Why the fuck do all anime characters have flip phones? Seriously, its fucking 2015 and every single one of these niggas has one
>>
>>119274906
Does that look like an anime from 2015 to you?
>>
>>119274906
Flip phones were the smartphones before smartphones were hip.
>>
>>119274948
That's not the point. Even anime from 2014 had flip phones
>>
Why do nips email instead of text?
>>
>>119274987
The Japanese prefer flip phones.
>>
>>119274987
Well then why didn't you use a picture from one of those?
>>
>>119274906
Touch screen phones in anime are becoming more common, they're just behind the times a few years.
>>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_mobile_phone_culture
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gal%C3%A1pagos_syndrome
>>
Most anime are adaptations and many of those adaptations are of things which were written several years ago. It creates a sort of time lag in technology. Smart phones will be common place in anime a few years from now when we start getting adaptations of things written recently.
>>
>>119274906
You see smart phones more often now.
>>
their writing system with smartphones is pretty shitty and hard for some, flip phones are more ''easy''.
>>
>>119274987
Do you even flip?
>>
Flip phones are better than shitty smudgy touchscreens
>>
>>119275014
Cheaper. Our phones are slowly being phased to IP as well.
>>
>>119275043
Because I literally just typed in "anime flip phone" and that was the first one to come up
>>
>>119274987
That was likely an adaptation WRITTEN WHILE PEOPLE WERE STILL USING FLIP PHONES.
>>
>>119275081
Flip phones are still very popular in Japan. Slate phones are taking off but there are at least varieties of Android flip phones available too.

And from what I have seen the reason the Japanese prefer the flip phones is because they must drop them all the time. Everyone seemed to have a cracked screen on their iPhone/slate over there.
>>
>>119275189
>>119275014
Text messages are just a version of email anyway.
>>
Because Apple is a western company
>>
>>119274906
>not realizing the superiority of smart flip phones
>2015
>>
>>119274906
Flip phones are great.
if it wasn't for easy internet browsing, i'd go back to them.
>>
>>119275442
In what way are they superior
>>
>>119275672
No need for screen protector
Physical keypad
Literally everything else in a slate phone can be in it
Positional/rotateable screen so if you want to watch something you can just put the phone down without having to prop it up or hunch over it
>>
Japanese were still commonly using flip phones up until only like 2-3 years ago. So, many anime 2012 and prior still had a lot of them. Given that a lot of adaptations are made from material written in the late 2000s and such the phones are also older there too. It seems they mostly use iPhones these days.

The other thing is that Japan has its phone manufacturers that basically only sell within their country - Docomo, Fujitsu etc, and many of these are smartphone-like in features and can have other oddities Japanese phones have had forever such as TV tuners etc. Hell they have flip phones that run Android; they're basically hybrids.

Lastly a ton of Japan = really old people. They stick with what they know and they've been using flip phones for like 20 years and so they can't even fathom trying to learn something else. Hence the culture kind of pervades. They are also aware that most of the world has moved on; new flip phones there are called gala-style, short for galapagos, referring to the closed-off nature of Japan and how such phones would not sell outside of it.
>>
>>119275795
>Physical keypad
Why did the phone companies abandon this? In what way is a touch screen keyboard superior to a physical one.
>>
>>119275672
>>119274906
>someone is actually asking this
Oh for the more enlightened times when /a/ reminisced about flip phones, and how it was unfair that the nips had them still.
>>
OP, This is a bad example.
This picture is from Haganai, and both of these characters are specifically shown to be incompetent with technology. They're going crazy over getting their first phone contacts and sending their first text messages, a touchscreen phone would be too much for either of them to handle.
>>
>>119274987
Eh, anime are slowly transitioning to smartphones. Oregairu and Parasyte come to mind.
>>
>>119275795
Screen protectors are just consumerist garbage. Don't drop your phone and don't put your phone in the same pocket as your screen and you'll never get a scratch.
>>
>>119275922
Because large screens and keypads don't really go together outside flip phones.

Also, because Apple was successful.
>>
I wish everyone still used flip phones. Real buttons are great and they just look more aesthetically pleasing than a brick that you have to hug to the side of your face.

All it's done is increase ass-dialing and made everyone even more tethered to shallow social media than they were before.
>>
>>119276013
>don't put your phone in the same pocket as your screen
O-okay.

Actually, it is the gorilla glass that is consumerist garbage. I have not exposed my iPod to anything that should be hard enough to scratch the screen and yet it still has gained scratches.

The majority of the Japanese populace use flip phones. Touchscreen phones and other smart phones are more commonly associated with higher level business management.
>>
>>119276115

>>
>>119274987
Not that many actually.

