Is this a NSFW question ?

Anyone mind checking this over for me, before I put it on sadpanda? Kind of a solo project.

The grays/blacks were kind of a problem. To make the blacks pure black the gray got much too dark. And dropping the gray scale to the point where it was good would mess up the screen tones.

So instead I just make a copy of the layer, blured a little bit, set the image type to threshold, selected the channels, then intervened the selection and feathered the edge. After that just fill it with black and was pretty much set.

Let me know if you spot any glaring mistakes. Thanks.

It's a really hard choice.

No one cares about quality, a good portion of /a/nons read their manga of websites like Mangahere or Mangafox.

A nice balance between quality and speed.

Both.

If it's ongoing, speed, if it's a one shot/doujin then quality.

The page size and tones always give it away, don't delude yourself.

Quality will replace speed in the end. The epitome of speed without quality is Laruffi.

I see the shitty fragmented images posted all the time, no one calls it out like they'd do if there was a Mangafox watermark at the bottom or something.
>>
>>119287421
It's their preference. At this point we even have kissmanga images getting posted, manga will always attract a more variant crowd, including manwha readers.

Speed, ideally we would get shit looking fast versions (with good translations) that would be eventually updated into a version with decent quality
>>
Speed definitely. It's the same with anime too.
>>
>>119287520
I used to call people out for that shit, but it's too much of a hassle these days because there are so many people who do it now.
The quality of posters is without doubt going down.
>>
It's not about a 'speed vs quality' dichotomy.

It's about doing the best possible job in the least possible time. If you take more time than necessary to do a proper job, you;re no better than someone who did a poor job quickly.

For the most part, the largest source of delays for scanlated releases isn't the work involved in actually translating/typesetting it, and it certainly isn't QC or cleaning. It's the other random shit the NEETs piss their time away doing while they procrastinate actual scanlating.
>>
>>119287775
Yeah this.
"b-but it looks a little better' isn't an excuse for being slow as molasses when you're slow because you spend all week playing MMOs and can't follow a schedule.

The resolution and the shitty image quality always gives it away, don't let Mangafoxtards delude themselves otherwise.

What fonts do you scanlators use?
>>
>>119286875
actually getting it done
>>
>>119288400
I've lost count how many. But I usually use Wild Words Lower for normal dialog.
>>
>>119287775
It's a hobby. You pay me money, and if there is an agreed upon schedule I will attempt to meet it. At that point it's a job and at standard rates it's a job that pays sweatshop-level wages, which is why you can almost count the people that do it as a sideline for money on one hand.

My take on amateur manga scanlation is along the lines of the old saw about software documentation - when it's good, it's a pleasant surprise, and when it's bad, it's better than nothing.
>>
>>119288400
I just lost all my fonts after a hard drive failure, working on setting them up again now. Can't even remember what half the ones I need to get are, I figure I'll remember as I get to bubbles that need them.
>>

Is there a way to categorize manga scanlating fonts in photoshop without searching through the titanic list?
>>
>>119288593
>>119288651
Recommend you put these into \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts
>>
>>119288721
You know, just because dark colors are easier on my eyes it doesn't mean I'm edgy. The word has lost all meaning. It means nothing anymore.
>>
I usually read the highest quality scanlation available. Which doesn't help me at all if there's no scanlation.

Quality is better than no quality, but low quality is better than nothing and there are too many manga (especially older stuff) I haven't seen in English yet.

>>119288761
I usually just install them, is there a reason to use that folder instead?

I only read the highest of high quality works.
>>
>>119286875
I don't care about speed. If I know there will be a release, then it doesn't matter how long it will take for it to have an acceptable quality. What really kills me is having no idea of when the next chapter is coming, or having several chapters released quickly but done in MS Paint.
Some series simply demand quality releases.
>>

I hope you're not bullying the SFX notes!
>>
>>119288861
I was carefully selecting it and using notepad as a reference

>>
>>119288861
I hear that if you have too many fonts installed, your boot-ups will be slowed down. For me, I use that folder because only Adobe software will get that whole pack of font, and not everything else. It's also easier to update/swap fonts in and out with that.
>>
>>119288838
I do. It still looks better.
>>
>>119288987
I'll give it a try, already installed most of what I should need though. I've got (pretty much empty) FontsRequired and FontsRecommended folders already, should I use one of those or make a new Fonts one?
>>
>>119288994
To each his own, the font rendering is terrible so I don't know how vivid colours affect you more than that.
>>
>>119289098
Make a new Fonts folder and dump the fonts in there.

