The most interesting thing about Ritsuko, and a point that's notably missing from the remakes of Evangelion is one of the best bits of the original series.

While it's a boring episode, the episode about the 3 Magi computer system that runs Nerv is about as realistic or believable as Eva ever gets. The US Military and NASA use very similar computing schemes to improve fault tolerance in mission critical computing. The space shuttle itself literally ran on a system very similar to that in Evangelion, consisting of 3 1980s supercomputers with 64kb of ram with instructions programmed in ADA for even more fault tolerance. One thing they have that NERV didn't (and should have had), NASA was so obsessed with the computers staying up that they built a backup system of computers that did the exact same thing via completely different methods in case all 3 computers went down.

tl;dr Ritsuko is about as real as the science on the show gets, and I appreciate her more as a character the older I get and the more I learn about Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

I'd call him actively annoying in the original Japanese, in English, god forbid you're foolish enough to watch Eva in English, he's completely fucking unbearable and has some of the most cringeworthy writing in the dub.

He's fucking lame though, he exists to provide a strong big brother figure for Shinji, thing is, EVERYONE is a big brother figure for Shinji, so all the various Eva writers tend to kill or maim him to motivate Shinji to adopt some of his personality traits and characteristic drive.

He's completely unnecessary. His role is better served by other older male characters in the show who have more development.

Gainax later expanded this type of character into Kamina and got it right, but Toji is one of the cheapest "big bro" archetypes in anime. Bar none.
