Not OP, but I'm genuinely asking here. What other shonen series ended with a movie explaining the love life of the male MC after the original series? An explicitly romantic movie, at that?

Some people have brought up a Rurouni Kenshin movie that is all about Kenshin/Tomoe relationship, but that's backstory stuff to the main series, not a conclusion.

I admit that I don't watch anime movies enough. But can you give me a hint if there's another like it? Because as of right now I think The Last Naruto the Movie is the only example of a post-shounen series movie that chooses to focus on the romantic conclusion for the male MC. And I'm not comfortable saying Naruto is unique in anything.

It is definitely winding down.
The main manga has ended in November, the anime is having some fillers but will likely end sometime in 2015.
There is some Live Action stuff in the works, mostly theatre but there were rumors of a movie of the whole story. No one's sure about it though.
Kishimoto will do a miniseries about Bolt in April about Bolt with a movie planned for August.
There are also rumors of the anime including some filler arcs between chapters 699 and 700, basically doing Naruto GT.

But beyond that (and do note that most of this stuff is merely rumors at this point, with only the April and August miniseries and movie confirmed) the series is done.

That's why we're hoping for Byakugan. It'd give him a completely different fighting style and would put the emphasis on taijutsu for most fights.

That's probably why most people want him to have the Byakugan eventually.
While OP against normal people, the Gentle Fist and recon abilities have decent limits as opposed to the Sharingan, while th use of the eyes would give him something relatively under-explored to play with, especially should he also learn his grandfather's teleport technique.
Mix in some Sage/frog stuff from his father and Jiraiya (the crazy hair thing and the swamp tech?) and he'd have a fair bit more versitality and potential for interesting fights than his father's grand total of two techniques.
It would also be fun to see the Hokage do some shit every now and then and DON'T use his signature Rasengan, having actually learned other shit in the meantime, maybe using it as a finishing move once.

The fundamental problem is that while anyone can tease, do some light fanservice and perhaps even imply a relationship, it's pretty hard to deliver.

You really should not, the anime is rather bad with how much filler there is, not to mention the varying quality of animation and the story being shit to start with.

If you want a sample of the better parts I recommend the Hidan/Kakuzu and Pain arcs (although the latter has fucking terrible animations once Naruto loses his shit at Hinata getting stabbed). Still, Jiraiya's fight, Naruto dealing with loss and growing as a character and learning Sage tech, plus on top of it all Hinata's confession more than makes up for it.

Compared to others this show let some romantic stuff have almost decent screentime/be a reasonable part of characters' motivation. The expectations were also very low so you had the power of surprise, plus the best girl winning was probably one of the very few things editor-kun didn't get his hands on.

Throw in the fact that Hinata was one of the few characters who actually got an arc and that her confession happened at the height of one of the best parts of character growth for the main character himself, and you got some uncharacteristically good stuff for the manga.
Real shame it was followed up by the Kage Summit's DARKNESS and the letdown that was the war.
