But the point if they all start the same way. When the enemy knows this they have no idea what attack he's going to pull off, how they should defend. It's hard to read.

Killua even said this when he used paper on Knuckle, where it was effective. Also when he used scissors on the ant, he couldn't tell.


It works because at first you'll be surprised because it starts the same but different move, then you'll still be guessing which one he's going to pull

Oh I get it, when it's all flashy big moves that get repeated all the time people will complain.

But when it's actually a move set that makes sense, has practical uses in combat it's not flashy or cool enough.

The thing is, the chapters that took place in under <20 seconds could be read in a minute, so when you read ten chapters and less than a minute passes in-universe it's not a huge problem. When you watch a 23 minute episode that tries to adapt the same amount of material, it just feels a lot slower, even if the same stuff is happening.

Err, Chimera Ants' pacing was actually pretty smooth - neither too fast nor too slow, covering over a hundred chapters in 60 episodes. Most pacing issues in the anime were fixed by the beginning of the Greed Island arc.

I think that fits Gon's personality well, which is reflected by the story's in-world Enhancer archetype, so personally I don't mind it. Especially since Gon actually employs some neat tactics to diversify his otherwise one-dimensional attacks.

I really liked the slow narration for the raid and the build up.

It is never explicitly stated. My best guess is that it is conjuration. IIRC, the little shit never leaves the target's side, even though it only works when Knuckle is near by. That sounds like conjuration, I think Kurapika's master said something about conjured objects not disappearing even if the conjurer is not around.

And the pacing is weird because way too many characters get introduced and they all are the center of attention for a while. Not to mention that halfway through the arc has training as its main focus. Honestly, there are quite a few things that rubbed me the wrong way with this arc, but overall it is amazing. It is only topped by the York New Arc. Even still the best fight in the series happens in CA and they've got the best main villain to date. I think Chrollo has the potential to be a better villain then Meruem, but right now the king is at the top.

In the anime, the narrator were FUCKING annoying - especially when it goes bound and beyond explaining shit in the Chimera arc

I understand some of the more technical stuff needs explanation for people who havent read the manga, - for example when Netero and Killua's grandfather invaded the palace and we have an entire episode that spans literally 10 seconds with so much going on.

However there were also moments where the narrator were not necessary at all and overstepped it bounds. For example when a character is thinking - there is no need for the narrator to say:

"And right now Killua is thinking on whether this would be the last time he'll ever see Gon."

They broke the first rule of visual storytelling, show, don't tell.

Thankfully this were all gone by Election arc and we're back on wacky hijinks again
