Anime will never be mainstream nor will it ever be.

Normalfags want it to be which is why they push for shit like SnK or your monthly new mature anime for mature people like myself. They want to make other people see the medium for more than what it is.

The problem is that cartoons in the west are seen in two ways.
Cartoons in the west are seen in two ways.
There are cartoons for kids and those for adults.
There can be kids shows with more mature themes and whatnot but they are still considered for kids.
And then you got cartoons for adults which are basically just adult jokes with animation.

Anime is different. It can be considered for teens since it carters to its demographic with tits and ass and is awesome for it.
Normalfags want anime to be accepted which is why they LOVE shit like SnK or your gritty mature anime because those are more likely to be accepted by normalfag society.

However, Japan doesn't make many of those which is why when anime does get seen in the west, they tend to be for kids/teenagers to a degree or another.

This is why shit that aired in toonami was only popular for kids/teens and no one else with only the few dedicated caring about it.
Anime only became a slightly more popular niche, but it remains a niche.

It's in a very weird place right now. I know lots of 16-20 year old kids (guys and girls) who visit Tumblr and the like are "into" anime, but only NGE, Lain, and Sailor Moon. It's much more socially acceptable to say you watch it or like it now. They don't follow it or anything though.

All right I'll tell you the facts.
If you go to a liberal arts college or even an STEM college in NYC or San Francisco you're gonna to get the illusion that anime is mainstream even if it's just SnK and SAO. Guess this applies to high schools in those places as well, and other places similar.

Literally 50% of the rest of the US has no clue what anime is at all. And of the other 50% maybe 9% has actually seen it, and not just heard about it from one of it's appearances on late night shows or south park.

Anime isn't even mainstream in Japan. There a few series enjoyed by normalfags but the people that buy anime are otaku who want tits, ass and moe. Considering it is only normalfags in the west that want every anime to be like SnK or SAO . Anime will never become mainstream because westerners don't buy it so the majority of Anime will be catered to otaku. You have a couple of Anime every decade that are just so good they cater to everyone but that is it.

It's becoming mainstream enough that people, shitty pop culture celebrities in particular, and taking an interest in it on Netflix.

I'll give it about 5 years before it starts to become REALLY mainstream, and about 2 more before it hits maintstream level.

Still, with the internet and late night TV around, manga being sold in book stores and VNs breaking records on steam sales I see it following the same path as video games: people start out thinking it's just a pasttime for kids and nerds until it has been spread so far that everyone but old fucks are watching it.
