Too high concept for a general audience.
Also, if you read the source material like on Baka_Tsuki translations, the author is very libertarian. You could easily be mistaken for the author being American. That is not a popular world view in Japan, although it helps maintain its die-hard fanbase.
Studios just don't want to touch the source material.

Sometimes traveling journey shows present each episode like a diary entry or something out of a log. The filter added in this does a similar thing in a slightly different way, since it makes it seem like you're watching some video recording of a traveler's journeys.

She found a village with very similar people to the village she escaped from as a child, people included. It was going to be crushed by a volcanic eruption, and they were going to send the children out of the village to safety, while the other were going to stay in their home because it was important to them. However, the children felt the same, and they all died in the night after Kino was supposed to have left (as she stayed an extra half day nearby because she cared about the people there). Then, in the middle of the night, she wakes up and has the first expression of true fear and horror she'd shown in the entire show.

It was quite shocking.

>They didn't even want to save the children.

If I recall correctly the inhabitants did but ultimately let the children make the final decision of which they wanted to stay too. I can understand that the sentiment didn't seem so exclamatory and forceful but this was from Kino's perspective and the town already knew about the natural disaster in advance and it's consequences. From their perspective they had come to a decision long before Kino had arrived and Kino was simply experiencing the peaceful resignation that town had come to accept. Didn't they after all say that they wanted every traveller who passed through to experience a good time if only to preserve the memory of their town in a positive way after its destruction as they had realised that they had prior gained a bad reputation?

In any case, though it was an episode that sticks with you for a time afterwards being slightly bittersweet it was also quite endearing in a strange way and the love of a people for their home and to pass away with it shouldn't be treated so negatively or melancholic.

I guess it ties in with those that very Eastern sentiments of 'mono no aware' and 'kintsugi' which I would recommend you read up on and at lleast have a basic grounding or familiarity in eastern philosophy to fully appreciate Kino no Tabi and some of the underlying themes.

check again, Olympic small bore pistol competition is shot with .22cal semi auto handguns. Japan competes in it, so they can get .22 cal handguns but not larger calibers.
Colt built Woodsman Target models were used in international competition when the type was new in the 20s.
Current Olympic pistols barely look like firearms.

Master is trying to get back on the road.
Master was training Kino to replace the young guy that was with her in the flashback episodes when Kino took off.
Kino wanted the skills that Shisho could teach her but did not want to be a hired killer or work for one. Kino only kills when her life or freedom are threatened, not for other people or money. The closest she came to killing for others was the Coliseum arc, but the mad king and his game was a threat to travelers in general so she was not being completely unselfish.
