However you may be right on the "entry level anime" thing, many who like it watched it young and without much experience

Mostly nostalgia.

Remember that this came out in 2004, and internet based fansubbing was still a pretty new thing back then. I think for a lot of people this was the first "edgy" anime they saw, and so it left a big impression even though it wasn't really that good.

Yes, because those were actually good shows. Elfen lied wasn't a good show, but it had plenty of shock appeal and it came at a time when a lot of people were just getting into anime. Because of that lots of people remember it a lot more fondly than they should.

I self don't bother watching it after found out that it contain gore and edgy stuff (Because I was expected it to be more lighthearted).

If I want to watch gore I will watch Fist of the North Star instead.

It's a really dumb show, despite how on the mark the OP is.

I actually think the opening is one of the biggest reasons for the success of the show. It makes people expect something artsy. If it weren't for that, maybe people would see the show for the babby's first tits and gore that it actually is.

A better show that's just as edgy is Mnemosyne, and that's actually a decent show.

I liked it back when I was a shitty teen, but I also liked Gaia so younger-me's tastes are shit and should be ignored

I enjoyed it and I still do and I've watched hundreds of anime, I don't mind gore at all, I enjoyed the story overall although I did feel some scenes were out of place, however if it was explored properly it could've been even better, even then it's a 7-7.5/10
