EVA was the one true expression of the medium that transcended the art form; the nature of what anime is meant for (wish fulfillment for teens/young adults, largely sex based but with scenarios that cater to their oversensitivity and need for non-threatening interaction) was subverted, analyzed, and thrown back in the face of the viewers whom still clung to anime as an interpersonal pacifier. If you didn't get the abstruse philosophizing, Anno allowed the murdering of your favorite characters and unraveling of any ship-centric narrative remnants to do the job. And it did so marvelously

The 2.0/3.0 bait-and-switch was a return to his greatness, not seen since EoE. We're so lucky to once again experience his expressions once more

I don't know how this shit got so popular in Japan but I think it's safe to say that shit will never catch on here, not even among children a.k.a the target audience of this drivel. I tried to think of the typical anime that Dragon Ball haters loved even though said anime really wasn't any better and Cardcaptor Sakura sprang to mind. I probably should have gone with Slayers instead, as that seems more appropriate now that I think about it.

People posted that all the time from the late 90s to the mid 2000s. Now they've moved onto bashing other anime like Naruto, Bleach, SAO and Attack on Titan.

DBZ and GT are still guilty pleasures of mine, but the original Dragon Ball is far superior and a pretty fun show too.

Hey folks...most of the threads I've been responding to lately have been dying down, so I thought, hell, why not start my own one (I mean, weirder things have happened.) My only guidelines were that it couldn't be a topic that would eventually degenerate into either the sub vs. dub debate or the fansub debate (although knowing RAAM it eventually will.) So...what, in all of your anime viewing, has been the most important tape to you and why? It can be incredibly personal reason or simply what's been the most entertaining. I just want to know what and more importantly _why_.

For me, it was Warriors of the Wind. Yeah, I know, its a terrible version of a classic film, but it stills holds a special nostalgic meaning for me. When I was like 9 or 10, HBO was showing W of the W incessantly, and I must have watched it a billion times. My mom couldn't quite understand what my attraction was to a cartoon about bugs (but moms aren't known for their innate understanding of the weird things their kids like.) I can honestly say that this, with a few other movies, really cemented my love for film and my desire to become a filmmaker (And in retrospect, the film is responcible for sucking all my money out of my wallet for school. Damn Miyazaki. ;)

For me, the anime that has been the most important is "Ushio & Tora: volume
1." I loved Tora because he was so comically evil, and his voice was pretty
cool too. :)

"Ushio & Tora" was important also because it was the first Anime that REALLY
got me into subtitling. I had other subs, but this was the only one that I'd
watch frequently and never got tired of it.

And yes, it is still at the top of my list today. :)

Later!

Well, Akira was the first anime I saw that I contiensciously thought
of as anime. I liked it very much when I first saw it. I also (maybe at
the same time) started watching Sailor Moon on YTV, and fell in love with
the show, but I didn't really think of it as "anime".

Akira led me to watch some of BGC (via word or mouth) which was the first
subbed anime I had ever seen. It was interesting, but did not hook me
right away, though I gained an interest in the genre. I rented the first
volume of Ranma1/2, and was amazed at how.. different the storyline was
from anything else I had ever seen on NA tv. I became more interested in
it, and eventually was hooked on Ranma (and still am). After getting over
my initial Ranma-only phase, however, I started trying out more and more
stuff. I went back to BGC, however, and saw a couple more volumes. After
seeing Moonlight Rambler and .. the other one after that..^_^;;, I was
hooked on that as well. All the while, still watching Sailor Moon. When
I layed my eyes on the R movie, I knew that Sailor Moon would forever have
a special place in my heart. In the middle there too, I saw Gunbuster,
which became special to me as well for various reasons.

But I digress, Ranma 1/2, BGC, Sailor Moon, and Gunbuster..

There's this half Japanese girl on my course, I keep seeing her around campus. I asked her to come see Madame Butterfly with me, but she's moving back to Japan in a few weeks, and I'll never see her again. I need her touch, but she'll be across the sea.

