>bursts onto the scene with a lot of freshness
>gives us a solid Lupin work and a halfway decent adapted version of a pretty great manga
>follows it up with one of the greatest animated films of all time, Castle in the Sky
>My Neighbor Totoro comes around and is fairly unique for its time, if pretty damn overrated. Would put Ghibli permanently on the map for its popularity with young children.
>Kiki's Delivery Service is a very well told, for lack of a better word, "comfy" story of a girl's sexual awakening and transition into adulthood.
>Porco Rosso is okay, but falters in the second half. The first time we're seeing Miyazaki being overtly political.
>Princess Mononoke combines aspects of Nausicaa and Laputa and, for all its faults in the plot, doesn't take a strict black or white viewpoint. Plus it looks beautiful
>Spirited Away becomes the culmination of Miyazaki's style, combining the wonder of childhood, magic realism, and a grand yet "small" adventure. Deservedly wins a ton of awards.
>his next three movies are all varying degrees of shit
>he becomes increasingly bitter but keeps getting roped back in

What went wrong? Why didn't he retire after Spirited Away?
>>
Japanese work ethic. He'll release another 10 movies and live another 100 years too.

Also, The Wind Rises was pretty great.
>>
Wind Rises was awesome, though the other two kinda weren't

By now it kinda feels like he just keeps making the same movie over and over again.

Every time he gets on talking about his career and the industry, I always feel like he stays on, not just for the money, but because he thinks the medium can be something amazing and he thinks he can help catalyze some change in the zeitgeist, help it get some momentum and lose the stagnation.

Earthsea was fuckawful, sure, but Arietty was cute and exactly what you expected, I've heard good things about Ponyo, and From Up On Poppy Hill was thoroughly enjoyable.

Miyazaki's mainstream. He doesn't get subculture and thus will never understand otaku and the rest of the anime industry. Just because the man knows how to animate does not mean he understands anime culture.

You are someone with no knowledge of anime history otherwise you wouldn't say such retarded shit.

Evangelin, Gundam, the magical girl genre, Ghibli, The Big O, One Piece, and fucking Azumanga were all anime that expanded anime in some way. Anime, like any other industry will die if it doesn't expand. Even the most autistic nerd will eventually get tired of the same shit being recycled for the 10th time.

Part of the problem lies with Otaku. Otaku have become MORE restricted in their taste and less open to new concepts. If Dirty Pair was made today it would be a huge failure in japan because the losers couldn't handle the idea that Yuri and Kei occasionally express sexual interest in men. If Space Adventure Cobra was made today it would fail because the site of a strong, confident main character would make otaku feel resentment. If anything the variety of anime has gotten WORST compared to the past. We still had cute girl shows (there were for instance way more mahou shoujo shows in the past) but we also had other genres in abundance.
The idea that Otaku should not reproduce by making an effort to AVOID SEX WITH REAL PEOPLE was never as wide-spread as before. In other words nerds have stopped reproducing in japan.
>>
>>120086889
I have the Rei one.

Are you for fucking reall?

>the magical girl genre
Sally the Witch you dumb fuck.

So now you bitch how Cobra would fail today, but then say Gundam and NGE expanded the medium, although they pretty much crated the whiny MC

All of the shows you mention always gathered the most support from the otaku crowd, while the normals just bandwagon onto them. If you want a fucking normalfag show then watch Doraeom or Kochikame, which are just bland and uninteresting
>>
>>120087246

Not if we get some imaginative individuals ready to buck the trend, though given this is Japan, where such things are frowned upon, that may be stretching it. But every culture has its radicals, it's geniuses who will not lie down and accept the norm, even Anime producers.

Learn what words means before you start replying. Seriously do this. I'm not going to write a counter point, I'm going to teach you what the "word expands" mean than you should realize why what you typed is an embarrassing worthless mess.

Expand means 'to grow' it doesn't mean it's fucking good. One piece expanded anime, this is completely undeniably it was a huge success and was incredibly popular in japan among people that normally didn't watch anime. Big O also expanded anime but not as greatly, it brought a ton of western fans, westerners liked it so much cartoon network GAVE JAPAN ANIME TO MAKE A SECOND SEASON. If literally giving japan money isn't helping the industry than what is?

