2. Watch UBW (UFOTABLE)
3. Decide to wait out for the end of UBW, or if you really must and cannot contain your autism to win nerdbattles on /a/, you can play the VN

There is zero reason to choose an objectively inferior, decade old eroge VN over a far superior, better artstyle, animated, version of it.

Additionally the other fate releases spoil Fate/Zero -- the best standalone release of the entire fate series. It is idioitic to complain about how it ruins a subpar route like HF, when reading HF/FSN spoils Fate/Zero.

Fate/Zero is one of the greatest selling anime of all time for good reason. And /a/ will never stop being butthurt over it.

F/SN manga and F/HA manga ran/run in Shonen Ace. F/Z manga runs in Young Ace. That should make it pretty obvious what Japan thinks the demographic is.

90% of the "concept" might come from Type-Moon, but that's very different from the execution. Urobuchi did not write the novels based on any fixed outline or even a summary of major events. Instead he created most of the actual story himself based on the rough boundaries of what the story would have to be about. Nasu acknowledges him as a very good writer, which is why they wanted him to do Fate/Zero in the first place. It would be pointless if all he contributed was rewriting something which already existed.

No one disputes that Nasu has very good ideas. He's an idea man. But his actual writing and execution for stories is pretty horrid. The way he develops characters and the dialogue he writes is generally pure trash. His scenarios are also bogged down with shitty crap which doesn't make the best use of the good general ideas.

This is why Fate/Zero is not considered purely a Type-Moon work. Because it is written by a writer who actually knows how to use the good ideas well, and craft a compelling story with good characters in it.

I'm telling you that F/Z carried that development far more effectively. I'm not saying that everybody in F/SN was a total stranger while Shirou pranced about in his bubble of main character development, I'm saying that F/Z's format allowed for a superior exploration of its cast and their inner workings.

The whole point of F/Z is how flawed Kiritsugu's methods are. The reason he doesn't care about the fact he summons an honourable Servant is that he doesn't care about the Servant herself, he simply sees Saber as a tool to be used. Also with regards to Kariya, he actually did try and seek out Tokiomi on his own when both Servants were engaged and look where that got him.

I have to say I have a complete opposite viewpoint to your own with regards to how the actions of each pairing was dealt with in both works. In F/SN ultimately the action of almost every Servant/Master combo save for some minor variation at notable times was "Find another Servant, fight until one of you dies, move on".

Compare this to F/Z, where you have Rider and Waver tracking down Caster's home and using a bit of gorilla warfare to weaken him; Kiritsugu doing Kiritsugu things and using the Servants as a distraction; Assassin being used for various deceiving tactics, if not the most useful ones, and various other tactics used throughout the series aside from "kill them till they die". And then you have Rider, Gil and Saber all sitting down for a chat, along with the various fights that were purely mage-versus mage, completely independent of their Servants. Not once was there a straight 1-on-1, or even 2-on-1 or 2-on-2, Servant fight without something to tip the scales going on in the background and it ultimately gives the feel of a more strategic "war" than F/SN.

The problem is that Zero has the same issues with some of its characters and doesn't have as much focus as some say.

Tokiomi is pretty much one dimensional magus nobility, and so is Kayneth. Kariya's motivations aren't expanded upon and the audience is left to just think he wanted Aoi's thick ass and that was it, which was overturned in Zero Material. Waver, Kiritsugu, and Kirei were the only characters not used primarily as vehicles for suffering.

Even the hyped Iskandar vs. Gilgamesh fight was underwhelming when you realize one never even got to touch the other one. It was flashy, and Urobuchi can do flashy, but lacked substance.

For FSN, Medea, Medusa, and Lancer got extensive extra stuff in Hollow, and it helped flesh even more for other characters, like Saber talking about her marriage to Guinevere. SoL or no, that "fandisk" did more to show the all sides to the characters than Zero ever did.

F/Z was meant to be a flashy homage to FSN, as said by Urobuchi in the writer notes. It bothered me though that so many characters were just used as vehicles for suffering, with much of their good backstory left out. It's an ensemble cast not used correctly.

There were things Nasu agreed with and praised him for, but equally things he had to what him across the head about because he was being too edgy. Like his original ending scene for Kariya and Sakura.

