Believe it or not, Tom Cruise looks exactly like the MC from the manga / light novel, apparently, and because the studio that bought the publications had planned on serializing it anyway, they thought that apparently tom cruise on the big screen in an adapted version of the LN / Manga would make a more entertaining and fitting MC in place of it being an animated series.

OP here, I'm not saying it was bad, and in fact I did enjoy it(mostly cause I have a hard on for timeloops), certainly better than a lot of recent action films

Like, I don't think MuvLuv could be adapted in any sort of medium besides VNs. I mean, it definitely has too much content for a movie, even if the movie was really long; it's just too massive. And if they tried to make it into an anime, it'd be too hard to get the green light for a season two if season one was Extra. Extra is great when you tie it in with the rest of the story, but Extra by itself isn't anything special (albeit intentionally) and the viewership just wouldn't be there, I feel. If this was a Western series as opposed to an anime, this point would be even more significant, I think.

I did think Edge of Tomorrow was great though, and it definitely made me think of MuvLuv.

There already exist anti-laser armor technology. You just need a material which will poof out and produce a cloud on hit. After the initial impact, the energy of the laser will be absorbed into the cloud instead, away from the surface.

They DO have armor, it's just that laser-class lasers are so powerful that it doesn't last long enough. So they instead opt for more agile TSFs with a little armor. They can withstand a standard laser-class for a couple of seconds and have automatic evasive maneuvers built in. I don't think it helps with super-lasers, though.

I'm pretty sure a smokescreen-type cloud was employed in at least one of the MLA VNs, but the problem was that it was administered via TSF. I'm not sure how else you would disperse it except via special artillery bombing, since flying aircraft to do so would defeat the purpose.

Actually in Alternative they used artillery shells filled with a mix and mercure and other chemicales. When they shot the rounds, the Laser Class would blow them up in the sky, creating a large smokescreen wich would prevent them from blowing up the normal artillery shells. See Kagoshima arc.
It stopped working when the BETA eventually figured it out and started to let themselves get blown up by the chemical shells.

So yeah, they did use anti-laser tactics in MLA.