That would have to be ShinSeiki Evangelion. Why? I'm not sure...it's

purpose of life, and I seem to have found a big piece of the puzzle with

/Otaku No Video/ by far. I may have enjoyed other anime more, but the
dual inspiration and threat message in /Otaku No Video/ clinched it for me:
either I get my rear in gear and make this obsession of mine useful, or I'll

Evanjellydonut is a gateway anime of the worst kind. If you want /a/ to regain its elitist reputation, then start by sagebombing "What the fuck did I just watch" and "Did nothing wrong" threads like you do to Naruto threads. That would be Record of Lodoss War. The first anime I saw after being
introduced to the genre by one of the cognoscenti was Gundam 0083, which
we watched all at one go and ended at 5:30 in the morning. At the time, this
friend asked if I wanted to see more of this Japanese animation stuff, and
somewhat deliriously I said yes. When the next title he pulled out was
Lodoss, I totally flipped. I had never imagined that people could tell that
kind of a story with a cartoon (shows how much I had been indoctrinated with
the mainstream version of animation, I guess). The quality of the art, the
story, and the characters somehow caught my imagination, and it would be
fair to say that my outlook on life changed by quite a bit. Now that I've
seen much more anime, I won't claim that Lodoss is the best at any particular
thing (though their depiction of elves is still my reference) but it was
exactly the right thing at the right time, and I've cherished it ever since.

Everyone go buy/rent "UY Beautiful Dreamer"

UY:BD is one, if not the greatest anime of the many that I have seen.
I first saw it rening it from Blockbuster, it was my first taste of UY
and I fell in love with the series on the spot. Before I saw this
anime was just, you know, a hobby, something to do with my time, this
is what sent me on the path toward Otakudom. Everyone should go and
rent or buy, or buy several copies (^_^ I have it subbed video,
subbed CD Rom, and I'll probably get the dubbed version too
eventually) for this is a show that truely makes you think and feel,
and it also shows that UY is better than Ranma 1/2 *beeda* ^_~
\anyway, going back to this "Which Anime is Most Important to You" or
whatever the exact words of the thread were, I'd say that this is
probably mine.

I'd say Fushigi Yuugi, because it gives me a dream to reach for. So much
of their interaction was not dependant on their magical abilities or whatnot,
but on their own hearts and minds. I secretly hope to be loved the way Miaka
is. This is the dream I reach for. This show shows me that even idiot, messy
people can be good and do the right thing and in the end, help somebody and
be appreciated for it.
We just don't appreciate people enough in this day and age. We say "thankyou"
as more of a formality than out of any seriousness. When's the last time you
told someone besides your SO or parent(s)/guardian(s) that you appreciate
them for caring about you? And for some of us, when was the last time you
told your SO or parent(s)/guardian(s)?

Miaka thought about others' feelings, and wouldn't do something if she felt
it hurt someone else bad enough. She nearly gave Tamahome up just so her
friend Yui could be happy finally. And look how she treated Amiboshi.

Gah. Someone will probably flame me for preaching. Forgive me if it seems
that way. Just saying what FY means to me and how it affects me.

For me, it was the first bit of Anime that I (knowingly) saw. A
fansubbed copy of Wings of Honneamise at the Utexas Anime club.
What floored me was the depth and complexity of plot, the
characterizations, and the stunning animation. Especiallyh that
launch sequence. I work and JPL, I've seen launches, and DAMN, was
that bit of animation good.

Maison Ikkoku is also up in the top of the list for me. Great story
line. Too many words to describe... That would put KOR on that list
too.

Anything my Miyazaki. 'nuff said.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor. If ever there was a good example to live
your life the Zen way, that's it. Very funny.

Because of the type of introduction I've had, I really don't like the
"tits and ass and gore for the just for the sake of it" genre. It
just doesn't do it for me. Unfortunately, that's the image that
sells in the US. I've had quite a few people turn up their noses at
me thinking I was a pervert whenever I mentioned my anime collection
hobby. But fortunately I've been able to turn some people around at
my weekly showings.

Even though torrents weren't popular back then, we wouldn't have needed them anyway, we would all have gotten it from usenet since it wasn't blocked.

We would talk about the shitty anime from then and it would have been much to do about the endless Dragon Quest remakes. Shit really. If you wanted a good /a/ take it back to the 20's those were the days of splendor in the east and west, Rome stood in the west, Constantanople in the east and the art and riches would have brought intelligent to the forum of /a/.