Urobuchi even admits in the author notes about his problems with cynicism, and that this story was a chance for him to not have to hold back that part of himself and it shows. A lot of characters were made that lacked agency besides the role they fit for the plot, like Sola, Iri, and Maiya, coincidentally all women.

Let's not even get into how that Rin episode showed how badly Tokiomi needed to be shown outside of this flat, magus noble who says he cares about his family, but you barely see any evidence about it aside from one quick scene, to the point he is used as a clueless dandy oji-san in any extra material he is in. Most of the good stuff is in the drama CDs and even then that was only showing further that Aoi and Tokiomi are clueless parents.

Obviously, the entire 'murder' thing with Ryougi is an extended metaphor for repressed sexuality as a result of growing up in a very prudish, traditional family. In MSP1, Shiki/SHIKI manifests a tatemae/honne dichotomy so extreme as to come across as different personalities entirely. Caught in the conflict between the expectations placed on her behaviour and her growing-to-be-overwhelming attraction to Kokutou, she eventually has a psychotic break and tries to rape him.

Fortunately, 'Shiki', who embodies the values she's had beaten into her since childhood, wrests control and immediately tries to commit suicide out of shame. The entire rest of the story is an internal conflict centered around sex addiction. MEoDP are a metaphor for constant intrusive thoughts of a sexual nature (I had a joke about Mystic Eyes of 'D' Perception, but I've got more class than that, don't I?) The conflict is between the traditional values espoused by her grandfather ('you can only kill one person in your life' can here be interpreted as 'monogamy 4 lyfe, otherwise you're a useless whore') and her own desire to slut it up as much as possible. The latter manifests through her persistent attempts to lose her virginity to a string of casual, self-destructive relationships with:

I did, and it's better at showing some points about the characters, but as I said, nothing comes of it.

Gil and Iskandar are hyped up to the limit, but their actual confrontation makes Alex pretty much ineffectual. It's flash, but little in the way of substance. The only part that was really satisfying was the ending scene with Waver, which culminated the bond he had with Alex.

Another anon pointed out the point I made about Tokiomi with his family better than I could. He was made to foster development for Kirei's fall, but little else. I couldn't feel his dilemma as a father because he literally said, "I didn't prepare for a another daughter when I really shouldn't have, and rolled the dice on her life and shuffled in place on what to do with her until someone bailed me out instead of taking action".

It lost a lot of the impact of his decision, when he seems to not have cared about it too much to go out of his way to find a solution himself. Especially when he claims that a child without a crest are stolen away and put into formaldehyde by the Association as experiments if their powers are too great. He looked like a bumbling fool, but somehow Kariya gets all the flack.

This is only the tip of the iceberg of characters who were ultimately just plot devices, despite rather interesting concepts.

You could learn not to make assumptions about people not reading.

Considering the scene where that is mentioned had Rin tutoring Shirou on how to make the medicine, which I am sure Rin mentioned in vanilla FSN(how magi develop resistance to the crest through the generations). It's pretty natural that Rin, who by canon is Shirou's magic tutor, would give him such an assignment.

And please, enough of the "fanfic". There were guest writers, but people don't even know which ones those were besides Meteor and which were Nasu's and use it as an excuse to argue character personalities. Rin's scenes in particular are contested, even when it's pretty much fact that Rin has a hot temper at times.

Iirc On paper the characters in the loop are "copies" of the real ones (including Avenger/Shirou in non-plot relevant scenes), so while the happenings won't have any consequence their behavior is the "right" one.
The problem is that HA is mostly made of guest writers-made poorly SoL scenes, which kind of defeats the point. See Rin being handled like your token bipolar violent tsundere depending on who's writing.

But that doesn't mean that all of HA is to be dismissed as Avenger wanking, at least when comes to (hypotetical) characters interactions.
Shirou never happened to ask Ilya the caste dining room for a dinner with Sakura in the real world, but if he actually did then Ilya would probably act just as her loop counterpart.

At least that's what i got out of her explanation of the "neverending 4--day long Heaven's Feel" in oue of the few plot-relevant HA scenes.

In yesterday's thread got people telling me it was HF equivalent of F/SN while F/E was like Fate.

Getting some conflicting messages here.
