It became bad retroactively after the terrible last seven episodes.

Therein lies the rub of serial storytelling. Even if you piecemeal out your tale into weekly segments, at the end of the day you have to judge the thing itself based on the whole. If the last serialized fifth of The Count of Monte Cristo had been total shit it would not be a beloved novel today.

A serial composition makes you forget flaws, temporarily. You say, "this has a lot of potential, and if it keeps getting better it'll be really good". But when it doesn't get better you notice all the problems the early stuff had all the more clearly.

But I still think Episode 5 was really great.

My problem was the middle. There was that period with the elections and school trip arcs where it felt like nothing actually happened except for introducing Nui. The show never really got it's mojo back afterwards.

Kill la Kill was an okay anime. A few things were different about it, but ultimately, it wasn't really too good or too bad.

Kill la Kill was good because it wasn't supposed to be taken seriously

It's the best surprise anime of 2013 (although, is it really a surprise given the reputation of Trigger?) but it was not the best one for 2014
