake of being there.
Personally I love them, they bring you into the world more than anything else.
Couple it with good sounds and you're golden.
>>121482981
Some of those are just incredible.
Due to the nature of animation the characters are generally pretty void of detail, the backgrounds are the chance to recover that sense of realism.
They're also key in developing the mood. An anime without appropriate backgrounds will be seriously limited and most people won't even notice because it's such a subtle aspect that you don't even think about.
>>121483032
>In a lot of animu they are the utmost of it's art.
What does that mean?
>>121483025
>>121483051
That's more like the architecture/layout. Background would refer to thinks like the sky/trees with the characters drawn on top.
Also, those production notes are really really cool.
>>121483215
He means it's the best part of anime.
>>121483215
what >>121483277 said.
Either the best part or the defining aspect of the art style.
For example, bakemonogatari backgrounds were brilliant, specifically the ones intended to portray intense heat.
>>121482481
Establishing shots or scenery porn backgrounds are getting better, but backgrounds with movement be it people, cars or wind are still lacking often omitting the vehicles or people that really should be there.
What's lacking is still fluidity in movement of characters and that sheer uncanny valley of human anatomy which is often shadeless and a weird single complexion across the body. Some studios must be hiring stylists considering some of the fashion pieces characters sometimes wear.
Movie quality fluid characters in every scene when? Still shots where nothing but the tiny mouth (not even the fucking jaw) moving of the character talking needs to go.
>>121483448
If you look at it from a technical style SHAFT's backgrounds are really overrated. A lot of them have waaaaaay too many filters plastered on for the hell of it.
>>121483518
The "filters" look good imo.
>>121483518
Yeah, but it's different.
It's also minimalistic which I feel suits it pretty well.
The way they use colours is nice too.
Just overall they have got a system of background production that is solid and works well with what they needed in their anime.
The backgrounds themselves are pretty meh, but they're just used so well that they're made good.
In terms of background quality alone a lot of things trump shaft.
P.A Works backgrounds are top-tier.
>>121483562
By filters do you mean gradients?
Their use of gradients is very hit and miss.
>>121483575
Been pretty unnoticeable in Shiro, not that a building and the usual city is something to look for.
>>121483489
>Movie quality fluid characters in every scene when?
What you're asking for is entirely unreasonable. Please use your brain before saying such stupid things in future.
>>121483489
CG will deliver anon.
>>121483574
That's one of the worst gifs I've ever seen. Way to butcher a Shinkai background, redditfags.
What makes a good background?
>>121483833
Composition, lightning, mood.
>>121482981sauce
>>121483887
boku no pico
>>121483887Lurkmore
Seriously I only get an obscure italian site and the picture isn't even there when I open it
your Google is probably used to you searching mangu and chinese cartoons
>>121483999
It's /a/'s AOTY.
>>121482481
Not important by themselves. Correct scene composition is. Good/Proper background is part of it and shines through it.
>>121484036
>implying
Backgrounds are very important in SoL/iyashikei anime.
>>121483833Lens Flare
>>121483754
>CG
Most backgrounds are basically CG. Disney did it first with Tarzan, 2D assets arranged in 3D space.
It's cost-effective for main places because you don't need to draw new backgrounds for every cut but just take a new picture from whatever position you want.
>>121483999
But the title is there.
>>121482481
Ask SHAFT.
>>121484147
>But the title is there.
well fug now I feel stupid
>>121484121
Pretty sure it's what they all do anyway. Isn't it also how most people are taught to draw first, using a real reference, pictures just make learning the sizing, scale, angles etc easier (also helps lessen the weird shit we have in QUALITY threads).
Landscape artists normally start looking at what they want to paint as is.
>>121483833
Let's see:
-Chromatic Abbreviation
-subtle Photo reference
-subtle Photo texture
-Lens flare
-Gaussian Blur
and so on..
>>121483575
You mean Studio Easter.
>>121482605
>Literally the first reply
Faith in humanity: restored
>>121484224
i giggled.
Well, if a certain anime studio has an entire french team dedicated to background design, I guess its pretty important.
>>121484231
I don't see Studio Eater credited for Uchouten Kazoku, rather it's Bamboo.
>>121482981
It just feels like they took a bunch of photos then traced/painted over it.
>>121483678
And then there's this. >>121484414
>>121483518
>too many filters
>Shaft
>not Ufotable or GoHands
>>121484495
>AKB
Is that the name of the show? I couldn't find anything, but a little girly show, which looks nothing like these.
>>121484951
That's the one.
>>121485150
Huh, I guess lolis make a whole lot of difference in the scenery.
Watching NnA was like visiting an art gallery. It definitely increased my enjoyment and immersion.
so, this is a scenery porn thread in disguise?
>>121484951
Yep.
If you're watching it, I hope you like Macross, because the show can also be called Macross0048 and will have no problems fitting into the Macross lore.
>>121485273
thanks for the new wallpaper.
>>121485391
You are welcome
>>121482481
Very important if you want to give your anime some sense of identity.
>>121485316
Thanks, but I'm not interested in it that much. I just wanted to find more scenery porn.
Behind some of these beautiful background arts are artists in SEA getting paid less than $500 a month.
>>121484495
Also, if any of you follow Thomas Romain on Twitter, he posted some drawings of the backgrounds he did for Aquarion Evol, and the artworks he done for M3's OP.
Satelight and their french artists.
>>121483575
Backgrounds are the only good things in PA shows
>>121485531
So, we should treat these like blood diamonds?
>>121485573
$500 a month in those countries aren't too bad.
>>121485273
>reverse image search

