I think anime fucked me up. this "hang out with a girl as you gradually raise your romance points until you can confess dramatically" or "approach random girl and confess your love" doesn't work at all in america. it's an actual cultural thing in Japan, but nobody over here is used to it, so it will ALWAYS come off as creepy and weird.

I don't even know how you're supposed to ask a girl out, maybe I would if I had watched western media instead of getting all my cultural information from Japan.

OP here. so i had a look at the translation for 'confession' in japanese. seems more associated with expression/declaration, whereas its connotations in the west are guilt/religion/crime.

Man, I don't even know what to say. Moonbaby here, and this is definitely not par for the course. It probably happens more than here because of the way anime has built up the idea of kouhaku, but this is not everyone's reality by any means.

Some of the other stuff happens, though, like getting set up by your friends, particularly where everyone goes out together then conspires to leave you two alone for a bit. And sometimes you get asked out by note/letter, but that's kind of lame and immature, I think.

It's a Japanese take on a western tradition of men asking women out. And anime has a whole bunch of cliches and conventions about how it is done.

You guys don't understand. The confession is different than simply saying "I like you, let's go out on dates," it's basically saying "I love you and want to form a serious relationship with you".

Japanese people aren't robots, they flirt and hang out with girls all the time. They have playboys and sluts too, who flit from guy to guy or girl to girl without any attachments.

The confession is something that signifies a desire for a serious committed relationship. It's very embarrassing for a young person because of the gravity of it. It's basically the next thing down from asking a girl to marry you.

I went to South-East Asia this one time.
