I'm pretty sure that's what the last thousands of posts have been about in the threads.

It's pretty much up to you. Was she saying that she cheated just to make her husband feel validated? Was she actually Matchy who had an affair? Maybe that meeting in the restaurant was an arranged marriage meeting and there was really someone else she loved.

The whole point is that it's open ended.

>>
>>119606107
Yes
Reincarnation is shit, you don't retain your last life individuality (or they both should have had memories of past lives after they died, unless it's the first life they ever had).
The void in my opinion is more the type of place where you retain individuslity but you are alone forever (the same as being on 4chan).

This is what actually happened:

There's no heaven and hell in Buddhism, there's nirvana and reincarnation. In Christianity, you go to heaven for doing good things and to hell for doing bad things. In Buddhism, you reach nirvana by getting rid of your desires and reincarnate if you weren't able to do that.
You shouldn't compare them because the point of these concepts is completely different.
>>
>>119609898
An unborn soul can not be judged since there is not yet anything to judge.
There is no reason for it to come to the bar or anything.
>>
>>119609981
Since Takashi was filled with anger and Machiko was at peace (she was obviously lying about her cheating) does this means he went for reincarnation and Machiko is in the Void?

Lolibraid uses "kuu" for the Void here, right? Can't really into moon, but I think that's also synonymous with Heaven/Sky as well for the Japanese.

Japanese culture is probably a lot more relevant to the show than all the Hindu and Buddhist symbolism.

Although I believe she cheated on him because he was being cold towards her, I'm not sure when it happened. She had her ring in the flashback so it was obviously after the wedding. If it was because he was being cold towards her that would imply some time must was passed between marriage and cheating if she really did love him. Then we have pregnancy which happened before the marriage (if we follow the flashbacks).

So if wife is to be trusted 10 weeks passed between pregnancy start and their "honeymoon" death trip, during which they married, he was cold to her and she cheated on him because of it.

How plausible is that? Am I missing something?

She got pregnant, she married, she go in honeymoon (10 weeks baby). If she really cheated at that time it makes her a horrible woman.

Reposting.

The elevators were at first referred to as Heaven (天国) or Hell (地獄). These are specifically Heaven and Hell as everyone knows them. Although in Shinto, only the gods live in Heaven, EVERYONE else goes to Hell. Like in Dragon Ball Z. Technically you go to Hell but there's a nice part of Hell where Goku goes and the really shitty part of Hell where Freiza lives. Also it's the same as Greek Mythology where the underworld has the Fields of Asphodel.

I'm guessing they're using the Christian versions for this show (these words in Japanese are also used to refer to Christian heaven or hell). So Heaven=good and Hell=bad

Later Decim refers to them as Reincarnation (転生) and Void (虚無). Reincarnation is reincarnation as anyone knows it, but Void isn't the one that Buddhism uses, Buddhism refers to the Void as Kuu (空). This Void (虚無) specifically refers to literal nothingness. Like pre Big Bang nothingness. It's also used to refer to Nihilism which is the belief that life is meaningless in a bad way. Buddhism often does get mixed up with Nihilism but it really isn't the same thing. And I really don't want to get into this part so lets just skip it.

So what ultimately happened to Michiko, like everything, is ambiguous. We need to wait for the show to explain what the Void is. The Void is probably if anything, a special anime only thing. Like the thing behind the bar could be the Void for all we know, it was pretty spooky.

I honestly thought this was Takeshi looking through her phone.
And that she was upset because she knew he didn't trust her at that point.
Her being able to say that "there was someone else I loved" was just her way of saying that she loved who she thought Takeshi was.
Which was the reason why she able to ascend while he had to suffer again and reincarnate, especially after seeing his true colors.

Hell does exist in Buddhism. The world of Buddhism consists of multiple realm, and Hell is some sort of in-between place where you go to after passing on, gets judged and punished for your wrong-doings, then gets sent back to the cycle. The place that you get yourself landed into is based on the accumulation of the bad and good things you've done in all of your past lives. The exception to this is of course the Nirvana where you are accepted into due to enlightenment, and this of course also takes account the selves in all previous reincarnation.
In the case of the bitch in this episode, she should have been a fucking saint in the life before for her to get off this easy with cheating and lying to her husband till the very end. If she was actually enlightened enough to go to the void, she would have to tell him the truth of everything.

