Why don't you watch old anime /a/? There are lots of good series and movies from the 60s, 70s and 80s. You're really missing out.

Because the animation, audio, and voice acting is usually a glaringly low quality that makes it hard to enjoy the story.

But there are exceptions of course.

Same can be said for most modern anime, especially when it comes to animation and art. A lot of digitally animated shows just look cheap. Audio issues in older anime tend to be more a problem of the age of the source.

Oldest thing I ever watched was Nadia and the secret of blue water

I've watched a lot of 70s and 80s shows but they're typically not as good as shows made in a later era. And these reasons stand not for their lack of production values or anything like that.

If I had to pinpoint what years the best anime were produced, I'd say that belongs to the late 90s, and early to mid 00s. Kino no Tabi, Texhnolyze, Aria the Animation, Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Serial Lain and Boogiepop Phantom, just a few to name some of the giants that came around this time.
>>
I'm currently watching Dirty Pair and its like Cowboy Bebop except stupid and with girls bickering. 7/10 bretty gud.

Opinions. I've seen most of the late 90s, mid 2000s series you mentioned, and I wouldn't put them above the best series from the 1970s (Dezaki and Takahata's work specifically).

Finally got round to Ideon at the start of this month and finished it in about three days, fantastic stuff but I was a bit annoyed to find the BD was being subbed just as I had finished watching Shin-Getters subs.

I think my next retro show might be another Tomino(toss up between Daitarn 3 or Zambot 3), Aim for the Ace, SDF Macross(might save this for my Christmas watch), Casshan or Tekkaman.

They are quite similar. Both about an orphan girl, not a great deal happening, not full of unrealistic drama. There's probably slightly more threat in Heidi more regularly as she lives on a mountain. I would say Heidi is very close to being as good as Anne. It just doesn't have so much of that interpersonal drama that Anne does because Heidi spends most of the series living alone with her reclusive grandfather.

well i started watching anime in the mid 90s and at that point a lot of shit from the 80s was still in the process of getting officially translated. so mid to late 80s anime (akira, fist of the north star, kiki's delivery service) is actually where a lot of us started. i still sometimes find 80s/early 90s ovas i havent seen before and find i still enjoy them in 2014

personally i find anything pre-80s pretty glaringly dated (it doesnt help that they are almost never well preserved either) so i tend to not bother

I have been taking this Winter break to start watching some older anime. Admittedly most of what I have seen is post 2000, though obviously not all. Currently I am watching Patlabor (TV), Ranma 1/2, and trying to finish Slayers Try (Not really all that old but still pre 2000). I want to get a 70s anime in there as well. Maybe Lupin or some Dezaki Osamu anime, I am not really sure.

I honestly really like what I have seen so far. I stopped keeping up with this current season due to me just watching and downloading some older series that interested me.

Patlabor may go down as one of my favorite series.

I understand what you are saying, and maybe still in Japan to this day it is "entry level", and certainly back when it was released. But do you honestly think that 90% of /a/ has seen most "entry level" 70s anime? Let alone normalfags who watch Toonami, or the average Gaia/mal/reddit poster.
>>
>>118426135
aside from Heidi: I haven't seen it yet but I've only heard good things about the Peter Pan anime; I've also seen clips and Takashi Nakamura brings some fantastic visuals with him.

>>118426177
I also see what you mean but I just think "entry level" is a silly term; just say 'underrated/under-watched in the west" or something and it'll get the point across.

also" it's kinda willfully ignorant to think MAL, Reddit and Gaiafags don't watch shitty ongoing anime all the time. watching whatever is new and caring more about the "community" aspect than finding stuff to your taste (hence the "bad state of the industry, too much moeshit/shonenshit/haremshit!" whining by people who've seen boatloads of anime, almost all of them from the 2000s and 2010s) is not "elite /a/ behavior", it's literally what all anime watching internet kids do. I like to sample online opinions so I read a lot of dumb communities and trust me, they're very similar to /a/ in their choices of what to watch. for fuck's sake "normalfag" teenage girls watch Seikon no Qwaser.

the real reason /a/ is unique and more engaging than those places because it's not hivemindey and its very specific culture basically encourages people to disagree with each other; even in the rare cases when a consensus is reached, someone will disagree and call everyone a tasteless faggot just for the hell of it. it's the only place where you can easily find people tearing apart certain "sacred, flawless" works and admit to liking certain "cancerous, irredeemable" ones.