This is how industries survive! They get people to consume their product. This is what it means to 'expand'
>>
>>120085564

because he can make good anime and never ever pander /a/, and he really thinks people who post here are the real cancer of anime
>>
>>120087569
Haven't you ever heard the term "Herbivore Male" thrown around in anime? Granted it's not used as often as it should be because it might hit too close to home for some of the audience, but it is a legit phenomenon of some significant number.

But hell, that joke about Japan spending more on adult diapers than baby diapers isn't for nothing.
>>
>>120087569
It's not the norm. Not here, nor Japan. But it is enough a thing that you can't just shrug it off as outliers.
>>
>>120087569
the "outliers and crazy buggers" ARE the people who support anime.

Normal people are almost insignificant to the anime market.

The industry only gets about 10% of it's money from over seas. The majority of it's cash comes from DVDs (the ones that cost $50 an episode) and merchandise. Both are things only extreme nerds buy.

These are the people that are the life blood of the industry.

It's only a handful of exceptions: pretty cure, doraman, one piece, Ghibli, etc. That make any significant money from normal people. Prime time TV slots on kids channels are limited and highly competitive and theatre movies have to compete with Hollywood for consumer interest.
>>
>>120087807

>>120087760
>Big O also expanded anime but not as greatly, it brought a ton of western fans,
I really can't take you seriously if you think this. A show that got cancelled brought in a ton of western fans?

While being oblivious about DBZ, Gundam Wing and Naruto.

>I'm not going to write a counter point
Of course you aren't because you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Saying anime should expend, then in the same post saying that the old anime wouldn't be a success today, ignoring the fact that the shows that "expanded" anime are the reason it wouldn't be popular today
>>
>>120087971
>Ghibli, etc. That make any significant money from normal people
>they were forced to shut down the studio because of how bad they were doing

Wat?
>>
>>120087971

So anime hasn't assimilated the term 'diversification' have they?

Nothing can stand still, it leads to stasis, decay and decline. Is that the situation Anime is in now? Trapped in amber, unable to grow and shift?
>>
>>120088133

Because 'significant money' from normal people isn't as much as it once was I'd guess. Or pales in comparison to drinking the blood of the crazy shutin Otaku.

>demanding anime be westernised
Nobody's saying that. It just so happened that Big O turned out that way. Stop jumping to conclusions.
>>
>>120088562
I heard they actually had plans for another season with an actual conclusion.
>>
>>120088133
Hence why the industry is dying.
It's limited ways to non-otaku dollar is drying up.

The otaku dollar is shrinking because the nerds literally refuse to reproduce. The fact that Otaku demand that the characters act un-human, and thus only be accessable to otakus familiar with archetypes like tsundere imoutos.

Anime isn't really a nerd thing anymore. It's not about high fantasy adventures, space battles, or heroes fighting some cool monster. It's about watching girls eating food with sparkles super-imposed on them. That's not even an exaggeration, its the synopsis of something airing this season!
>>
>>120088707

The world is always falling apart. That's what every generation tells themselves. We in Generation Y are no different.
>>
>>120087186
It's not that they are trying to wipe themselves off the map.
They just aren't trying at all. They are single and don't have any plans to breed.
>>
>>120088730

Anime is a chance to show that the west doesn't have a monopoly in everything. I love Anime as a counterpoint to what we see cranked out from Disney, Warner Brothers and the like, a chance for another culture to make a mark on the world that previously only the West could do.

The world would be a poorer place without Anime.
>>
>>120088469
>They pioneered so many things
Decades ago. They're staying afloat on the successes of the past. Whether they can pioneer new things to keep going from now on is the key here.
>>
>>120088795

Not trying at all is worse then trying and failing.

Never thought I'd see /a/ get this philosophical on the fate of Anime and the world. It's refreshing in a way.
>>
>>120083267
>to do a what is essentially a war documentary.

It's not even that, it's a biography of a man's life (well, 3 men actually combined into a single character). He did it probably because he loves planes.
>>
>>120088755
But I like Kafouku no Graffiti
>>
>>120088895

He should have done one on Willy Messerschmidt, or Ernst Heinkel and the Jet Engine, or the Horten Brothers and their flying wing.
>>

Nah, the ending was just too deep for you. Enemy of the week crap like AZ is perfect for you.

world population has never been greater. the world's falling apart but we're still managing to outpace death rates.

