No the problem was the Taisha could not imagine ever being able to let the girls off duty to heal.
With vertexes coming through the barrier apparently whenever they wanted, they always needed girls on duty, and they failed to figure out a rotation system that would allow the 100 odd hero candidates to take turns and minimize the damage.
But the biggest reason was that in order to power up, Shinju needed to have a major battle fought within the barrier so he could eat the remains. A battle that could still easily be lost, a battle that even if won could result in epic damage and casualties depending on how long it lasted and the damage done to the forest. The Taisha were so adverse to the risk that they refused to cooperate and suppressed information going between the Hero's and Shinju, to try to prevent the Hero's from coming to this conclusion on their own.
The result was their own bad treatment to the Hero's and starving Shinju.
However the Taisha were humans meddling in the affairs of gods and the Gods will eventually found a way through Sonoko, Togo, and Yuuna.

I wrote the Gods in plural in that although I consider Shinju to be a single entity now, but the fight is still between Shinju and the Celestial Gods/Gods of Heaven/however you want to translate that kanji- which means Amatarasu and her friends essentially. AFIK the gods on that side have not found it necessary to merge themselves in a similar fashion to Shinju so its still "affairs of gods" even if there is only one on the humans side.

It's hard to understand why YuYuYu got popular and why it got such number in its sales.

Nico ratings are kinda hard to take account of with a show like this since it has a militant anti and a small fanbase in Japan.

Episode 5 already had set an upward trend, enough to go past Manabi. It probably would be around the 5k line if it didn't have the episode 9 boost.
Episode 9 did start the boom, but the finale barely had a hit on it.

Seriously, this show is one of those that will probably get some profiling research from other studios and producers since everyone has been tried to point out who is buying it and why are they doing it.

Because YYY spend pretty much half the season build up the clues here and there inside the healing SoL part, then exploded the plot by revealing these clues.
A great contrast between healing and suffering made audience get into the show, while make the plot setting interesting and not too "complex"(very important). It's all about the surprise.

What I personally liked:

The show builds an emotional bond between viewer and characters.

The setting is built out of several layers, it doesn't just materialize on the spot to fit with where the plot/show wants to go, exactly the moment it has to.

Of course a show doesn't have to do these things, as seen with Madoka. I enjoyed that quite a bit as well. But mostly because I enjoyed 1 specific character's development, out of the rooster, not all of em.

Also the visuals and music are well matched and generally the production quality is just there.

I'd be disappointed if it didn't explain anything and didn't leave enough to make concrete speculation on what happened. But that's not the case.
