Don't get me wrong, I like this anime, but god damn. I'm on episode 70 and It gets really annoying that Yang has become a plot device of "magically win the battle no matter how shitty the scenario"
They just don't put any effort into how he wins, instead he just makes a decision and somehow it just works even though common sense would says it doesn't work
It has stopped becoming entertaining to watch because of him.
>>
The cardboard characters aren't a big help for the quality of the show. LOGH is overrated.

Except it's counterbalanced by the fact that his forces are vastly outnumbered and his subordinates are outclassed. Don't forget who is Kaiser: not Yang. I think Reinhard and Yang balance each other out quite nicely with good supporting characters to fill the gaps.

Your're doing it wrong
>>
Based on what I know from reading about history and playing Rome Total War most of his maneuvers make tactical sense

Battle of Shiva is fucking retarded though
>>
>>120982203
I recall some really good tactics being used, such as Amlitzer and the one with the two forts. One that really stood out was Yang's "Nelson Touch" at Doria.
>>
>>120982203
That's because pretty much every single battle in LoGH is based on an actual battle in real life.

The problem is that these actual battles were on a 2d plane, whereas space opens up a large number of possibilities that most of the battles simply ignore.
>>
>>120982100
no I just get annoyed that no matter what the situation if yang is involved its just an automatic win

He's lost before. Remember the failed invasion of the Empire? Yeah he called it, but he still lost.

All of the important characters in this show are telepathic but lose their mind-reading ability whenever it's convenient for the plot, not just Yang

>>
>>120980982
LoGH has always been more about the politics of war than the actual combat tactics, to enjoy it you really gotta just understand that the author is in fact not a strategic genius.
>>
>>120983274
Kircheis had Yang-like generalship from what
I remember. Won in similar ways (outnumbered with minimal casualties). Might have been better than Reinhard if they had similar ambition.
>>
>>120983585
no, in the cannon he was just as talented as kaiser reinhard
>>

Sure, but Reinhard had that whole warrior "We must win on even terms" mentality. Kircheis and Yang weren't above trickery to save lives.

That's only really the case because the truly exceptional individuals that do make it to power make them look fucking pathetic in comparison.

Napoleon is an example of this, as is Admiral Nelson. They seem like they're just good, but the truth of the matter is they're absolutely exceptional men that are only born once or twice per generation. They are people that are born to excel at a particular task or skill, and just so happen to be in an opportunity to put their talents into practice. That's super rare in and of itself.

As much as I loved this show, the earth cult pissed me off so much I had to take breaks in the endless marathon.

>>120980982
>even though common sense would says it doesn't work
Your "common sense" doesn't apply to fictional settings because you don't know about the constraints.

LOGH tells you NOTHING about how their tech actually works. It shows you certain effects, e.g. jamming affecting targeting and communications, zephyr particles rendering certain types of weapons ineffective and so on, but otherwise it's rather stingy with information.

And it does so for good reason: due to that the viewer can't estimate how things fit together and suspension of disbelief kicks in - at least for non-retarded people who start to apply "common sense" when they're not given enough information to pass judgement.

It's nice that you're such a super special snowflake who's too smart for this show. I guess you should stop watching anime then because it clearly isn't your type of entertainment.
>>
>>120985247

LoGH was unusually gory at times.
>>
>>120985422
The only break of more than a day I took was after that episode.
>>120985434
A lot of the tech is just there so the plot works, but I don't mind it and it keeps suspension of disbelief pretty well. You could also say that the "dumb" tacticians involved have been doing things the exact same way for years and it took someone truly exceptional to break the mold. Not to mention that Phezzan profited from the war and would tip off one side if the other was about to attack, encouraging endless stalemate.

One should also consider that we're still dealing with entertainment media here. The goal of this show is to entertain people, not to provide a scientific simulation of warfare in space.

In most cases, the other guys being "idiots" is not so much about their actual decisions but more about their mannerisms. It's comparable to one of these MS Paint comics where one side is calm and reasonable while the other side seems insecure, yells often, is corrected by their subordinates, etc. In terms of actual decisions being made, the viewer can't really estimate whether one side is right or the other, only in hindsight by the people with the idiotic mannerisms being proven wrong the viewer is given the impression "man, these guys truly are retards".

This serves the purpose of having the main characters stick out and establishing them as great guys.

If they tried to do this in a more subtle manner, chances are it would get lost on the audience. Also, it would require an enormous effort to be put into the actual details of warfare, which simply one cannot expect from entertainment media. While nice in theory, I'd like to see someone do it in practice first before holding it against LOGH. Lastly, this simply isn't what LOGH is about. LOGH looks at warfare from a Clausewitzian perspective, with warfare being subject to the primacy of politics and being a device to achieve political goals. And that's what LOGH is primarily about: politics. Warfare is but one of many devices of it.

Mate good democracy is the hardest government to maintain. Instead of one monarch being properly educated and moralized, you now need to educate and moralize an entire citizenry properly. And as Yang said, Once a democracy has started down the path of decay its nearly impossible to bring it back up again via democratic means, because the government comes from the very people who fall into apathy.

woah there body, I'm judging the show against itself. its clearly stated that in a situation of 10-1 odds, there really isn't much an admiral can do; however, Yang comes in and just miraculously wins every situation. it becomes almost boring watching him.
>>
>>120987482
*buddy
fuck english
>>
>>120987482
He doesn't usually win though, he just slips away, which is miraculous in itself. There are very few battles where Yang annihilates an Imperial force.
>>
>>120987482
History is filled with characters who won battles against all odds.

Also >>120987564; Yang mostly achieves tactical victories. Coordinated retreats with minimal losses, etc. - the war takes place at a larger scale though. Rarely is Yang in the position to actually affect the outcome.
>>
>>120987482
That's the point of Yang. He can win every battle, but does his position improve at all? Really it just seems to get worse and worse. Like >>120987687 said, he wins tactically, but very rarely strategically. Reinhard on the other hand is racking up strategic victories.
>>
>>120987855

OK LOGH is one of those shows I feel nagged into watching but never want to watch because its like 100+ episodes.

But according to this thread all the characters are flat, and the battle strategies are just lame anyway. I'm assuming there's no romance (not that romance works with flat characters).

Whats the appeal of LoGH again?