Conclusions:
>You leave the bar on the same elevator you got in, that is, the masks change, not the elevator you take
>The mask on the elevator you took to get into the bar means nothing
>Human mask means rebirth
>Demon mask means void
>Victorious either chooses if he reincarnates or not, or goes straight to the void (something along the lines of "only those who have no more regrets in life win, so they don't reincarnate")
>>
>>119612874
Nothingness is a 'good end' because it means you don't have to suffer and want and doubt anymore - granted it means there's no joy or happiness or satisfaction either, but if there's nothing that's not going to bother you at all (especially since there's no you either).

Reincarnation is clearly the worse option - sure life comes with it's pleasures, but just being alive means you're constantly struggling to stay in the state of being alive, with constant risk of pain and suffering, and it's guaranteed that you will experience death.

To everyone trying to tie this into actual Buddhism, Shinto, and whatever else - what kind of dingus would write an anime with such blatant limitations? Don't expect this show to have anything beyond real-world-inspired metaphors. It's entertainment and everybody knows it.

Also:
>Death Parade seems to take couples who die at the same time, Billiards doesn't follow this rule
>Young Man won billiards, but probably got reincarnated, as seen by the mask, and Michiko, who also won, went to the void, so it's not a matter of who wins or not, but about his life
>Cheating has nothing to do with it, since the Young Man cheated on his girlfriend, but wanted to atone, while the Old Man had already come in terms with his life, with no regrets
>Michiko seems to have already understood her demise, so that's why she went to the void, whereas Takashi wanted to live more, full of regrets
>the things behind are all dolls
This is what I think at least.

The girl who couldn't even remember her own name was taken by that girl Nona to Quiendecim, and was informed that she would help her with Nona's work. While watching over the two guests that game to Quindecim, the black hair girl asked Nona the reason behind Quindecim's existence. According to Nona, the game was essential to the "arbitration"...

So next episode we get to find out everything about Quindecim through the girls of the black hair girl who we still don't actually know the name of. Which will ever answer most of our questions or give us even more questions.

Forgot to mention that the game is also predetermined, not random as the roulette implies. And Ginko is a pretty cool guy.
Also, there is another possibility, that the masks and elevators mean fucking nothing, since the lady who works there departed with the old man and the young one and still didn't know which one went to which.

Because if it was her, she'd just lie.
The problem was that he took an out-of-context comment he overheard from one of her friends over the years of loving relationship they shared, as though one was more authentic than the other.

When that's all it takes to shatter your trust in someone completely, you must never have trusted them much to begin with.

If he would ask who Matchy was out of the blue she'd have no reason to lie. She wouldn't know why he's asking as it could be for anything and it's unlikely to think that she'd have a prepared excuse either way.

If he asks very innocently she would tell him who she was and everything would be peachy between them.

Yet she found time to cheat on him.
>>
>>119617360
Deleted this post because now Im fairly confident that Im wrong after remembering this >>119617251.

Overall my theory remains similar though. The difference being that Machy wasn't her but really the girl she was talking about.
However with the suspicions he nurtured toward her, her husband started turning into a different man, not the man she married to.

So she ended up cheating like her slut friends, hoping that she would find love again, wich was still painful for her since in the end it was just betraying her husband for sex.
The baby is his, but the person she was mailing to was probably a lover. Basically, by the time they were in that car, their relationship was already over.

She went on her tirade both because of her guilt and to pay him back since in the end she really cheated on him, but also because he never truly trusted and loved her to begin with, wich is why their relation fell apart in the first place and realising that made her snap.

It could be argued that she was talking about herself and only used the existing friend to cover it up, she was pretty expressionless during the talk, which is something lying people often do.

Also, I don't think she thought anything was wrong with her marriage, she was pretty surprised when he stated his suspicions.