For example, for me, akbar.ttf looks like this:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts\akbar.ttf
>>
>>119288501
>lazy entitled typsetters
You're the worst kind of shitheads to work with. I care about the quality of my work because it's a hobby. I'm invested in my final product, and when I'm stuck with some procrastinating /v/ermin that would rather play videogames than do the work they've agreed to do, and use the excuse "well I don't get paid enough to do a good job XD" it poisons the dynamic of the entire group.

Fucks like you are why there are so few decent translators and typesetters. Nobody wants to get invested in a project if that one procrastinating deadbeat is just going to ruin it for the rest of the group.
>>
>>119289181
Input Sans is not the best font. Too lazy to change it. I am also using MacType.
>>
>>119289199

How important is it, generally speaking in manga/doujin translation to preserve particular speech convention?

For example, if the original phrases an outright statement arbitrarily as a rhetorical question, how important is it to preserve the phrasing as a question? Is it a case-by-case basis sort of thing?
>>
>>119289265
Kinda sad it's only an improvement with bigger font sizes, and not every font gets a huge improvement either way, if only Windows improved that aspect for win7.
>>
>>119289252
I haven't met any or hired entitled slaves myself, but I know too well about the lazy jerks who signed up.

I leaned out my group and kept a core group of guys who were hugely responsible for every project. For me, I do everything after getting the raws and the tl script. Hard work when the page counts are 50+ and lines are long and complex, but I get to work at my own pace and bring quality to the final product.
>>
>>119289371
It always looked weird for me on Windows because I use small fonts. I should probably just switch to Linux, but I play too many games.

Definitely case-by-case. I don't do translations, but it's easy to spot a sarcastic remark. If you can get something similar in the form of a question, good stuff. But no one will take points off you just because you chose another way to phrase it.

It looks great, except for one thing . . . those fonts.
You're better off using a regular comic dialogue font, instead of a fancy script font like the ones you used (if you're the one that did the typesetting). It gets to be distracting.
I did a quick and dirty retyping in Paint, using Back Issues font to show how it would look with a more traditional dialogue font.

Quality because anyone barely bothers to do tank scans so you might as well do a quality release instead of just downloading the raw of a tank and sadly compare it to a fast release.
>>
>>119289751
I keep the original names the raw provider gave.
>>
>>119289820
Not him, but I scanlated on Wine for a while. Never again, getting Photoshop and the plugins I needed to work was such a bitch.
>>
>>119289464
I wouldn't say it's particularly important for the translation to be a grammatical question just because the source is. What matters is that the same meaning is conveyed. If it would sound awkward to use a question there in English, then don't.
But you have to keep the overall context in mind. If someone 'answers' the question (even though it was rhetorical), then the translation may end up sounding weird if it doesn't use a question.
So yeah, it's very much case-by-case.

The best thing about manga is that you can be extremely liberal with your script editing. The moonrunes are erased, so no one will know better. Feel free to make significant adjustments to make your lines flow better.

They both exist on an axis. After a certain level of qaulity, a majority of users will not see the difference, and at the same time, if the quality is bad enough, the speed does not matter.

Not going to lie, that font you used looks awful. All upper case fonts are bad.
I have the advantage of looking at the raws, which I scanned too, and I know your fonts don't really match. I said it was a solo project, so I obviously typeset it.
Plus each character has their own font for dialog and thought in the raws as well. I'll stick with my original fonts, thanks for the input, though.

You can clearly see how Madoka's font is very stylistic even in the raw.
