I'm being genuine when I say that literally every anime site that isn't in fucking japanese is dog shit compared to /a/. We're at the forefront of news, tech developments, all that shit. Every other site basically just digs through our trash. I'd honestly say that /a/ is the number one anime "place" in the west.

The question though is where /a/ gets its information from. I've been here for ~3 years and still have no idea; I get my news from other /a/nons if I get them all. I'm guessing that a large part comes from /jp/ kinds of people who know nippon and browse Japanese websites and 2ch and stuff.

/a/ has been the way it has for a while now. I think my two favorite times were the Geass shitstorm and the PSG through Madoka crap. Walburger night was so much fun with /a/.

I think after Madoka there was a distinct drop in board quality, but it hasn't gotten much worse since.

I'm going to Omegle so I can see that for myself.

The "mainstream" was a joke, but it has certainly become far more socially acceptable than it was back then, even if it isn't as widely popular as a medium. I hear high school kids at the skate park next to my library talking about entry-level shounen like Fairy Tale and it's not uncommon to overhear grown-ass lumberjack-types at work talking about more recent shows for other demographics. In fact, most people don't even look at you funny anymore if you say the word "anime" to them. It may not be mainstream, but we are living in a climate where it easily could become that way.

According to my unscientific yet accurate statistics, /a/ does get most of their news indirectly from ANN

There are things I can't stand about the board culture here, but the alternatives are so crappy I can't help but come back.

Reddit has all /a/'s flaws but none of its virtues, ANN users manage to watch hundreds of anime without learning a thing, and follow Zac's moronic crusades (anime shouldn't be for otaku, fansubs are destroying the industry, Cross Ange is sexist and we should care about that, etc.) Tumblr is what ANN would be if the userbase had the knowledge base of the average high school anime club member.

If you can suffer idiots MAL's not bad - the userbase is dumb, but dumb's better than the shit some boards put out. It's second-best as far as I know and that's a fucking tragedy.

I don't want to learn moon for raws. I want to learn moon for animu boards that aren't shit.

Depends what you want out of discussion and the community. With entry into the mainstream comes increased visibility and many of the often comforting, less commonly palatable aspects of previously insular communities die off in favor of building a better image among the general population. Some people might like that if they want more of their normalfag friends and/or people in general to be into the medium. Personally, I'd prefer if it stayed as a fairly socially-isolated, though still numerically significant, medium, as I like the little quirks and unique features read: filthy degeneracy of our communities, which I find to be in their purest and most distilled form on /a/. Until video games in general entered the mainstream, developers often focused on trying to provide players with new experiences and truly meaningful gameplay, rather than making slight variations on formulae in the interest of appealing to the largest possible audience, because at the time their audience was fairly small and highly critical. You still see this in some of the less-popular genres such as historical simulation/strategy and computer RPGs, but even they suffer from the symptoms. There's a reason we don't see things like Baldur's Gate and Crimson Skies anymore.
As anime is less of a global medium than video games are, I'm not sure how good of a comparison it is, but as there is a lot of overlap with the culture and userbase (at least there used to be) of both, I think some comparison can be made.

The point is that the gender of a person is not a determinant of how likely they are to grasp a subculture.