They never needed to hurt anyone, that was the whole point. hey even outright say it, they were never told that they had to throw at the opposite's dart board. They could have swapped places and only hurt themselves, they could have chucked every shot to miss completely and not even aimed at the board at all. Hell, they could even just aim at low scoring peripherals and scrape by without any intense pain or discomfort.

The pain they inflicted, they chose to inflict. That was the point. The guy aimed for his pregnant wife's abdomen on purpose. They weren't driven into a corner and forced to do terrible things, they were just given the tools and told they could go nuts.
>>
>>119617976
He was talking about what he heard during the ceremony, wich would indeed suprise her if she cheated after the wedding since she wouldn't expect him to bring up the wedding.
And she wasn't aware of the suspicions anyway, it's just that because of those her husband started acting differently. Wich is what caused the actual cheating.

When he brings up the nickname, she's indeed surprised if Machy isn't her. Because she just realised the root of his suspicions (wich are clear now since he already blamed her) and that he had no trust in her all along.

And she isn't expression less when she talks about Machida, she actually start reminiscing her friend, and then talking with a determined face, not an expressionless one.

They only evidence we have to actually substantiate the cheating is a single contextless shot of her lying in bed next to a man that looks like her husband with messy hair, and it seems out of place with the rest of the story.

It's not surprising that people would be questioning whether we're supposed to take that flashback at face value or not, especially considering nothing else in the episode can be taken at face value.

>>
>>119618639
Not really, if he didn't believe it was possible or didn't have other evidence adding up he wouldn't have believed it. She had been cheating for a while since before they were married it seems. Which is why the cheating occurs after the marriage and the phone calls as well, she was in a relationship with someone else.
>>
They died on the honeymoon and he learned of the cheating during the wedding. All of this talk of how the man acting cold drove her to cheat is fucking retarded unless they had a delayed honeymoon which most normal people dont. The guy had like a day or two to cold shoulder her into cheating.

She wasnt drove to cheat. She did it because she could and wanted that doctor cash.

Also ENGAGEMENT rings are not wedding rings. You wear them before the ceremony too. Its like your all 12 or somethin put some thought into your discussions.
>>
The only thing that really bothers me in this story is that she left the phone ringing while they were driving.

No, the person talked about was his wife. After winning the game she got overconfident and spilled the beans. She had no friend who also married a doctor. >he learned of the cheating during the wedding.
Except he didn't. The Matchy bit was a red herring. The conversation he overheard actually had nothing to do with his wife, and he simply took it out of context and misconstrued it to mean that his wife had been an adulterous gold digger all along.

She was cheating on him, but the evidence he used to reach that conclusion was entirely unrelated to her actual affair. The premise and conclusion were unrelated, the fact that she actually was cheating on him was entirely coincidental to the evidence he used to conclude that.

The fact of what he heard being true or not doesnt matter as he said he didnt want to stop the wedding right then and there. If he knew or suspected it before he would have canceled it beforehand. So he had no suspicions untill then which still shows that he couldnt have cold shouldered her into cheating.

And being cold shouldered isnt a free pass to cheat anyway. The cheaters are the ones in the wrong.

She only won because of the husband. She was trying to throw the last dart away from the board, down the hallway, which would've made he husband win. It was him yanking at her shirt that threw her off and caused the dart to hit the board.
>>
Fuck yeah, I got it!

If friends' conversation in toilet was indeed about Machiko and not her friend Machida, connecting that with Machiko's story about her friend (but actually about herself) not being able to break-up with her boyfriend explains her being depressed in the flashback and how she manage to sleep with the guy in such a short time after getting married.

Did you really think this was a genuine flashback? Did you miss the bartender's eyes going wide with surprise as she tells her lie? Or her thinking about her husband before it? Or the fact that she can't even come up with a name or story about this "someone else" she was supposedly sleeping with?

If you honestly think she was having an affair you're seriously oblivious to the cues the episode is giving
>>
Can we AT LEAST all agree that she did love her husband.

