Turn A is great, but I still think 0080 is the best thing the franchise has produced.

Unicorn gave me everything I needed it to give me: proof the OYW was a righteous war, and the Torrington Base fight in episode 4. Really the only thing I could have wanted more of was major character death, especially Riddhe's dumb ass.

When it comes to series with longevity, the more that is created, the more there is to contrast and compare. Turn A has reached the point where it can be analyzed more fairly and it's pros and cons are more apparent today than they were 15 years ago (At least I'm guessing. I only just finished up the Gundam series last year).

Not anime related, but look at Zelda. Whenever a new game is released, people analyze the previously released games in a different light. Not saying there is a full blown cycle like some people think, but there is something to be said about franchises and how entries in them are viewed over time.

Well it seems we have different opinions but I really hated 7.

thinking of getting into Gundam, and obviously i'm gonna start with the original from the late 70's. But do I just keep watching all the later series in order?

Basically i'm asking if any of the series are shit/skippable

You can get away with watching just the trilogy in order honestly. 0079-Z-ZZ(if you want)-CCA

After that there isn't much UC left, Unicorn, F91, Victory,,,

pretty much the side stories you can skip like 0080, MS 08th, 0083 since they are just concurrent with 0079 or before Z with little to no impact on your understanding of Z.

After that, honestly I'd say Victory is the next main one, while important I feel Unicorn and F91 are definitely "in betweens" that don't really affect the plot of Victory since it's so far ahead into the future of UC.
Then there is the currently airing G-Reco which is a sort if lead in to Turn A, which I would suggest you watch after watching the UC stuff, at least up to CCA. But for Turn A, it's good to watch after seeing a few of the series since they all sort of collide at one point, which is Turn A.
All of the AUs like G Gundam, Wing, X etc can be watched in any order of your liking

I liked it a lot too.

I'd rather him not skip anything since the side stories are worth the watch, but they aren't necessary.

The only things with any continuity that matters is like 0079->Zeta->ZZ, then CCA is in a weird spot, but all of them are in continuity with Unicorn. 0080 and 08th MS and IGLOO stand alone. 0083 is between 0079 and Zeta, but you should probably watch both of those first. F91 and Victory technically happen after those, but nothing in those series really matters in those. Everything else is an AU and the timelines within those AUs, like Wing->EW, are pretty obvious.

Maybe you should watch everything else before Turn A and G-Reco, but it isn't a huge deal.