2013 yeah, but smart phones are finally starting to kill Japanese kami flip phones. SeHaGaGa even had Mega Drive bitching about it.
>>
>>119276062

Your opinion is wrong.

>brick that you have to hug to the side of your face
As opposed to a brick you have to hug to the side of your face?

>increase ass-dialing
Completely the opposite.

>made everyone even more tethered to shallow social media
It was inevitible, but phones don't perpetuate social media.
>>

Ass dialing isn't an issue, but the risk of accidentally ending a call on a smartphone means you end up having to hold the phone in some awkward position.

Fuck these pieces of shit, it's a shame that phones have turned into toys that barely serve the initial intended purpose.

Because for some reason japan is in some sort of unholy love affair with flip phones and so the flip phones in japan are more powerful/advance to the flip phones you would find in the west. >>
>>119276563
His statement was wrong, but he is also right.

Phones were increasing their web capabilities steadily before smartphones took off, in Japan the majority of web users used their phones for it which is why their Internet is so ass backwards in design, so the drive towards shallow social media users was already there, it just leaped when phones became an easy platform to develop for as they came closer to being standard computers.

>>119276436
>but the risk of accidentally ending a call on a smartphone means you end up having to hold the phone in some awkward position.
My phone turns off the screen when you hold it to your head during a call so you won't accidentally press any buttons.

Not sure if trolling or genuinely ignorant. Flip keitai are by far the most popular there but they are true smartphones, not the obsolete shit we used a decade ago.
Go ahead, try to find a flip keitai without a touchscreen.
Everyone saying one isn't a 'real' smartphone is retarded or shitposting. Of course they have touchscreen only phones but the flip styles are more popular because of reasons already mentioned here.
I'd have one too if I weren't fucking broke. Why be stuck with something like a Moto X when I could have the best of both worlds instead?
>>119276436
Touchscreen only phones aren't perfect but you're fucking up hard if you hang up a call just talking normally. All modern phones turn off the screen quickly after taking a call just to avoid this.

Flip phones are becoming less popular in Japan for sure, but as many have said - the flip phones they do have are pretty forward thinking. I remember seeing one years ago that had a stereoscopic 3D screen which blew my mind considering the first HTCs were coming out at this point in the west.

I think a lot of it in anime is also down to the same reasons Hollywood movies still use the classic 'ring ring' ringtones when they show even a modern phone - it's there as an illustration that a phone is ringing.

The funniest thing about smatphone's cultural influence is that every future setting even hundreds of years from now all has controls that work like an iphone.

It's the only keitai pic I had saved. The fact remains that despite the form factor, Japanese phones are far superior (FOLDED 1000 TIMES) than western ones. Except maybe IR transceivers. That shit was old 15 years ago. No clue why they still include them on phones that have Bluetooth and NFC.
I presume it's mainly dumbass burgerlanders assuming anything that resembles a flip phone is outdated shit.

IR is a completely no setup form of communication you can quickly use to transfer small amounts of data via direct line of sight, so relatively secure.

You can literally just point your phone at another persons phone and press a button and they get your phone number, email address, whatever you are sending them.

In comparison with Bluetooth and NFC which both require some steps before you get to the process of sending the data.

There is also the fact that you can program the IR transmitter to work for things like your TV or other applications which have an IR receiver in them.

>>119278071

Sorry but they actually are. You can see it in how with some network operators you can send email directly to a phone as a text message by mailing it to the phone number @network operator domain.

The relationship with email is just obscured by character limits, to fit within a single cell response packet, number instead of full address (in Japan you get a full address linked to your number, they are literally just using text messaging addressed to email addresses instead of numbers) and formatting limitations, which leads into the character limit.

>>119281001
Not quite. While the messages are indeed piggybacking on normal cell traffic it is still added traffic through the network. There are still cases of spam or chain text messages that get out of hand and cause congestion other disruption in the network and so it is of a cost to the network operator to manage it. That's aside from when there is a disaster or something which bring s the network into such a gridlock that not even text messages get through.

Major thing between email and SMS is that operator can send SMS to ANY or EVERY phone on their BTS area. That's base of emergency SMS.

In Japan you literally make subscribe deal with operator which rent you phone. Subscribe deal requires all the information what operator want from you. Unlike in EU where you can buy any phone and decide which operator you want to subscribe.