Maybe she did cheat on him and maybe she didn't but from the flashback we saw of her before the final dart was thrown it shows that the baby was actually his. It appears the vast majority of what she said at the end was done to intentionally take the blame off of him as she saw how utterly crushed he was about killing his wife and unborn child.

It was the day of the marriage that he heard that. "Marrying" can have both meanings depending on context in English - she became rich by marrying a doctor v.s. she is marrying a doctor to become rich. In common speech, both can be conveyed as "she really got it nice, marrying a doctor". I'm assuming the original Japanese wasn't 結婚した but even if it was, a done deal can be referred to in the past even when it hasn't been completed yet.

>>119620340
behind every good lie is a hint of truth, that's what makes a convincing lie. By saying Machida Yuuki, her husband remembers their conversation and is hooked into the lie. Machida Yuuki is a real person, that's what the ED proves. By building a basis of truth, the lie becomes easier to believe. That's like how people hook you into fake LN spoilers, they say something that really happened then they lie about the next part which sounds believable but is obviously a lie.

Machida Yuuki being teased for having a manly name is a truth and that's why they used a nickname; however, a nickname like that is really common in Japanese. Machiko's nickname would also still be Macchi. I know a girl named Sachiko, they call her Sacchi even though her name is already girly. It's just something girls like to do in Japan.

When Machiko was talking about Machida Yuuki's after that though, she was actually referring to herself in the third person. Because it is way too fucking convenient that Machida Yuuki also had an old boyfriend she couldn't break it up with and married a doctor husband.

Also her card says "Machida Yuuki" meaning her last name didn't change. If a Japanese women is a career women, it is not uncommon for her to keep her last name as a matter of pride, but "Matchy" was called a gold digger so she would eagerly change her name if she had indeed gotten married.

And of course this is not shifting all of the blame onto Machiko for cheating since her husband clearly pushed her into cheating, mostly likely by the fact that he was a doctor, a profession that is notoriously workaholic.

This is the important bit.

Machida was her last name in highschool, after getting married to a doctor, it would have changed as a matter of course.

But as you can clearly see in the shot in the ED, her last name didn't change. Meaning that, while Machida Yuuki was a real person, she never married no doctor

okay wait let me explain myself, I'm not whiteknighting her at all but I'm playing devils advocate, I still think she's a bad person.

But I saw this as sort of like a typical NTR plot where the wife gets put into a situation where she's going to get pounded
>girl has several exes
>marries doctor
>the doctor has ED or never is around to fuck her
>wife calls her ex because she's lonely
>they both get drunk and the ex whips out his "biggerthanmyhusband's" dick
>he plows her until she says dame, mou yada

>eventually breaks off relations with him
like that. If the husband was around to give her the D, this wouldn't have happened. She's still a cunt though okay.

I'm just wondering because the use of that honorific is exceptionally stuffy and formal. If it's something specific to the culture of japanese hosting western-style weddings that the guest are referred to by that honorific, that's one thing.

But if that's not an established cultural standard, then the use of that honorific would imply that "Machida Yuuki-sama" is someone representing a more official presence in the wedding ceremony, and not a normal guest or 'old friend' at all.

In other words, the wife pulling a name from the wedding that she knew her husband wouldn't remember to cover her lie.

The expectation is that they `make it work`, or else they offend the people that set them up. There's no hitting it off, you make a show of being gracious that someone higher than you in the social hierarchy saw fit to offer you assistance. If you don't graciously accept their good will, there are consequences.

You don't turn down 'help' from an authority figure. They were pressured by social circumstance to get together and stay together 'or else'. That's just the way that matchmaking culture works.

game doesn't matter, what they say doesn't matter. its not like heaven/hell doesn't know what they're guilty of. its just a fun game to kill time and teach spirits about human nature

I don't think so. Many people didn't understant if she cheated or not before coming here. The bartender didn't even had the flashbacks to work with. To a bystander the husband was just paranoid.

Considering we only have 5 games listed in the OP, It'll probably be those 5 spread across the cour, with some taking up 2 episodes, and bar SoL in between.

In fact, I doubt they'll actually re-use billiards, so there may only be 4 actual games shown.