>>121485573
Blood paintings
>>121485614
Or is this just fantasy?
I wouldn't rate it super important but I'd want it to be standard quality not some ugly shoddy piece of shit but not too over the top.
>>121485550
He also posted tons of his earlier works on his now-defunct google plus group.

>>121482481
Important in the sense that they provide context for the animation. Many people underestimate the importance of composition in a film, and backgrounds are indispensable to that. However, a well-composed background doesn't need to be over-rendered to be beautiful.
>>121483887
non non biyori
Literally integral to the success of the show.
Someone post the cgi from Parasyte
>>121485273
I'm game.
Traditional medium.
>>121485799
There's always this faggot.
Some of these pics make me kinda wish I could travel there and explore.
I kind of miss the textured watercolor look backgrounds used to have. Too many look weirdly shiny and blurry now.
>>121485911
This, I forgot to save it from yeterday's thread.
Bahi makes the best backgrounds.

>>121488355
Dragon Ball tier BG. I hope you're just joking.
>>121488475
Dragonball had great backgrounds mate. Simplicity isn't a bad thing.
Each time I see these great background threads, I step outside my house and I'm confronted with dull grey sky with dark green grass and half dead trees, it's depressing.
And people wonder why I rarely leave my room.
>>121482847
I'd disagree; I fucking loved Eureka Seven AO simply because of the visuals.
The story was absolute bullshit and the characters sucked but the visuals just made me erect.
>>121488779
Just because the trees have gone dormant for the winter doesn't mean they're half dead. Try going outside on a clear winter morning sometime. Everything looks twice a beautiful when the sun is low in the sky.
anyone here got Gurren Langann scenery?

MODSSSSSSSSSSSSS
>>121488992
The backgrounds in SnW were fucking beautiful.
There's something about seeing background characters actually interacting with the background or one another, moving and doing shit like they're not decorations, that makes me appreciate backgrounds even more.
Wish it was easier to get that done without resorting to lazy shortcuts or awkward CG.
>>121490947
Ugh, shut up!
>>121490821
Yes, he has.
Look at >>121488599
>>121486290
That isn't a screenshot.
Mushishi is still a beautiful show though. Makes you want to go into the outdoors and hike a trail or something.
>>121491073
The art always looks really mediocre and dull to me.
What site do you guys use to get wallpapers now that wallbase is done for?

I think /w/ has more links somewhere.