I don't have my latest Animerica in front of me, but apparently Sarah

able to spend the time VAing Ranma. If I'm remembering correctly, she's
going to finish the current set of videos. They haven't decided on a

I think that this is one of the best films I've ever seen, period.
It is the film that got me into anime to begin with. It reminds me
of Fellini's "Juliet of the Spirits", but everyone here has heard me
say this about a million times already. You should see some of the
other UY movies, my next favorite is "Lum the Forever"...it's great.
Oh heck, the entire UY series is great. I only wish that Animeigo
could manage to get it out on tape in my lifetime *or* I could
find someplace that has the original series, unsubbed, on tape or
laserdisk. I'm getting desperate!

Last I heard Marge was still played by Julie Kavner, who, last time I saw
her in a live action flick, didn't seem too manly.
Also, we can't forget that the Japanese Shinji was played by a woman.
Personally, I think this is nothing more than a continuation of a trend
prevalent since the early days of animation of women/girls playing young
(i.e. undeveloped, no voice change) boys. Ranma I can't peg as easily, as
from what I've read of the comic he's supposed to be like, 15-16, right?
Hmmm...maybe Viz just couldn't afford another voice actor...wouldn't be
the first time they've cut corners....

It's really hard to rewatch some of the old stuff. My memory of it is better than it actually was. But anime in the 90's was mind blowingly better than other forms of entertainment at the time.
Now there is just so much to choose from at a much higher level of animation quality. It's odd that modern remakes aren't really appealing.

Um, wrong about the simpsons.
Bart.........Nancy Cartwright. Not a girl. She's an adult.
Marge...........Julie Kavner. Not a man. She's been in some movies,
but I can't remember any right now.

Lisa.........Yeardley Smith. Sounds like that in real life. Or at
least on Simpson's and Herman's head

This was from the 1990 cd Simpson's Sing THe Blues.
Which I'm listening to right know.

Maybe I'm just voice deaf or haven't seen/heard enough of Ranma, but
the voice isn't that bad. Just doesn't suit the part, that's all.
Maybe it would sound better if Tenchi and Ranma switched voice actors?

That would be interesting.

I have no experience watching 70s-90s anime as a child, and have only started watching it after watcing pretty much only anime from 2000 onward for for the past four years and I have no idea what you are talking about. Everything I have watched so far has been great and much better than 90% of currently airing anime that has "higher animation quality". I realize there are more anime nowadays, and that even back then when there was less anime produced, most of it wasn't that good and hasn't been remembered. But there are loads of absolutely amazing old series.

Are you seriously trying to tell me the typical modern LN adaption has better quality than mid 80s -90s anime? Because that would be asinine. I don't understand people like you.

Well, the first anime I ever watched was Dominion Tank Police, Act 3,
but it was Mermaid Forest and Ranma 1/2 that really got me hooked. I
rented Mermaid Forest one day, and absolutely loved it. Of course, I
went out and told my best friend, who told me about Ranma 1/2.

I asked him what it was about, and he told me with a grin, "Well,
there's this guy, Ranma, who turns into a girl..." Whoa, I thought.
Now that series has *got* to be funny. So I bought 3 of the TV series
movies - 1, 2, and 6. I got six because they didn't have 3. :)

And from then on, I was an addict. Still am, and have devoted a great
deal of time to writing Ranma fanfics. :) Now, I just have to learn
Japanese so I can read all those elusive manga...

Cowboy Bebop: Set in far future, "Spike" leads a rag-tag team
of bounty hunters. Spike is a Bruce Lee-loving Nunchak using afro,
who is more intelligent than his usual clownish character suggests.
The team consists of a foxy woman, cyborg man, and a computer genius
girl. The feel of it is basically Lupin III set in Crusher Joe type
setting. As a person who was raised with 80s anime, I'm looking forward
to this new TV series. :)

Maze Bakuretsu Jikuu: Based on the MAZE novels and radio drama,
unlike the OVA series this TV series will tell the story from the
beginning. I really like Akahori Satoru's works, although I'm a little
worried this TV series is a bit toned down. Airs late nights.

