Probably because being thin is so ingrained into Japanese culture that they don't even think twice when they make their protagonists thin, just naturally reflecting their culture. Seriously, those fuckers are skinny.

Whereas manga like Hokuto No Ken, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Berserk or even the likes of Kinnikuman reflect western ideals of the powerful lead. All very old, is what they have in common.

Maybe they were pandering the west, maybe they were just reflecting what was considered cool at the time. Nevertheless it clearly isn't the case today.