Uh, no, that because they set up an email server that converts emails to SMS messages. You can't just email a text message to a phone.

tfw no juiz
>>
>>119281030
It's dangerous to post that, take this!
>>
>>119282726
Just what kind of release did you get to get file names like this?
>>
>>119283105
I got this one from a sign-up to use site called http://animetorrents.me/
It's good for getting the rare good dual audio series with 720p quality but small file sizes. My Haganai episodes are about 100MB each.
>>
>>119283701
>getting dual audio
>getting re-encoded releases
Congrats for being an idiot.
>>
I miss flip phones.

>dat satisfying click when you open and close
>being able to answer a call just by flipping it open
>that kawaii little screen on the front

Why even live?
>>
>>119283783
What's wrong with saving space on file size, and keeping dual audio files?
My copy of Haganai has objectively more content while taking up objectively less space, how is that bad?
>>
>>119283894
In what occasion do you need to listen to the dub?
>>
>>119283936
When I'm working on a car or multitasking I can't look at the screen, but being able to hear the show lets me follow along just fine, especially if I've already watched it in the original language.
>>
>>119283894
>>119283701
Nice bait.
>>
>Tfw it would have cost more to get an old phone when my Envy 3 died
>tfw 1 dollar upgrade to a smartphone

I feel like I sold out.
I mean, being able to shitpost on the move is nice, but this shitty iPhone feels like it'll break if I type on it too hard.
Least I got a 5c instead of a 6.
>>
>>119283936
There's nothing wrong with being able to hear an alternate version of a joke or pun if you don't understand the Japanese cultural reference, or just really love a specific joke and want to see how the dub translated it.
>>
>>119284013
Anime is not fucking music and isn't meant to be in the background while you do something else, it's like listening to live sport reporting on radio without watching the game, what's the point?
>>119284112
Get the fuck out.
>>
>>119284058
Oh, sorry, last phone was a Cosmos 2

I just preferred the Envy when I had that.

Elevens love their flip phones though many recent works have smartphones. Most of these smartphones tend to look like iPhones but sometimes you find androids and other models as well.
>>
>>119284240
Ok, I'll leave and never return, and continue enjoying anime my own way.

I'm pretty sure everyone had touch screen phones in this show but I only seem to have cute pictures of Noel saved...
>>
>>119284661
How was that show, anyway? It seems to have dropped off the radar.
>>
>>119277940
I think the funniest thing is, if you go back and watch old sci-fi anime or live action, they still look more futuristic and complex than appleshit aesthetics sci-fi has now despite being older.
>>
>>119284784
Since when is being complex a good thing? People are dumb.

Flip > Bricks > Slide > Smartphones
>>
>>119284849
smart > brick > slide > flip
this isn't even up for debate.
>>
>>119284849
Smartphones are brick.
Slide phones are universally the worst because the fucking screen cable always break after a short amount of time.
>>
>>119284991
I had a slide phone that lasted 6 years before it was stolen
>>
>>119284746
It got pretty boring, but atleast the ending was satisfying.
>>
>>119277514
I used to have a black one with a blue glow-in-the-dark Motorola logo. Good times.
>>
>>119285135
More boring than Hyouka?

I'll take that as a "yes"

>You only hate smartphones because they remind you of how old and worthless you are.
>>
I have a few Docomo and Softbank flip phones. They're nice to look at, but a real fucking nightmare to use sometimes.
>>
>>119285649
Thinking about it, I'd bet smartphones have taken a while to show up in anime because of the lag inherent in waiting for enough manga to be made.

>>119285741
Either that or how they have no facebook friends.
>>
>>119277623
I thought it was supposed to be proper etiquette to pay attention to your dinner host or other people speaking, and that was obvious that you should leave your texting to some other time. Guess not.
>>
>>119286288
It is, unless you're stuck having dinner with some loathsome impossible sperglord.
>>
>>119282671
I did do that once with a picture I wanted on my phone (I'm using some cheapass offbrand carrier and my phone requires a verizon account to interface with my computer). I'd sent a picture from phone to email, and I replied to that email with the picture I wanted on my phone.
>>
>>119283823
I miss my old flip phone. It had spring loaded hinge, and a button on the right side of the hinge that you pressed to spring the phone open. It was like a switchblade phone.
>>
>>119286475
I fucking loved this thing.
>>
>>119274906
And i retur the question asking why every fuckinbg one has a smartphone these day.

People look so idiotic walkin with those thing in their hands and spending the entire day string at theirs screens
>>
>>119286903
/a/non you're drunk, go to bed.
>>
>>119286800
Eehh. the screen not folding in means it's still easy to damage, but being able to hold the screen in the sideways position in the middle would be useful for a smart phone designed like that; more horizontal space for web browsing.
>>
>>119286903
You seem to be typing on one right now.
