Originally it's stated that his obsession is based on him rejecting reality and trying to find some something to fill in the hole left by Yanagi.
From what I myself theorized, Maria's box turned Kazuki into her Knight and mindfucked him into needing to have an obsession, something to be loyal to. However, as a Knight, he had no princess to protect, something to obsess desperately over. With nothing left but his understanding of what an "everyday life" is and a heart broken by Yanagi, he became obsessed with the idea of begin a normal person to the point where people could feel that he's insane even though he's trying to be as normal as possible.
Then Maria came in and he was forced to throw away his obsession with daily life and had Maria take that place, making her both his Princess and the center-point of his insanity. At that point, he was no longer restricted by the need to be "normal", which is why his madness spilled over to the point where it became obvious to everyone.

I thought that Maria's willpower/strong desire or whatever managed to materialize 'O', who is Aya, her sister, who would grant wishes and to counterbalance it, it created/turned Kazuki into her Knight, the Empty Box, to destroy the wishes and bring back the daily life. Thus, Maria keeps going around trying to find 'O' to complete her own box, which resets her memory, and her knight's mission is to stop her and kill 'O'. Maybe he would disappear after killing 'O' as well.

My theory is that Kazuki is still obssesed with everyday life, but not his anymore, but with Maria's, that's his raison d'etre, to turn Maria into a normal girl again.