Slayers TRY: Third Slayers TV series. After the defeat of
Fiblizo, the wall that was separating Lina's world from the rest of the
world was broken. Now the world has contact with "outer" world, and
new frontiers as well as civilizations are discovered. Fillia, a
priestess of Fire Dragon from the Outer world comes for Lina's help.

With you old men, you only love anime even more

We never hear from the middle aged washouts who think that anime was a mistake and want to die but constantly delay their suicide until after the season is over
>>
>>119614369
Shin Tenchi Muyou: The Second Tenchi TV series. Tenchi decides
to leave the house, and move into the city, leaving behind the gang.
The gang, of course, creates a dimentional tonnel (with Washu's help)
to Tenchi's bed, so they can visit him whenever they want. At the new
school, a girl named Sakuma falls for Tenchi. At the same time, Tenchi
are attacked by demons. For some reason, Tenchi's teacher is a clone
of Fujisawa sensei, and Sakuma looks just like Makoto/Fatora. hmm. :)

Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Main character is a boyish girl, who are
popular among girls (as romance target) in her odd academy. The academy
has strange rules, consisting of "duelists" who fight for right to
enslave the "bride of Rose". Utena, the main character sees Ancie the
"bride of rose" being abused by one of the duelists, and challenges him
to a duel. Utena encountered a "prince on white horse" in her young age,
and instead of wanting to be his bride like most stereotypical princess,
her impression was "cool! I'm gonna be like that guy!" which explains
her boyish character.

Hyper Police: based on manga series by MEE-kun. The time is
22nd holy century. Humans have diminished in numbers, to be replaced
by majority beast-men. Tokyo is also infested by Demons and monsters.
Main character Natsuki is born between a cat-woman and a human, and
belongs to a private police force, fighting to solve cases despite her
abundance of failure. The majority of the characters seems to have
beast decendants, with some characters heavier towards humans, and some
heavier towards beasts. the show seems mostly comedy. Airs late night.
>>
>>119614422
Haunted Junction: Based on manga series running in Comic Gao,
the story is about team of students who want co-existence of ghosts
and spirits within the school to live (???) happily with the students
who goes to the school. Character design is by Nakajima Keiko, who is
known for character designing Ranma TV/OVA/Movies, and Houma Hunter
Lime series.

Pocket Monster: Based on popular game with the same title on
Game Boy. The setting is an strange parallel universe, which is hard
to tell if it's beggining of century or at the end. "Pocket Monster"
co-exists with humans. There are over 150 types of these mysterious
creatures, and they all share one same trait: They evolve. At 10
years old, human child is given permission to use a pocket monster.
They have the right to go on a journey to train them selves at a
pocket monster trainer. Um, yeah, it's a kid's show. :)

Kindaichi Shounen no Jiken haku: Finally, the popular manga
series based on grandson of famous detective Kindaichi is now a TV
series. Kindaichi Hajime is a highschool boy, who is neither good at
sports nor studying. However, when it comes to solving mystery cases,
he shows an uncanny genius detective skills. The problem is, this manga
series is an long-time best seller series, and the TV series will be
faithful to it. Meaning, a lot of people already knows how the cases
end. ^^; It'll be interesting to see how they get around that problem.

Grander Musashi: Based on manga series in Korokoro Comic, this
is a fishing story. Musashi moves to a country side with his father.
However, he refuse to move to such a boring place, and stries to sneak
out to get back to Tokyo. While he's on journey to get back to Tokyo,
he begins an interest in fishing. BTW, Korokoro Comic is a kid's manga
magazine, and I expect this to also be a kid's anime.
>>
>>119614472
HARELUYA B0Y: Based on popular manga series in Shounen Jump.
Main character, Hibino Hareluya is a very short-tempered boy, who gets
into fights all the time. (and calls himself the invincible man).
Instead of interdimentionall mallet, he has frying pan that comes out
of no where, to whack his opponents ^^; He joins a rock band named
Fire Guns, and aims to become true rockers.

