What is /a/'s opinion on "Tale of Princess Kaguya."

Fun Fact: It took 8 yrs to produce this.

>8 yrs
Can tell already it's shit.
>>
Because the director was a lazy shit.
>>
>>119938910

The art style sucks and Kaguya is too indecisive, even for a woman.

Also the story sucked, but I guess that's a complaint to take up with ancient Japanese writers rather than modern ones.
>>
It outsold Miyazaki's war movie ten times over from what I understand.
It's rather funny to watch the documentary where both he and his adjutant are bitching about Takahata or going on about how the movie has to be anti-war because of the nationalist sentiment in Japan growing stronger. Incredibly obvious that their political sentiments screwed them over in hindsight.

>Fun Fact: It took 8 yrs to produce this.
But was it 8 years hand drawn?
>>
I like ZUN's version better.
>>
A fuck ton better than that other movie that was in development for 6+ years, Letter to Momo.
>>
Haven't seen it. Looks a little to artsy even for a Ghibli film.

I'll watch it eventually.

this looks nothing like Naruto

you really aren't into takahata

was waiting for this post
>>
I loved it. In hindsight, I'd say it was one of my favorite films I saw in all of last year.
>>
Boringly average.
>>
It was shit. Completely butchered the legend and made it worse.
>>
Would have seen it if it was in any theaters around me.

Likely to get Shafted this year for awards. Wind Rises got BTFO by Frozen last year and even then the Oscar judges admitted half of them only saw Frozen.
>>
If Oscars were awarded on merit, it would win unquestionably. It's really good.
>>
>>119938910
The Thief and the Cobbler took 28 years to make.
>>
If a movie, especially an animated one, takes more than a year or two to make, then it's an idiotic decision to allow it to be made.
>>
>>119940832
Why?
>>
>>119940906
Anime is a commercial medium, using up all that time for the sake of "art" is a waste when it won't be anything special anyway.
>>
it was amazing-ly long
>>
>>119940934
>Anime is a commercial medium
Stopped reading there
>>
>>119940934
You're stupid.
>>
>>119940832
Maybe it's done with a small team of animators, or part of the time is only the directos revisionong or storyboarding.
>>
>>119940599
More like completely fixed the problems with the folktale and made it work as story
>>
>>119940934
>for the sake of "art"
How did you come to this conclusion? Purely for entertainment, commercial projects also get delays and go through production hoops, you know. Once you're in, it's hard to dial back, especially if you already have a full team committed.

That said, this film is art and special and you probably don't understand why because you're an utter pleb.

This, and her challenges are still more reasonable than the other Kaguya's.

>>119938910
Was this any good?
On my backlog for quite some time.

People are butthurt it isn't another Nostalgic, Miyazaki Movie.

These
>>
>>119941341
It's very good.
>>
>>119941363
People? Maybe. /a? Definitely not. As far as most of /a/ is concerned Miyazaki is a senile old man who needs to die already.
>>
>>119940906
This kills the studio (Ghibli has already fired all their animators).
>>
>>119941473
That was not Kaguya, everyone knew Kaguya would bomb even before starting production

It was the fact that Marnie, the film made by the "succesor" director at Ghibli, bombed. Showing that there isn't any interest in anything not made by Miyazaki. Since Miyazaki retired, they just didn't give a new project to any new young guy at Ghibli and shut down their animation department since they won't be producing anything for a while.
>>
>>119941644
Wait, so bombing is okay if they knew ahead of time? That makes no sense. Billions were still lost. Bombing twice in a row is what did it. How can you assign blame between the two?
>>
>>119940832
>>119940934
Only when you planned to profit from it.
>>
>>119941747
Takahata is an elder at the studio. He's Miyazaki's mentor and a co-founder of Ghibli. Of course they'll let him make the movie he wants regardless of commercial implications.

Even then though, in the 80s and 90s he made much more movies. He made a film in '91, in '94, and in '99, and then didn't do anything for 15 years. People speculate that there was some apprehension after his '99 Yamadas bombed super hard, but it could also just be the guy getting old and his already slow approach to production getting even slower.

Kaguya was likely Takahata's last film and that was what they had the money for, anyway. Marnie was the true test to see if the Ghibli model of feature films could keep going with new directors (i.e. without Miyazaki). Since it failed, they decided not to embark on any new project for the time being (which doesn't mean they "closed the studio", they just released the animators since there will be nothing to animate for probably more than a year or two).
>>
>>119941473
While Kaguyahime's extended production period might have contributed to the decision to put the animation department on freeze, it really has more to do with Miyazaki's retirement and the failure of When Marnie Was There.

>The Wind Rises
>The film grossed ¥11.6 billion (US$113 million)[39] at the Japanese box office, becoming the highest grossing film in Japan in 2013.
>The Tale of Princess Kaguya
>By January 5, 2014, the film had grossed ¥2,014,535,721 (US$19,345,586) at the Japanese box office.[19] By January 19, it had grossed ¥2.21 billion (US$21.19 million).[20] By February 2, the film had grossed ¥2,313,602,733 (US$22,613,153) at the Japanese box office.
It was a flop.
>>
I'm glad almost no one on /a/ likes poorly drawn crap like this.
>>
>>119945890
The only people who do are crossboarders who don't actually like anime.
>>
>>119940934
you're fucking stupid.
I think you really need to know first how conventional animation is made before spewing any commercial value related comment.
>>
It's good and worthwhile.
