In UBW, he was intolerable (while less intolerable in the VN than in the anime) throughout the entire thing. Though this is more personal, I didn't like the final fight and conclusion because it felt really forced.
The end of HF was awesome. It was just Shirou getting the shit beat out of him and then dying to prevent Angry Manjew from fucking things up.

Archer was having a post-life crisis. He lived his entire life without regrets, but spent his afterlife endlessly killing for Alaya. Through this, he started to think his past choices were a mistake; he grew cynical, and wanted to lash out against himself and his father for making him the way he was.

In UBW, he repeatedly tries to get Shirou off the path he was going down, but he keeps on failing. By the end he figures he'll just out and out kill him. He knows it likely won't change his future, but he doesn't care. He just wanted to take his anger out. The trick is is that Shirou's relentlessness in the fight starts to get to him. He sees the unfiltered idealism he used to have. Shirou doesn't break, and leaves him basically in awe. He starts to question if his choices were actually wrong, and by the end, he reaches the same conclusion Shirou does. It wasn't a mistake.

I swear 90% of the people who don't like UBW don't actually understand the story.

Why didn't Archer kill Shirou when he was walking him home earlier in the route if his only goal was just to kill Shirou with his own hands? His original goal was to try and direct Shirou away from being a hero peacefully, but he threw that goal away when he remembered how stubborn Shirou is after the first fight with Caster. During the fight with Shirou, Archer accepted that this Shirou wouldn't become like him so 1. the paradox would never happen because this Shriou isn't him and 2. Shirou's ideals in a form where he accepts his limits are beautiful and worth keeping. Therefore, killing Shirou was pointless and Archer lost the will to fight.