Kerokero Chime: Based on manga series in Ribbon.
Human boy Aoi was put on a curse by brother of Mimori, the princess of
Frogs. The curse made him turn into a frog whenever he is splashed
water, and reverts back to human when the water dries. Mimori helps Aoi
out on journey to find the cure for this curse, to collect Book of Magic
that's spread around the world.

Cutey Honey F: Cutey Honey is back on air. This time though,
it's cutified to modern shoujo anime style. (Character design is
reminicient of Sailor Moon series) It takes the time slot of Sailor
Moon series. In this rendition of Cutey Honey, appearantly she's NOT
an android, but an ordinary high school girl who was given a ring by
her father. The ring can "freeze" air molecules to shape into anything.
Yes, she still has Honey Flash sequences. :)

Hope you find this useful. ^_^

Those of you who were lucky enough to see any of these, please
post your comments on the title in this newsgroup.

Personally, I want to see Kindaichi Shounen, Cowboy Bebop,
Cutey Honey F, Maze, and Utena. ^_^

The little fox-like Pocket Monster is cute, but the show has as much depth
as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There's just not much to it. The
bad guys want to make all monsters evil, and the good guys want to stop
them.

This show gave me a real headache. I don't think many American fans will
like this one at all.

My reports are putting this as the new topmost hit in the new season.
Some people may not like the shoujo style art convention. Having
watched this, I must say this show has a strong lesbian-gay orientation,
considering Utena's love interest seems to be Ancie, another girl. But
anime has always demonstrated to be far more open on sexual topics and
controversial social issues. This show is clearly the most unusual I
have seen for years and is most definitely recommended watching.

Is it just me or was the new ending even WORSE then the original? I was
watching in pain with a friend. It started out good with the new Eva series
fighting, and was good all the way up until Shinji started acting like a
wuss again. Then everyone on earth DIES. I didn't mind that so much. Then
it got all confusing again all the way up till then end with Shinji choking
Asuka to death. WHAT THE FUCK!!! I was originally very happy that they
were going to do a new ending, but now I wish they hadn't!

Nothing will be different

Instead of old fags now complimenting late 80's and 90's anime and old /a/ jokes and bragging about being here for 10 years,
We'll be complimenting 00's and 10's anime, making jokes like "THE HEART" and bragging about being here 30+ years.

The only thing that might really change is the demographic of /a/ now is 18 to 30, then /a/ with half of /a/ will be 50 year olds shitting on teenage and 20's newfags.

/a/ will become an olds gentlemen's club

That is, if /a/ or even 4chan is around by then.
Thats what scares me, what if something replaces the internet? Will there be a 4chan on that new thing? What will you do when 4chan is gone? Who will get your sarcastic insults and racism?

Excuse most of the below, I don't know many of the actual japanese names
for these people, so I'll go with the things they've done.

: Director

The same director who did MI.

: Character designer?

Takahashi herself should have some real influence here.

: Voices - Kagome?

Kyoko Otanashi's voice for the japanese version, Kelly Sheridan
(Ukyou) for the dub.

: Inu-Yasha?

While his voice doesn't really fit Mouuse, the Mousse's
seiyuu<sp?> would be good for this one, his english voice would have to
be the same person who did Agito on the Guyver dubs (from US Renditions).

: Kaede?
: Yura?

I've only read the first issue so far, and I can't remember these two (if
they appeared).

Rei Ayanami is the introverted, blue-haired character from Neon Genesis
Evangelion. Try a web search for "Evangelion" and/or "Rei Ayanami" (note
the spelling) and you'll probably find an image of her.

In college in the early half of the 90s, I was part of a group that made subs. One of our guys knew a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy in Japan who would tape shows as they aired on TV or buy the tapes as he could and mail us copies. It wasn't cheap. We each(8 if us) would pitch in between 5 to 10 bucks an episode. But once we got our tape, we'd take it to the university's AV lab where we could make use of the editing equipment to add our subtitles. I never did then, nor now, really know any Moon beyond a few words and phrases. I was just responsible for the lab's equipment and going over the script to check for grammar, spelling and making the sentences read quickly and intelligently.
Oh, and before you ask, yes, we did give our subs the piss yellow letters because that's how the professionals did it.