But did they see their creations get turned into weapons?
>>
>>120088961

I think he chose the man he did because there are still a lot of people in Asia (korea and china in particular) that still hate the man for creating the machine hd did, when at the end of the day he merely wanted to make airplanes. The fact that the Zero doesn't really show up until the end of the movie shows how the movie doesn't want to focus on it and its impact.
>>
>>120089134

Most aeroplane designers of the time did that. Like Barnes Wallis. He built the R101, Britain's last Zeppelin, and he ended up making the Bouncing Bomb for the Dambusters.
>>
He bitches about the anime industry non stop when his movies are all essentially the same fucking shit, in the same artstyle, with the same themes. He hasn't done anything especially new or creative to expand the medium.

He also acts as if otaku are everything wrong with industry when in reality the entire country has been having serious problems both socially and economically since the end of WWII and the era of globalization. Otaku aren't the problem, they're the result. Them leaving their rooms wouldn't magically fix the recession or the anime industry all the underlying problems are still there.
>>
Miyazaki is the Japanese Kubrick. Discuss.
>>
>>120089148
Also more importantly, Miyazaki's father I believe worked for Mitsubishi and helped construct those planes.
>>
>>120089289
I wish I knew what that meant. I'm no film snuff.
>>
>>120089289
Miyazaki has more emphasis in emotion
Kubrick is in a whole different level. His stuff is more surreal.
>>
>>120089396
>he doesn't know kubrick
>>
>>120087109
>The idea that Otaku should not reproduce by making an effort to AVOID SEX WITH REAL PEOPLE was never as wide-spread as before. In other words nerds have stopped reproducing in japan.

Yeah. I mean that won't really ever be a problem outside Japan, because everywhere else nerds generally just look for and fuck nerds of the opposite sex, But Japan? Man they've given up.
>>
>>120089396

Kubrick was an auteur and made some of the greatest films ever (Dr Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, 2001), but horrible to work with, a perfectionist and Primadonna who demanded all of those he worked with.
>>
>>120079836
>one time an old man couldnt adapt to a modern-day where people dont actually like story telling and prefer having every thing force-fed to them
>one time an old man couldnt figure out that simpletons dont like multi-faceted individuals and will not be able to handle it if he were to make children's stories, mature stories, and political stories, sometimes simultaneously

The only thing that is wrong is that Miyazaki didn't see society turning into a bunch of vapid, dull shitheads because of the internet.
>>
>>120088053
Your a dumbass

Seriously, though, how d'you reason that the West paying for a second season of it doesn't mean it had a load of Western fans? D'you think loads of people gave them money for no reason? Or are you just ignoring the point in the hope it goes away?
>>
>>120089289
I think he's more of a Spielberg.
>>
>>120088053
>A show that got cancelled brought in a ton of western fans?

It didn't get cancelled because of a lack of fans, it had plenty.

it got cancelled because Adult Swim didn't like forking over a million per episode to make the second season, so they decided not to fund a third.

> Along with the 13 episodes of season two, Cartoon Network had an option for 26 additional episodes to be written by Konaka,[11] but according to Jason DeMarco, executive producer for season two, the middling ratings and DVD sales in the United States and Japan made any further episodes impossible to be produced.[12]

It was actually going to be 52 episodes, but it got cancelled TWICE because the sales were shit domestically and internationally

So no 26, is not the real ending, it's tomato garbage

This reminds me of how either Anno or Miyazaki was talking about how the people working in the anime industry are only interested in anime, and what this has resulted in is a shrinking, incestuous frame of reference.

I see too many threads where you see people typing "Is this this season's X?" or "It's like (show from 2004) but with Y!"

It'd be neat to see anime tackle western fare and apply some Japanese sentiments. I mean, Lupin III and Golgo 13 are basically that and those are pretty successful. Madoka got a lot of mileage with the Faust parallels.

So it might be worth a shot. Shit, even Milky Holmes has some loosely adopted detective literature in its genes.

It wasn't subtle in the slightest about its political leanings though.

In fairness, even the most retarded person today wouldn't think Mussolini's Italy was in any way good. It's not hard to take a stance against it.

No accounting for shitty taste, but his movies are still great.

Never made it past episode 8. But no really, what exactly is stopping you from fulfilling your artistic vision? Unless you want to do something retarded like have uncensored vaginas and snuff porn air in the middle of the day.

Contrary to what /v/ believes not everything in a given season is just SOL and harem.

Remember when you were in grade school and everyone called you a pussy faggot and beat you up?

That was because anime was stigmatized. It still is, but now that stigma has started to effect the greater Japanese population. Anime is becoming more and more niche in it's homeland.
