I agree it did suck, although I am glad I watched it right before going back to college. Watching them actually freak about going to class made me feel guilty about skipping, now I've really got the ball rolling since classes are back in session.

Where as other tropes are uncommon for no good reason, the lack of college anime is probably more of a marketing thing. Most people who watch are Japanese teens in high school, most can relate. Plus, just about everyone has gone to high school, not everyone goes to college. Each college has an entirely different atmosphere too, so capturing a "stereotypical" college atmosphere would probably be beyond what any mangaka or anime...ka...would even bother with. I do prefer the college setting though...high school was lame
