> 1 TB of anime, settings, and pictures from 2008 gone.

How do you cope with losing data?
>>
by backing it up next time
>>
>>119343159
I put them on a external hard drive and pull them out when I want to
EHD are replaced every 6 years
SSD drives every 3 years
HDD's every 5 years

I've never lost data.

>Get new hard drive
>Time to get new fetishes
>>
Did you think it would never die?
HDDs are mortal.
>>
I never managed to crash a hard drive.
Always wondered how people achieve that.
>>
>>119343205
I regret not doing this back when I was a kid. So many years of pictures/videos/songs gone.
>>
>>119343255

What possible fetishes are there left to explore? I've gone, seen, and fapped to things that no man, woman, or beast have deigned to before, and you think that I could acquire new ones at such a point! Pah!

>>119343296
It died randomly while I was on vacation. It was fine beforehand, and one of the hard drives killed itself. I'm trying to see if I can recover it long enough to get the pictures off, but I'm not holding my breath.

The sad thing is that this the second time it happened. The first time I lost my early teenhood memories, and now the second I lost my late teenhood and early adulthood.

I even lost my precious, precious programming projects.
>>
I try to put my 4mm, any kind of rope-like material strong enough to hang a man, sleeping pills, and helium in a vault that I can't access for more than a month every five years or so. Thank god there aren't any high rises here in the sticks.
>>
>>119343159
My oldest hard drive is reaching a couple years old, so soon I plan on buying a new Toshiba one and moving it all there. The Toshibas have a nice feature that puts it to sleep when its not being used, so the shit stops spinning.
>>
I'm paranoid so I've got a few external hard drives and put everything on them, including double ups of the most important things.

But just take it as an opportunity to start fresh, have it all organized perfectly, etc. Unless it was all perfect to begin with, I guess.

You obviously haven't explored enough. Sucks about your projects though.

Forever I will remember the Great Exodus of 2012 when my 1TB hard drive of anime was taking extra long to connect to and was making an ominous whirring. I Grabbed my 25% full new 1TB hard drive of school projects, moved that shit elsewhere, and began the loooong arduous task of transferring it all over. When it was done, the old hard drive almost immediately died.

Fuck.
>>
>>119343159
Even when a hard-drive "dies," it is not technically unreadable. I'd recommend getting an USB-based external HDD reader. They're really convenient and allowed me to get shit off two of my bricked Seagate drives a few years ago.

They're pretty cheap nowadays too.
>>
>>119343425
forgive me for being new to this subject (never happened to me so never botherd to look into it) but couldn't you use gentoo, mounting and shit to recover?
>>
>>119343613
I remember when I lost my first computer of stuff when lightning struck my old windows 98 computer.
>>
Recover it.

I have a 8tb spanning drive that is going to cause a shitstorm when something goes.
>>

> Organizing your images.
I can tell you that I gave up on that after two days last time.

>>119343644
Depends. The problem on my end is mechanical (it would be as simple as reformatting if it was just a bit of corruption in the MBR) - I tried booting Arch (I had a dual-boot setup) and it fired off a trillion I/O errors. Some of the stuff is irretrievable, for sure.
>>
>>119343159
This.

Even then, I delete a series when I am finished with it. Unless it's a really long series or ongoing.
>>
>tfw you will forever your 2gb HDD full of 640x480 anime wallpapers
>>
>>119343296

it is not something you do anon, after a long time of usage it crashes
>>
>>119343467
>Toshibas have a nice feature that puts it to sleep when its not being used
almoast every hard drive has that feature today
>>
I back up monthly because I'm lazy, I need to start doing it every fortnight.
>>
>>119343983
ive had a 500gb hd for 8 years now no crash whatsoever
>>
>>119344405
Okay there is serveral things that i find amazing about that
>Have not used more than 500gb in 8 years
>been reading and writing for 8 years and it is not broken
>>
>>119344548
not him but ive used a 360gb HDD for the last 5 years and i just delete shows ive watched and always have plenty of free space
>>
Redownloading anime isn't a big deal, but I'd fucking kill myself if I ever lost my music collection or picture folder. All that hand-collected shit can't be replaced.
>>
Why does it matter? If you have seen them already there is no point in keeping them
>>
>>119344636
ah i see, i think it kinda defeats the purpouse of downloading if i delete it afterwards, i have 3TB and a 1TB filled with anime and manga. Im running a small SSD for my OS and games
>>
I don't keep anything of worth on my internal drive. I have one 500 GB external for general stuff and multiple back ups for anime. Every couple of years I buy a new external with more capacity, then I transfer over all anime from the previous drive. This ensures plenty of back ups (albeit a year or two out of date) and a fresh HD for my full collection.

Basic data safety, people. RAID 5 in your desktop and backed up onto another RAID 5 in your NAS.

Sorry, I'm not an idiot.
>>
>>119345004
Cash man, I cant afford so many HDD's in my current state

>If one crashes just buy a new one and copy everything from the one that didn't crash
>never had to deal with lost data

What are you, poor?

>hard drive crashed
my worst fear
what pains me is that most of the anime I downloaded probably don't have seeders anymore.
also, I'm banned from bakabt because I was oblivious to their seed ratio bull
>>
Consider this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change my life.
It has yet to happen.
>>
>>119343159
By starting over again. Anime can be downloaded again.
>>
>>119347335
>doesn't seed torrents
>won't be able to get his anime because no seeders
I love poetic justice.
>>
Purchase Cloud Storage.
>>
>>119347392
I learned my lesson.
Now I seed for months but it's too late.
>>
>tfw poor
>can't afford a proper backup drive

S-should I just print out all the images of smug animu girls, sadpanda porn and transfer all the music and videos to dvds?
>>
>>119343159
How can I back up 4 TB of anime on External Drives without going broke?
>>
>>119343159

>Ctrl+A

More than anything, this idea frightens me.

For a lot of us, we're not exactly Paying Customers when it comes to our anime/manga collections. At least when I have them stored locally, I can encrypt and restrict access to them. Once they go in the cloud - with my name attached to them, no less - I'm basically painting a target on my head. I'd rather shell out a few hundred dollars buying a backup drive than paying 10s of thousands if they decide to seize any cloud storage I have.
>>
>>119343159
By not being a data hoarder.
Just kidding, obviously.
>>
Also, why not actually buy some BDs from time to time, if you think the series is worth it? I find plentyin second-hand stores and online trades. Other than dubbed shit, it's a less expensive way to preserve at least part of your collection.
>>
>>119347335
blown the fuck out
>not having atleast 1.000 ratio or whatever that stupid smiley face system is.
>>
>>119347701
A 4TB would cost around 150 eurobux
Thats not exactly going broke

I do Hard Drive checks every once in a while in absolute fear of a hard drive crash.
All my vital stuff is on SSD's though.
>>
>>119347775
>I can encrypt and restrict access to them
And what stop you from doing it in cloud?
>>119347972
Why would you do that, just log out and download torrent, done your ratio is unaffected.
>>
Losing anime isn't a major problem, it is with everything else on a drive that you really feel a sense of loss.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
