You're right to suspect that it's impossible to earn 70m yen solely as a VA. Even A-lister only make around 50k/day. If she managed to be almost fully booked for a year (like Kana Hana), that's still only around 200 working days.

50k * 200 = 10m yen. Rest of it necessarily come from singles, concert, and appearance fees, which are far more lucrative. In effect, anime is simply a way to get exposure, a mean to an end to rack in the real money.

Well, it seems kind of obvious based on the money part. Well educated people in those countries make a lot by their standard, but a minimal amount by western standards. I know people here couldn't give a single fuck about E-sports, but a russian team won the first Dota 2 International, and split a 1m paycheck 5 ways+fees. One of the players who lives in the Ukraine has been able to support his family just off that for 3+ years and has commented you could live comfortably with less than 3000 USD a year.
