It depends on the context, I guess. Although I do not doubt it's likely just a bad translation, way back when before moe was the big word, it was kawaii. Especially in the west, we used to use 'kawaii' in the place of moe before it was an established word I guess, we would bitch about the 'big wave of kawaii' anime and so on.

So they might have been trying to make him look like a super casual/out of date with the times? Probably not, if he said 'moe' and they put 'kawaii' then it's likely just s shit error but yeah.

Speaking of weird reverse 'translations', this bugged me for a very long time. The spoken line says they're like three sisters (sanshimai) but for some reason the subber subbed it as them looking 川 (kawanoji), which is an actual thing, but not even remotely close to what she said. It's absolutely impossible to mix up those sets of syllables. It's like some bizarre backwards localization.