Do people really think old anime is ''entry-level''? It's nearly not watched or discussed by anyone nowadays, almost every single person who claim to be an ''otaku'' or use /a/ watch seasonal and post 2008 anime only, sometimes they watch LOGH/EVA/Utena/Lain because people claim them to be the ''best animay ever dude''.

"entry-level" shouldn't be used negatively but as a word for good things that you can show off to people to get them interested in anime.

when deciding how to introduce someone to anime I don't just show them whatever dumb shit weeaboo kids are watching now. I showed Gauche the Cellist to a non-anime-watching friend because he's a hipster music journalist and I thought he'd get a kick out of its atmosphere and lo and behold he liked it.

now imagine if I showed him Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai because "well that's what internet kids are watching now", he'd have just thought "what the fuck is this shit why are you showing me this are you MAD".

imo, entry level as in works able to be enjoyed by most human beings as opposed to livin' la akiba loca ebin otaku pandering.

There's also quite a bit of old shows that are OK-ish adaptations of literature so that's probably more "accessible" to many people whose idea of anime is comes from really bad, but visible and popular shows.

Miyazaki pls.

I understand it's ignorant of me to do so, but we watch anime for different reasons and have different tastes. Which is a reason you shouldn't hold yourself to a higher standard because you can enjoy older series, that's equally as ignorant as you.

If you believe that otakuism killed off the industry then keep living in the past of older series. I watch for escapism, and cute characters make for my kind of entertainment while keeping out a mainstream western audience.

>>118428742
>Overused
Couldn't you say that about any decade? You can easily pick out an 80s series from a 90's series.
It's just this decade's art style.

I think you dislike this modern take because it's a lot more simplified (character look) and done digitally compared to previous decades.
The simplification and digitally drawn adds to the moe.

it works better if you actively attack whatever you want to discuss. "ugh, what a piece of shit ugly dated anime, completely worthless!" = this thread would have been maxed out by now.

traditional is inherently better than digital, and by that I literally mean that no matter how bad your color scheme is, it will look better; real-world colors are more natural by default because, well, they exist.

but when it comes to actual high-quality stuff? there's no noteworthy difference beyond nostalgiafagging. someone who's a brilliant colorist while working traditionally should be just as good at coloring digitally. traditional coloring is almost like a safety net.

not 'old anime' but I've seen people on /a/ and also Ben from Anipages say that the Koike Lupin movie is actually not boringly serious and shitty like I expected it to be after Fujiko, but feels more light-hearted/like a red jacket episode.

I sorta get what you mean. Digital painting imperfectly simulates an analog process. But the increased color/light spectrum of digital is nothing to scoff at. It's like looking at a printed photo vs looking at it on a screen. The printed one may be easier on the eyes but the monitor approaches real life more closely.

yeah, the BDs look gorgeous. You couldn't get the required level of appreciation for the visuals with the shitty rips that existed before, so in my memory Anne feels like sort of a dated show in that sense. I loved 0079, Char's Counteratck, and War in the Pocket, but Zeta, ZZ, 08th MS, and 0083 were mediocre

My point is anime back then is almost just like anime now, there is a lot of shit but definitely stuff worth watching, and even with differences in production quality, hand-drawn and not-digital-coloring was more prevalent

At least it has an incomplete release of the english dub with video that looks like it came from somebody recording their VHS with a phone.

At a glance, it looks shit. It doesn't come across as very Dezaki at all, and it seems that many episodes have different character designers in charge. Not that it's a bad thing, but it doesn't have the TMS house style this way, and the animation looks more western than nihonese.
