Have you played the game? It has no plot, everything is magic and doesn't get explained at all, for all we know Kisaragi could show up again... maybe. They're not following the historical "plot" but some ships are expected to sink given that the Teitoku is the only teitoku of this world and shit happens. It's a character driven show, not a plot driven show, just enjoy the wacky ride, let's not pretend Kancolle is some sort of masterpiece, don't lie to yourself thinking this whole thing had a plot prepared, those who picked the game didn't do it thinking "wow this thing has some serious plot", the game doesn't have anything besides collecting your favorite girls and submitting yourself to the wonders of RNG, c'mon, we're all here expecting to see how much screen time our favorite ship gets and that's all.

Do you even grief, anon? Deaths are always "pointless", especially war deaths. Kisaragi lives on in the hearts of her friends, and that's all there really is to it. Mutsuki and Fubuki learned something about loss and dealing with it, and had a good cry in the sunset.

Look, I can understand if Kisaragi was your shipfu and you're mad she got fridged, or if you're mad that they're not recreating World War 2, or even if you're mad that the show is as much an insane juxtaposition of absurd antics with grim war drama, and is as such disrespectful of history (which is a valid argument), but "pointless" is absolutely the wrong complaint to level at Kisaragi's passing, at least at this point.

If by the end of it all then it looks like Mutsuki has learned or gained nothing from her sister's death, or if there's been no other plot or character-related development, then yeah, you can call it cheap and underutilized. But not right now.

Because the beach scene (it wasn't even a whole episode, you know) was pointless but still within the boundary of the main plot, while the Kancolle anime doesn't even have such thing as a main plot. The staff is absolutely lost and have no idea of what they're doing. This is why they complain; it's not about beach, onsen, or etc

See, nerds like to use that word a lot when they actually mean it's not what they expected. That's not inconsistent direction, that's an episode that didn't go the way you wanted it to. There's a difference.

Kancolle's tone "inconsistency" is baked into the nature of the fucking product. Frankly it would be MORE inconsistent direction if the entire episode had dropped the whole base into mourning and crying over Kisaragi's loss. At that point the first 2-1/2 eps would be revealed as a bait-and-switch by using a SoL tone to shift to a grimdark war story.

Antics juxtaposed with another character in mourning? That's not inconsistent. Do you cry and stop your life when a student at your school or a coworker who might at best be a distant acquaintance dies? Of course not. You shake your head, say some condolences, and move on.

Chances are the Kongous and Shimakaze didn't know Kisaragi that well either. Plus, they're pretty self-absorbed, so maybe they were being rude.

The characters to whom Kisaragi mattered most - Fubuki and Mutsuki, remained in mourning and continued to be affected by her death long after the fact. Fubuki had to participate in the antics because she was being dragged along, but the entire way through you can she's not entirely into it, and during the episode her brush with death just drives Kisaragi's absence home harder, so instead of trying to convince Mutsuki that Kisaragi's gone they just share a hug and cry together.

Kancolle's no masterpiece, but you jerks aren't giving it enough credit. Aside from episode 3, which didn't have enough antics to balance out the drama, the show has been consistent where it counts.
