If we take your argument to the logical extreme, he could say that a certain scenes means something that is completely retarded and contradicts everything else in the writing and it would be true. I think that's silly. As for the specific case of Madoka, it's really easy to argue that Homura is gay for Madoka and there's no doubt that the story supports this. As long as you can reasonably justify your interpretation, I think it's just as valid as whatever the author says or perhaps even more so.

I think the problem arises with shitty writers. They write one thing because it's cool or convenient for the story even if it's not realistic or fitting, and then try to argue that it ain't what it is when it clearly is. In those cases it's far more convenient for the audience to just reject whatever the writer is telling you and just accept your own more sensical and probably in some ways more objective interpretations of the story as canon. It's a weird thing. "death of the author" seems like an argument that people like to use when it's convenient for them, but sometimes the authors background or their comments on their story can make your own experience even better.