It's worth noting that this was the turning point in which he started throwing darts to hurt his wife.

It wasn't when he remembered the cheating and decided to get back at her. He was afraid that losing the game would result in his death, and surreptitiously decided to try and win in the last stretch and sacrifice his wife instead.

This was before remembering the bathroom scene. This was before remembering all the paranoia and mistrust and feelings of betrayal. Even with all that baggage shelved, at the end of the day, if he thought he was going to die he would sooner sacrifice his wife.
>>
>>119623780
The heartshot was the only actually accidental hit of the entire game. She tried to throw the dart away in the opposite direction of the boards, and the husband yanking at her shirt caused her to turn and the dart to hit the heart. It was a metaphor

Deepass symbolism.

I personally believe she was lying to make her husband feel better and give him some redemption. The shot of her staring at her ring right before she goes apeshit I feel is significant because she ended up keeping it instead of throwing the thing at him.
>>
>>119623608
>by admitting her sin she left worldly desires behind while the guy was still clinging to the idea of a happy family
While I think she loved him and cheated once (her husband was so paranoid about her supposed cheating he actually pushed her to find relief in another man's arms, classic self fulfilling prophecy) and I do agree about her leaving worldy desires (by giving up on her husband so he could feel better despite her love for him), her husband wasn't clinging on the idea of a happy family.
He just couldn't deal with the guilt of killing his own child, that's why he'd rather think his wife didn't love him and her child wasn't his. She understood that and gave him what he wanted with her did you think I give a fuck about you act.
>>
>>119624051
>(her husband was so paranoid about her supposed cheating he actually pushed her to find relief in another man's arms, classic self fulfilling prophecy)

This would be fine but it doesn't fit the time-frame.
>>
>>119623992
When you consider they made an outward agreement to each throw their darts away to avoid hurting each other, and that he secretly reconsidered behind her back because he realized she'd be getting the better end of the deal, it makes the whole thing a rather nice metaphor for their relationship.

From the very beginning, he was insecure about their relationship because he thought that she was getting the 'better deal', which is why he was so ready to believe she had been playing him to get at his money

Why not ? In my interpretation, Machida did exist. Also, she could have slept with another man between the wedding and the honeymoon (there's often a lapse of a week or more between the two). Either that or she had her engagement ring on during the flashback.
>>
Machida Yuuki hates her family name since High School
Machida Yuuki is supposedly called Matchy to placate her
Machida Yuuki supposedly marries a doctor
Wedding invite says
Machida Yuuki

Therefore
Machida Yuuki did not marry a doctor
Machida Yuuki does not hate her family name
Machida Yuuki is not Matchy
>>
>>119624301
Explain why Machida didn't change her name.
>>
>>119624246
For the kid, life was about winning
For the old man, life was about playing the game and not caring about the other player.

Getting a chance to play one last game made him realize that. Life was the best game he ever played, and he was happy to have had the chance to play it, regardless of the outcome. Being a vegetable was probably the worst fate you could imagine for a guy like him.

I like to think he was the one who went in for reincarnation, that he requested it because he wanted to play the game again. He probably asked for the kid to be allowed to move in his place, so that he could be the one to go and live again.

That's why his smile was victorious. From the beginning he didn't care about the kid, he cared about himself, and he got the thing he wanted most.

Why did Machiko's friends talk about her husband being a doctor like that's something they didn't know about ? (I heard he's a doctor too) That's something they should already know about as her friend, even more so if they were just attending the ceremony.
Machida hated her name, but what about Machi ? People don't change their ways of calling someone that easily. It makes sense for Machiko and her friends to call her that way. Not to mention she could also have took back her name after her divorce.

There are a couple inconsistencies like the main bartender being able to tell where the people went or the black haired chick being new, so I don't think they exist in the same canon. But they're so similar I also think it's perfectly reasonable to compare them.

Yes, and?
Being invited to a wedding would require that I have friends or acquaintances that have managed to enter into a mutual relationship of love and attraction with another person.

My bad, I mixed it up. But my point about her friends still refering to her by her maiden name/surname out of habit still stands.
